"I want to stay at the Postpartum Care Center."
"And I want a divorce."
Lin Zhao Di said with frustration, "Tian Tian, have you thought this through? A man as good as Wang Ye, where are you going to find another?"
"After the divorce, you'll have nothing left."
I stared into her eyes. "Mom, you didn't say that when I first got married."
"You said Wang Ye was dull and couldn't win a girl's heart, and that I should be more tolerant of him."
"You also said Wang Ye couldn't live without me and that I should treat him better."
Lin Zhao Di was momentarily speechless.
I turned my gaze to Wang Ye. "Why aren't you saying anything?"
"Do you really want a divorce?"
Wang Ye lowered his head, unable to meet my eyes. "I'll listen to Mother."
I laughed. "Wang Ye, how old are you?"
"Three? Or five?"
"Are you going to listen to your mom for the rest of your life?"
"No wonder they all say you're a mama's boy; it turns out you really are a complete mama's boy."
I scoffed, "Wang Ye, I can't believe I've placed my hopes for a lifetime in someone like you."
Wang Ye stood there, at a loss, rubbing the hem of his clothes, unable to utter a single word.
Lin Zhao Di, seeing that she couldn't persuade me, hardened her attitude. "Jiang Tian, if you want a divorce, that's fine."
"Return the bride price; you can keep the grandson, but the granddaughter is mine."
I looked at her self-righteous face and found it laughable. "Mom, get this straight: I already spent my bride price on renovations."
"I'll agree to leave with nothing but my name."
"Also, I want custody of both children."
Lin Zhao Di screamed, "You're dreaming!"
"My son can have children; there are plenty of women who would bear him kids."
"He could find ten wives better than you!"
I stood up and angrily pointed at her. "Fine, let him go find them!"
"Lin Zhao Di, I've had enough!"
"Why should I let you control me?"
Lin Zhao Di stumbled back a few steps, nearly falling to the ground, but thankfully Wang Ye caught her.
She leaned against her son, gasping for breath, and it took her a while to regain her composure.
She made the decision for Wang Ye. "Alright then, let's get a divorce."
"You're leaving with nothing."
During my confinement period, Wang Ye and his mother had been much more subdued, no longer parading around in front of me.
Wang Ye didn't even come to see his own child.
Only Wang Ping came to check on me every day.
Looking at her, I couldn't help but recall my past life.
In my previous life, before marrying Wang Ye, I was the Human Resources Director at Jinyi Company.
Wang Ye was the Recruitment Supervisor.
Due to our work relationship, we frequently interacted, developed a romantic relationship, got engaged, and then married—it all happened naturally.
Because I was pregnant with twins, I resigned to become a full-time housewife for the sake of the children.
Although my husband Wang Ye's salary wasn't as high as mine, he still belonged to the upper-middle class.
I thought married life would be as peaceful and happy as it had been before marriage, but unexpectedly, from the moment I resigned, Wang Ye took back my salary card and instead gave me a family card and a close payment card.
This meant that I could only access a portion of his salary each month.
I was quite dissatisfied: "Why do you treat me like a child?"
Wang Ye stammered and couldn't find the words to respond.
One evening, while browsing online, I came across a handbag and bought it without hesitation.
Half an hour later, I received a call from Lin Zhao Di: "Tian Tian, what did you buy online?"
I answered honestly.
Lin Zhao Di's tone suddenly became urgent. "Tian Tian, it's not that I want to criticize you, but why are you buying such expensive things online?"
"Have you been scammed?"
"You haven't made any money, and yet you're spending so extravagantly—what's going on?"
"Forget it, just change your phone card. Let Ye Ye help you apply for a new one."
I was completely confused. "Mom, what are you talking about?"
"What do you mean change the phone card?"
Lin Zhao Di hesitated, "Oh, you wouldn't understand. We're all doing this for your own good..."
"You are the precious one in our Wang family. If you get scammed, the loss would be significant."
"Ye Ye has your salary card with me. If you want to buy anything in the future, just let me know."
"We're doing this to prevent you from being scammed."
I clutched my phone, my mind blank.
That night, when Wang Ye came home, I immediately confronted him. "Why do you want to change my phone card?"
Wang Ye deflected the question, "Honey, I'm hungry. Is there anything to eat?"
I was so angry that I trembled all over. "Wang Ye, what do you mean by that?"
"Do you think I'm some kind of fool who will let you two play tricks on me?"
Wang Ye dared not look at me. "Wife, please don't be angry."
"Mom is only doing this for your own good."
"Isn't your money my money too?"
"Why do we have to be so clear about the division?"
I suddenly felt very tired.
Is this really the man I gave up my career for, marrying him without a second thought?
Is this marriage truly worth it?
The thought of divorce crossed my mind.
But then I remembered that I was already pregnant. I couldn't let my child be born without a father, could I?
I fell into a state of self-delusion.
It's okay; everything will be fine once the baby is born...
I immersed myself in the beautiful dream I had woven for myself.
But reality shattered my dreams mercilessly.
