At midnight, the piercing sound of the phone shattered the silence. On the other end, a police officer coldly informed me that my family had been in an accident on the expressway.
I thought it was a scam and scoffed at the idea; he shouldn’t have died like that. Yet, a sense of unease crept into my heart.
Scrolling through videos of the expressway accident, I saw my father's car crushed, resembling a zip file. A wave of guilt washed over me; taking someone else's life was truly a sin.
When I arrived at the scene and looked at the mangled body, I trembled as I removed the diamond ring from my father's hand—one that should have belonged to my mother. Tears fell, but deep inside, a bittersweet sense of relief surged within me.
The insurance company initially estimated the compensation to exceed ten million. I numbly handled the aftermath, and the future seemed within reach.
A few days later, I received a call from the insurance company; there was new progress in the case. The police suspected it was murder, and compensation payments were suspended.
I feigned calmness as I replied, "Okay."
