In the map given to Lu Fei Fan by Yun Kui, various red and green areas were marked. The red regions indicated areas of toxic Miasma or Beast Nests, but it was unclear how long ago these markings had been made.
As Lu Fei Fan followed the safe route, he still encountered the territory of the Azure Poison Crocodile. Fortunately, he had enough Energy Grenades on his back, which allowed him to escape as the pursuing Azure Poison Crocodiles rushed to feast on the carcasses of their fallen kin.
Though human presence was rare in these dangerous areas, the situation was further complicated by the vines of the rainforest that twisted down from the tree trunks, concealing unknown dangers lurking everywhere.
A team of three men and two women mercenaries walked ahead. They were well-equipped, all armed with high-quality weapons from the Free Federation.
“Liu Tao, are you sure this is the right route?” asked a girl following closely behind a tall man leading the way.
The man held a standard Energy Submachine Gun and was equipped with an Energy Suppression Howitzer. His sharp gaze scanned the surroundings, vigilant against any sudden threats from the forest.
“Shi Jing, this is the eighth time you’ve asked,” replied one of the men, who had a cigarette dangling from his mouth. He had two standard Energy Pistols holstered at his waist and another two strapped to his thigh. A large military knife hung from his backpack.
“Fei, it’s quite dangerous for us to recklessly barge into a place like this looking for Fire Spirit Grass,” Shi Jing said anxiously. She wore black leather pants and held a sniper rifle, with a delicate pistol at her waist. Her tall boots occasionally sank into muddy puddles, which frustrated her beautiful face.
The man named Liu Tao seemed not to hear his teammate's complaints; instead, he focused intently on leading the way, occasionally crouching down to sniff at the soil and leaves.
“Jing Jie, I’m tired,” said a girl behind Fei who wore a Tactical Vest but carried a long knife. She drooped her head, appearing listless.
“A Xiang, just hang in there; we only took a break half an hour ago,” Shi Jing replied, her complaints aside as she kept her mind on their mission. “Liu Tao, why is Luo Group offering one hundred million for this Fire Spirit Grass?”
Unable to contain her curiosity, Shi Jing asked.
“To eat it, what else could it be for?” answered a stout teammate with a round face from behind her.
He carried a bulging backpack and bore a Fire Howl Gun, likely serving as the heavy firepower support for their team.
“Pang San, can you think for a moment? Besides eating and sleeping, does your brain ever engage?” Shi Jing scolded with a sharp tongue.
“Shi Jing, Pang San is just like that. Why are you being so harsh?” Fei couldn't stand it any longer and defended Pang San.
“That's exactly the point. If we're not careful in this place, we could easily fall into a crisis,” Shi Jing continued to nag.
Suddenly, the impatient Liu Tao, who was leading the group, turned around and retorted, “Enough. Everyone cut back on the chatter.”
Shi Jing wanted to argue further, but just then, a flurry of birds took off from the trees, and Liu Tao abruptly turned around as if sensing something ominous.
Then, whoosh!
A patch of grass suddenly erupted as an Energy Rocket shot towards them like a bolt of lightning!
“Get down!”
Boom—
Before he could finish his warning, a massive explosion sent him flying to the ground, pain surging through his body.
His eardrums buzzed, making it impossible for him to settle down; his head felt as if it had been hammered. Struggling to get up, he readied his weapon, but three or four grinning Mercenaries jumped down from the trees and kicked his gun away!
Liu Tao pulled out a dagger, but his opponent was quicker and knocked him out with a swift kick.
When he came to, Shi Jing was desperately calling for him.
“Li Tao, wake up!”
He slowly opened his eyes and looked around. Was he being hung upside down? His head throbbed painfully, and the world appeared inverted. His hands and feet were bound, suspended from a tree.
A scruffy-faced Mercenary wandered in front of him. He glanced at Li Tao, spat on the ground, and clutched his gun.
Though Li Tao was upside down, he could see Shi Jing and A Xiang tied to a large tree. A Fei was also hanging nearby. Pang San, being overweight, was wrapped around a tree, bound by the Mercenaries who had attacked them. One of the Mercenaries stood beside him, kicking him whenever he moved.
Li Tao observed his captors—rough-looking soldiers, three or four guards among them. Three Mercenaries were huddled together discussing him, each sporting a scruffy beard and lacking personal hygiene, reeking of various unpleasant odors.
“Let me go! You bastards, I’ll kill you!” Shi Jing shouted as she struggled against her bindings.
“Oh, still got some fight in you,” one man said, casually shouldering his Energy Submachine Gun. He reached out with his filthy hand to touch her cheek. “Tsk tsk, such smooth skin—it’s making me hungry.”
“What do you want?!” Shi Jing cried out in panic.
“Hmph, what do you think? Didn’t you say you’d kill us?” The Mercenary leaned closer, extending his tongue as if to lick her face.
Shi Jing desperately turned her head away, but the man grew angry and forced her head back toward him, licking a large swath of her cheek.
“Bastard!” Shi Jing screamed in frustration. “I’m going to kill you!”
“Hahaha! Kill me? You might want to think about your own situation first. Many in our team haven’t had meat in a long time,” he replied with a laugh, prompting the other Mercenaries watching to join in their mocking laughter.
Shi Jing looked at the leering Mercenaries surrounding her and felt a wave of fear wash over her.
“Shi Jing, if anything happens, remember to kill me,” A Xiang said, trembling with fear beside her.
Shi Jing suddenly fell silent, looking at Liu Tao, who was hanging upside down and seemed to be contemplating a way to escape.
“Take him out along with the other two men, and bring those two women!” The mercenaries seemed to have reached a decision.
Two of the mercenaries immediately drew their weapons, intending to deal with Liu Tao. He and A Fei struggled against their restraints, but the opposing mercenaries raised their guns, aiming at Liu Tao's head. It was easy to say they weren’t afraid of death, but in reality, he couldn’t think of any good way to escape. Bound and hanging upside down, he regretted bringing people into this dangerous place. Liu Tao resigned himself and closed his eyes.
Suddenly—
The sound of gunfire didn’t ring out; instead, there was a whistling noise as something flew through the air, followed by dull thuds.
Liu Tao seemed to hear the sound of bodies hitting the ground. He opened his eyes and saw two mercenaries lying in front of him—those who had intended to eliminate him. One had a stone embedded in his forehead, blood oozing out; the other was similarly injured.
“Who did this?” The remaining mercenaries immediately opened fire in panic.
Swish! Swish!
This time, two throwing knives struck true, hitting the mercenaries squarely in the face. They fell lifelessly to the ground, eyes wide open in shock; they had no idea who had ambushed them.
Swish!
A dagger sliced through the air, and Liu Tao and A Fei fell to the ground!
The ropes binding them were cut by a mysterious figure. Instantly, he and A Fei scrambled up and dove behind a tree for cover as gunfire continued to erupt chaotically around them.
Hiding behind the tree, Liu Tao pulled a one-inch dagger from his boot and cut the ropes. He then stood up and threw the dagger to A Fei, who was behind the tree trunk, using his mouth to untie the ropes. A Fei hurriedly cut through the bindings.
The two exchanged a glance behind the tree trunk, silently preparing to rush out and save someone.
But outside, a series of screams abruptly ceased.
Liu Tao and A Fei looked at each other in fear and quickly rolled on the ground to grab weapons. Just as Liu Tao raised his weapon, his heart nearly leaped out of his chest!
A sleek, black Thunder Leopard pounced on him, pinning him to the ground. Its amber eyes stared directly at him; any slight movement would result in its sharp claws tearing through his chest.
Lying on the ground, he dared not make a sound. Meanwhile, A Fei had not found a weapon. Looking at the one-inch dagger in his hand, he thought about running to grab a submachine gun but was suddenly stopped by someone stepping on him!
He looked up to see a face that appeared to be around his age.
"I advise you not to make any sudden moves," Lu Fei Fan said to the young man.
"Hei Niu, let him go," Lu Fei Fan ordered, gesturing for the Thunder Leopard to release the young man it had pinned down.
The black leopard seemed to understand and turned away, returning to Lu Fei Fan's side, behaving like a well-trained cat.
Lu Fei Fan patted its head. The Thunder Leopard had been chased by a Two-Headed Lion earlier, and after he helped it out, it had followed him all the way here, even taking care of these nuisances.
Initially reluctant to get involved, he saw that several mercenaries intended to kill witnesses. He knew that two girls would surely fall victim if he did not act. After some thought, he decided to intervene.
A Fei walked over and cut the ropes binding Shi Jing and A Xiang before going to rescue Pang San as well.
“May I ask this hero…” 6 Tao wanted to inquire about the other’s name, hoping to repay this favor in the future.
“You can call me Passerby A. You should leave quickly; there are many like me in this forest.” Lu Fei Fan picked up a Zhan Dao and swiftly leaped onto the back of the Thunderous Black Panther, casting a commanding glance at the group of young people who were unaware of the dangers around them. He shook his head and departed.
6 Tao and the others watched their savior, who hadn’t even left a name, leave with complex expressions. Finally, they gritted their teeth and made a decision.
“Let’s go.”
The group silently gathered their equipment and quickly turned to leave this place of trouble.
With the speed of the Thunder Leopard, Lu Fei Fan raced through the forest like lightning. In less than half an hour, a strange fragrance wafted through the air, mingling with the complex scents of mysterious beasts in the woods.
Not far ahead, a uniquely thick giant tree appeared before him. Notably, there were no other trees surrounding it, as if this tree was the king of its domain.
Lu Fei Fan knew that this must be the Totem Tree he was searching for. Looking up along its trunk, he indeed saw a few crystal-clear seeds encased like amber honey, which must be the source of that peculiar fragrance.
However, just as Lu Fei Fan was about to approach, he suddenly crouched down again. A Colossal Creature slowly raised its head beneath the giant tree, vigilantly watching its surroundings!
Lu Fei Fan's heart sank; it was indeed not going to be that simple!
