Months passed, and Sister-in-law's belly grew larger, her appetite becoming increasingly astonishing. Mother-in-law prepared three meals a day of meat and soup, yet Sister-in-law still felt unsatisfied.
“Mom, I’m carrying your grandson! You should cook more for me!”
Mother-in-law, concerned about the cost of meat but hesitant to voice her worries, could only complain to Lin Qiang about Sister-in-law's excessive eating.
“When I was pregnant, I only had two meals of sweet potatoes every three days, and I still managed to raise you two boys plump and healthy. She’s eating way too much in a single day!”
“If it weren’t for my grandson, I wouldn’t be putting up with this,” she added.
Lin Qiang also expressed his dissatisfaction. “Mom, you’ve worked hard. Once she gives birth, I’ll have a talk with her.”
That afternoon, I sat under the big tree in the yard with Mother-in-law, shelling edamame. Sister-in-law squatted by the south corner of the yard near a pile of garbage, seemingly focused on something.
A few minutes later, she pulled out a bag of rotten vegetable leaves and started eating them.
“Hey, what is Xiao Shuang eating?”
Mother-in-law and I were stunned by the sight. Sister-in-law was eating from the trash!
I felt a wave of nausea wash over me, nearly making me vomit.
Mother-in-law reported this incident to Lin Qiang in hopes of raising his awareness. However, he dismissed it. “Mom, you’re exaggerating. How could anyone eat garbage?”
“Besides, Xiao Shuang has eaten so much meat at home; how could she possibly eat trash?”
Hearing Lin Qiang’s response, Mother-in-law didn’t dwell on it further.
That day, Sister-in-law's mother came again. This time she didn’t dare to enter our home directly but waited until Sister-in-law emerged from the inner room heading toward the front door before quickly signaling for her to come out.
Sister-in-law glanced around and spotted Mother-in-law busy in the kitchen before quietly stepping outside.
"Mom, what do you need me for?"
Sister-in-law's Mother led Sister-in-law to the edge of the broken wall and whispered, "Your brother is about to get engaged, and we need twenty thousand for the ceremony. What do you think...?"
Sister-in-law frowned, "Mom, I don't have any money left. I've given it all to you."
Sister-in-law's Mother sighed, "Xiao Shuang, after all these years of marriage, you must know where your mother-in-law keeps the family's money, right?"
Sister-in-law was taken aback. "Mom, are you asking me to steal money?"
"It's not like we have any other choice. Your brother needs money to marry his bride; I can't just go rob someone, can I?"
"Xiao Shuang, you have to help me."
Sister-in-law hesitated, "If my mother-in-law finds out, she'll definitely kill me."
Sister-in-law's Mother began to throw a tantrum, "If you don't help me, I'll die right here!"
With no other option, Sister-in-law reluctantly agreed.
I hid in the corner and witnessed everything unfold.
From what I knew, the mother-in-law was very protective of her money and often changed where she hid the keys. Even her own son didn't know where they were kept. I had stumbled upon the hiding place of the keys by accident. With Sister-in-law's intelligence, she would never find them on her own; I had to help her.
After Sister-in-law's Mother left, I deliberately shouted loudly, "There's a mouse! There's a mouse!"
Sister-in-law jumped in surprise, and my voice attracted the attention of the mother-in-law.
"Where? Where is the mouse?"
I pointed at the stove. "I just saw a mouse scurry past here."
"It's fine, Mom. It must have been a mistake."
I pretended to slap my mouth but accidentally kicked open a crack in the stove bricks.
Sister-in-law's eyes lit up.
That night, while the mother-in-law went back to her room to sleep, Sister-in-law quietly entered the kitchen and retrieved the key from the crack in the bricks to open the money cabinet.
I watched this scene unfold silently.
After a moment, I feigned discovering a thief and screamed loudly, "Catch the thief! Catch the thief!"
Then I abruptly turned on the lights, revealing Sister-in-law still holding onto the cash she hadn't had time to put down.
Mother-in-law stared in shock, "Xiao Shuang, what are you doing?"
Sister-in-law stammered, "I... I..."
I answered for her, "Sister-in-law is going to get some money for a prenatal checkup, right?"
Sister-in-law quickly nodded, "Yes, yes, Mom, I've told you many times that I don't have money for the checkup."
Mother-in-law snorted coldly, "What prenatal checkup? Back in the day, nobody needed checkups to have a baby. You're just being dramatic! Besides, if you need to go, you should go yourself! Why steal my money?"
"Give me back my keys. If I find out you've stolen my money, you'll regret it."
Sister-in-law pleaded, "Mom, I'm begging you. Just consider it a loan."
Mother-in-law firmly refused.
Seeing that her pleas were in vain, Sister-in-law threw herself on the floor, crying and rolling around.
Brother came in after getting up to use the bathroom and noticed the lights were still on. He walked in to ask what was going on.
"Mom, what's happening? Why all the noise?"
"Son! You have to take my side! She stole my money, claiming she needs it for a checkup."
Hearing that Wang Shuang had stolen money, Lin Qiang immediately slapped her, "How dare you steal money! The baby is fine; what do you need a checkup for?"
Seeing that Lin Qiang was not on her side at all, Wang Shuang covered her face and ran off crying.
