**Journey to the West: Dream Supplement**
The ancestor of Chinese time-travel novels, the mother of world dream literature, and the first stream-of-consciousness novel in the world, "Supplement to Journey to the West" is a must-read for fans of "Journey to the West" and Wu Kong. The modern web fiction version, "Journey to the West: Dream Supplement," expands upon the original work.
The original text by Dong Yue (1620–1686), "Supplement to Journey to the West," consists of 43,000 words, while the modern web version has been expanded to 94,000 words, authored by online writer Lan Caixi. Dong Yue's original work is written in vernacular Chinese from the Ming Dynasty, which differs significantly from contemporary language. Additionally, its narrative contains many gaps and simplifications that pose challenges for modern readers. This version addresses those issues, making it accessible and easy to understand, hence its title "Journey to the West: Dream Supplement."
Dong Yue was a novelist from the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. His courtesy name was Ruoyu, and he had several pseudonyms including Xian and Zhegu Sheng. After the fall of the Ming Dynasty, he retreated to Fengcao Cottage, changing his surname to Lin and adopting the name Qian with various other titles. In middle age, he became a monk at Lingyan Temple in Suzhou, taking on the Dharma name Nan Qian and also known as Yue Han or Moon Rock. He hailed from Wucheng (modern-day Wuxing in Zhejiang), a family that had once held prominence but was in decline by his father's time.
"Supplement to Journey to the West" is considered the most successful fan fiction sequel to "Journey to the West," inspiring "Dream of the Red Chamber" seventy years later.
In terms of narrative, "Journey to the West: Dream Supplement" branches off from the main storyline of "Journey to the West," blossoming into a fantastical tale. After passing through Flame Mountain, Tang Seng and his disciples travel past Peony Mountain. Following a rampage by Wu Kong, they inadvertently enter the New Tang Kingdom, where they hear about Qin Shi Huang's Mountain-Driving Bell, which they wish to borrow for their journey westward. They also learn that Tang Seng is to be appointed as Finishing Touch General.
In Green World, they encounter people carving into the sky; this is done by Little Moon King who aims to guide Tang Seng directly to Western Paradise. Wu Kong visits Thousand Mirrors Terrace in Green World and sees a manifestation of souls during an Imperial Examination announcement. He then enters Ancient People's World, transforming into Lady Yu and entangling with Xiong Yu romantically. In a future world where Yan Wang has passed away, he temporarily takes on the role of Lord of Yan, judging Qin Quai with various severe punishments. Wu Kong also meets Yue Fei and takes him as his third master.
