The Great Fire at Anyuan Marquis Manor was suspiciously timed. When Liu Ying arrived, she saw flames soaring into the sky, right where the private treasury was located.
"Clear the way!" A group of soldiers pushed through the crowd of onlookers to make room for the firefighting water carts.
At that moment, she noticed Xu Linfeng hurriedly leaving through a side door, followed closely by several men in black, seemingly carrying something.
"Follow them." A deep voice whispered in her ear. Xu Yuan had appeared by her side, his usual manic demeanor replaced by a serious expression.
The two trailed behind, watching as Xu Linfeng and his companions entered a residence in the southern part of the city.
"Be careful; there’s an ambush." Xu Yuan grabbed Liu Ying, who was about to enter. "They’re deliberately luring us in."
Before he finished speaking, dozens of men in black suddenly surged out from within the courtyard, surrounding the two with weapons drawn.
"You came just as I expected." Xu Linfeng emerged from the shadows, playing with a Bronze Fragment in his hand. "I knew you would follow."
"Hand over the Lens!" A cold voice rang out. Lord Zhou appeared with a squad of soldiers. "You have nowhere to run."
Xu Yuan sneered, "You should be more worried; you won’t be able to keep it."
Before he finished speaking, he suddenly threw several iron nails from his sleeve. The nails struck an oil lamp on a pillar, causing flames to burst forth and smoke to fill the air.
"Go!" Xu Yuan grabbed Liu Ying’s hand and quickly made their escape amidst the chaos. Behind them came Xu Linfeng's furious shout: "After them!"
They dashed into a narrow alley, hurried footsteps echoing behind them. Xu Yuan suddenly stopped. "There’s an ambush ahead."
"This way!" Liu Ying pulled him down another small path. As an official of the Qintian Observatory, she was very familiar with the terrain of this area.
After navigating through several alleys, they reached an abandoned theater. Just as they hid backstage, they heard the sounds of their pursuers outside.
"Liu Ying." In the darkness, Xu Yuan held her hand tightly. "If we can’t—"
"Don’t say anything ominous." Liu Ying interrupted him. "We will definitely find that last piece of Lens and clear your name."
"You silly girl." Xu Yuan said softly, "What I care about has never been my reputation; it’s you…"
Before he could finish his sentence, there was a sudden noise from above. Several shadows broke through the roof and lunged at them.
Xu Yuan shielded Liu Ying behind him and opened his folding fan to fight back. The fan glinted coldly in the moonlight, each strike sharp and fierce.
Liu Ying did not back down either; she took out a hairpin to assist him. The two worked together seamlessly and managed to push their attackers back for a moment.
"So you do have some skill." Xu Linfeng's voice came from above on the beams. "But unfortunately, you will both die here today!"
"Not necessarily!" Xu Yuan suddenly waved his hand, scattering a cloud of powder into the air. In the moonlight, Liu Ying saw that the powder shimmered with an eerie glow.
Xu Linfeng's expression changed dramatically. "Be careful, it's Dream's End Powder!"
Taking advantage of the enemy's moment of distraction, Xu Yuan suddenly pushed Liu Ying aside. "Remember, tomorrow at Noon, at The Purple Forbidden Enclosure!"
"No!" Liu Ying tried to turn back, but he skillfully sealed her acupoint.
"Trust me." Xu Yuan's eyes were filled with tenderness. "You still owe me a bowl of water; how could you not come to our meeting?"
Before his words had faded, he charged into the encirclement, drawing everyone's attention. Liu Ying watched helplessly as he gradually fell into the trap, unable to move.
At that moment, she noticed that the Bronze Mirror Piece in Xu Linfeng's hand was emitting a strange light, corresponding to a specific celestial phenomenon in the sky!
