Shen Chi looked at her coldly, his eyes narrowing slightly. After a long pause, he said in a deep voice, "No."
"You—" Su Mingxian's expression was one of shock.
Seeing Shen Chi's demeanor, Su Mingxian understood what he was thinking.
"Shen Chi, I'm serious. I want a divorce, and it has nothing to do with Huangpu River."
Shen Chi nodded. "I'm serious too. Hurry up and pack; we’re leaving now."
Su Mingxian's face changed immediately at his attitude. "Not this again. Shen Chi, I'm not being unreasonable. I want a divorce, and I won't go with you."
"Why not? If thieves can come once, they can come again," Shen Chi said coldly. "You were lucky last time, but thieves who can steal can also harm. It's not safe here anymore."
"So what? I will have to face all of this sooner or later without you. You can't protect me forever," Su Mingxian replied resolutely.
But Shen Chi stubbornly insisted, "You are my wife, the mother of my children. It is only natural that I protect you for life."
"Shen Chi, please listen carefully. I don't want a husband who doesn't love me, and I don't want to spend my life with someone out of obligation. Do you understand?" Su Mingxian said with unprecedented seriousness. "So let's get a divorce."
Shen Chi was momentarily stunned, looking at her in surprise as if he had never known her before.
Su Mingxian bit her lip; the words were out now, and there was no taking them back. It was for the best, really.
At that moment, Qian Qian peeked her head through the door, her face streaked with tears. She cautiously said, "Daddy, Mommy, can you please stop arguing?"
Both of them turned to look at her, and Qian Qian rushed forward to hug Su Mingxian's leg, crying as she looked up with a choked voice, "Mommy, what is divorce? Why do you want a divorce? Mommy, I don’t want to leave you. I also don’t want to be without Daddy. Isn’t it good for us to be together as a family?"
After saying this, she turned her head timidly but still carefully tugged at Shen Chi's shirt corner. "Daddy, it's me, Qian Qian! Look at my new hairband. Mommy said that as long as you see it, you will definitely recognize me. Daddy, please don’t not want me and Mommy, okay? I’m really good. I promise I’m really, really good."
As soon as she finished speaking, Su Mingxian couldn't hold back her tears any longer and choked out, "Qian Qian—"
Qian Qian tightened her grip on Shen Chi's shirt and instinctively leaned closer to him.
Shen Chi felt a sudden pang in his heart. He crouched down and gently patted Qian Qian's head, saying, "Qian Qian is a good girl. Daddy will never not want you."
"Really?" Qian Qian's eyes lit up at his words. "Daddy, please don’t lie to me! If you lie, your nose will grow long—"
Shen Chi laughed and hooked his pinky finger with hers. "Then let’s make a pinky promise."
Qian Qian was so happy she nearly jumped up. "Pinky promise! A hundred years without changing!"
After making the promise, she happily threw herself into Shen Chi's arms.
Feeling the joy radiating from his daughter warmed Shen Chi's heart. Blushing slightly, Qian Qian whispered, "Daddy, I miss you so much! I look at your pictures every day. Mommy misses you a lot too."
Shen Chi was momentarily stunned. He then looked at Su Mingxian and cleared his throat softly. "Is that true?"
"Of course," Qian Qian immediately betrayed, "I've seen Mom crying while holding your photo several times."
Su Mingxian's expression darkened upon hearing this. "Qian Qian—"
The little girl quickly shrank her neck and hid in Shen Chi's embrace.
