Su Han understood Chu Feng's meaning. "I am willing to run an errand for you, my lord. I will definitely rescue the hostage safely. These bullies are truly lawless."
"It is time to put them in their place," Chu Feng said, a glint of killing intent flashing in his eyes. "Ma Batian cannot be touched for now. While my inability to act is one reason, if we can find evidence of Zhang Biao's crimes, my Royal Confidential Office will have the authority to eliminate someone. Hmph."
With that "hmph," Chu Feng's murderous intent was fully revealed.
"Is it really necessary to have evidence of wrongdoing?" Su Han suddenly asked.
"What do you mean?" Chu Feng's gaze fell on him.
"Five years ago, on the fifteenth of August," Su Han said slowly, "there was a civil uprising in Linjiang City. On that day, Ma Batian's henchman Liu San, under the governor's indulgence, brutally suppressed the people. I heard that Liu San ordered dozens of explosive bombs to be thrown into the square where the citizens had gathered, resulting in heavy casualties among the people. The citizens of Linjiang City have always regarded Liu San and his ilk as enemies. So, if we want to kill Ma Batian's henchmen, how could the citizens not want revenge?"
Chu Feng looked at Su Han with a hint of curiosity, something he had never felt before. "You know about this?"
"My aunt was from Linjiang City when she was young, so I have heard a bit about it," Su Han replied.
He wasn't lying; in his previous life, his aunt was indeed from Linjiang City and was a historian. She had even participated in discussions about the hero monument on the outskirts of Linjiang City. The uprising of the citizens back then was led by that very hero.
"I see," Chu Feng finally understood. "Then you should go to the Accounting Department to get some travel expenses and head to the General Affairs Department for weapons. I will specially approve a carriage for you. Once you arrive in Linjiang City, go first to Nanmen Wharf; there’s a small tavern without a signboard. When you enter, tell the shopkeeper you want a portion of Linjiang Roast Chicken with two Linjiang Specialty Meatballs added and extra ginger. Our people will come to assist you upon hearing the signal. That dark guard is named Wang Wu; he has been running a tavern in Linjiang City for three years now. Bring him back with you once your mission is complete."
"Understood, my lord," Su Han pondered over the somewhat unusual name "Wang Wu."
The fact that Chu Feng entrusted such a personal task to him indicated trust and also served as a test for him. He already had a rough plan in mind for how to proceed and would refine it along the way.
Should he bring Lin Yu?
Su Han thought it best not to take him along, but if he did so, Chu Feng would surely grow suspicious.
Upon arriving at the Accounting Department and General Affairs Department, Su Han found things went smoothly due to Chu Feng's orders and because both department heads had recently received favors from him.
Not only that, but Zhao Yu, the head of the Accounting Department, generously allocated more than double the usual amount for travel expenses.
As Zhao Yu prepared the funds, he seemed particularly concerned. "Captain Su, is this your first mission?"
"Yes, Director Zhao," Su Han replied respectfully.
Zhao Yu's words carried an implication: "It's not easy out there; there are many places where you'll need to spend money. Don't hesitate to spend what you need. If you run out of funds, just cover it yourself first and I'll personally sign off on your reimbursement when you return."
"Thank you, Director Zhao."
Su Han certainly understood what the other party meant. The extra money from the reimbursement, of course, was to be split between the two of them.
