Juxian Tower is a historic restaurant in Tiandu, established during the previous dynasty. Its signature dishes, such as Emerald Shrimp, Jade Hairpin Silver Sprouts, Ruyi Roll, and Peony Fish, are renowned far and wide. Many dignitaries think of Juxian Tower first when hosting a banquet.
Zhou Meng had reserved a private room. When Su Han arrived, his five subordinates were already waiting there.
“Captain Su, please, take a seat,” Zhou Meng said, ushering Su Han to the main seat. He and Lin Yu sat on eith Second Division de of him, while Zhang Yan, Zhao Gang, and Su Yao took their places across the table.
“Waiter, bring out the dishes! Be quick about it!” Zhou Meng was a native of Tiandu and was very familiar with the place.
Zhou Meng poured himself some wine he had brought along and first filled Su Han’s cup, then poured for the others in turn. “This is authentic wine from Xinghua Village. My brother-in-law brought me two jars last year, and I’ve been reluctant to drink it. The wine from Xinghua Village was once a royal tribute and is famously known for the saying ‘If you ask where the tavern is, the shepherd boy points to Xinghua Village.’”
Once everyone’s cups were filled, Zhou Meng returned to his seat. “Come on, brothers, and our Miss Su as well. Today marks Captain Su’s appointment. Let’s toast to his bright future and rising success! Also, let’s celebrate the establishment of our Six Squad under Captain Su’s leadership; may our future be limitless!”
“Cheers!” Everyone raised their cups and drank heartily, including Su Yao.
Su Han had a good tolerance for alcohol. After finishing his cup and seeing Zhou Meng about to pour more wine, he took the wine jar from him. “Let me pour this time.”
“Oh no, that won’t do,” Zhou Meng protested.
“If I say it’s fine, it’s fine,” Su Han insisted as he took a cup and approached Su Yao.
His subordinates exchanged knowing glances. Could it be that Captain Su had taken a liking to this girl? Unfortunately, within Royal Confidential Office, there were strict regulations set by Office lord Chu Feng that forbade romantic relationships between male and female operatives. Any violations would lead to severe consequences—dismissal at best or execution at worst. Just last year, a female operative who somehow became pregnant was secretly executed under Office lord's orders.
However, Su Han had no such intentions. “Xiao Su, did you receive the money?”
"I got it, I got it." Su Yao quickly stood up. "Thank you, Captain Su. I was just worrying about how to pay this month's rent."
She was a woman from Jiangnan, recruited into the Royal Confidential Office. Naturally fastidious, she couldn't get used to living in a dormitory with many people, so she rented a place outside.
"I haven't been here long, but I've heard that the higher-ups eat meat while sometimes you can't even get soup," Su Han poured wine for Su Yao and walked over to Zhao Gang. "Sit down, sit down, no need to stand. When we're working, I'm your captain, but outside of that, we're all brothers and sisters... I'll be frank with you: if you follow me, we need to complete our missions and also find ways to make money. We can't just serve the court and neglect our own livelihoods."
Everyone laughed.
This captain had quite a way with words.
"Lao Zhang, fill it up." Su Han poured wine for Zhang Yan. "But let me make it clear: we're all part of the Six Squad; we're in the same boat... Ah, Xiao Su, you're in your own boat..."
Su Yao let out a laugh.
Su Han then walked in front of Lin Yu: "What does it mean to be in the same boat? We share the spoils and earn money together. On ordinary days, don't hide anything; if you have any thoughts, just tell me... Lao Zhou, it's your turn."
