On the 42nd day at the Postpartum Care Center, I called my superior, Zhou Qi.
Zhou Qi is my boss and my benefactor; it was thanks to her recognition that I was able to enter the human resources industry.
Before I left my job, I had confidently told Zhou Qi that I was about to embrace the two most important roles in my life—mother and wife.
I was filled with anticipation for the happy family life that awaited me.
Now, I have become a full-time housewife.
Zhou Qi was shocked. "A full-time housewife?"
"Jiang Tian, this isn't like you."
"You are much more capable than Wang Ye. When I promoted you to Vice General Manager, I assured the board that you would definitely become a valuable asset to the company..."
"How could you give up such a promising career and willingly stay at home as a full-time housewife?"
"Even if you want to be a full-time housewife, does Wang Ye agree?"
"Hasn't he always relied on you?"
Zhou Qi's relentless questioning made me feel ashamed.
Back then, I was so confident, thinking I could grasp everything, but in the end, I ended up holding nothing.
I fell into a long silence.
Zhou Qi let out a light sigh. "I've been swamped lately, juggling several projects. Are you coming back?"
I responded with a soft "Hmm."
On the other end, Zhou Qi's voice was filled with dissatisfaction. "What does 'Hmm' mean?"
"Jiang Tian, you haven't turned into a full-time housewife to the point where your basic communication skills have deteriorated, have you?"
I paused for a moment. "I changed my number."
"You changed your number?" Zhou Qi's tone shot up several octaves.
"Jiang Tian, you've really grown bold, huh?"
"Daring to change your number?"
"Is that Wang Ye not allowing you to change it?"
"You tell him that I'm Zhou Qi's person, and let's see who dares to touch that!"
I replied, "That's not it..."
"It's because I want a divorce."
A cacophony of noise erupted from the other end of the line.
My hand trembled slightly as I held the phone.
After a long pause, Zhou Qi's voice came through again. "You want a divorce?"
"Why?"
"Is there someone outside, Wang Ye?"
I was momentarily at a loss for words.
What should I say?
Should I tell her that Wang Ye is actually a mama's boy, and after we got married, I was tormented by my mother-in-law while Wang Ye stood by her side, allowing me to be bullied?
Or should I say that Wang Ye didn't provide me with enough security and failed to fulfill the responsibilities of a husband, making me feel that this marriage was dull and unfulfilling, leading me to choose to give up?
It seemed that neither explanation would suffice.
I fabricated a lie: "We just don't get along."
Zhou Qi on the other end of the line fell silent for a long time.
Just when I thought she was going to hang up, she finally said softly, "Alright then."
"I'm not the kind of person who forces others into a corner."
"Since you've made your decision, I respect it."
"However, the door to Jin Yi will always be open for you. Whenever you want to come back, just contact me directly."
A wave of bitterness washed over me: "Okay."
"By the way, isn't Wang Ye also working at Jin Yi?"
"You left, and he took over your position. Now he's the Human Resources Director."
"However, his abilities are not on par with yours. I had him independently handle resource allocation, but the clients were not very satisfied..."
"How about this? I happen to have a tricky resource that needs allocation. Can you help me out?"
"Get it done with Client A within two weeks, how does that sound?"
I paused for a moment.
I hadn't dealt with human resources in a long time, and now asking me to take over felt like an unfair challenge.
But thankfully, my foundation was still there.
I gritted my teeth and replied, "No problem."
On the day I was discharged from the hospital, it was Wang Ping who came to pick me up.
I walked over slowly and said, "Let's go."
Wang Ping raised an eyebrow. "What's wrong? Do you think I can't afford to rent a place for you?"
I was taken aback for a moment.
Wang Ping opened the passenger door. "Get in."
"From now on, you and the two little ones can stay at my place. It’ll be quieter that way."
"I’m not staying there." Wang Ping fastened his seatbelt and started the car.
I frowned, "If you don't live there, then where do you live?"
Wang Ping turned the steering wheel, looking straight ahead. "That house is one I bought."
I gaped, unable to find my voice for a long time.
Goodness, she actually hid from Lin Zhao Di that she bought a house. How many more things don't I know?
Wang Ping glanced at me. "I bought a place behind Mom's back."
"I didn't want Mother to benefit even a little from me."
I turned to look at her, disbelief written all over my face; she wasn't like this before.
Wang Ping smiled helplessly at me.
I thought to myself that if I hadn’t gotten pregnant with Wang Ye's child and hadn’t married him, things would be different.
But looking at the two beautiful babies in my arms, I still felt quite satisfied.
One shouldn't be too greedy; heaven has already given me a chance.
