Hao struggled to break free, but the boot pressing him down felt as heavy as a mountain.
Yura was lost in thought, a Serpent Blade held against her throat, rendering her motionless.
The owner of that boot was clad in fiery red tactical armor, wielding a massive two-handed sword—Lian Qingzong!
Beside him, holding the Serpent Blade, was none other than Jiang Lao.
Behind them, Bai Qi's men had completely surrounded the village. The remaining villagers who had not yet fled were held at gunpoint by these mercenaries, and those who dared to resist were swiftly taken down, facing little real opposition.
The only resistance came from Hao and Yura. However, that was before the village's defenses were breached; it had been the Python Vine guards that protected the outer village. But after Bai Qi ordered an assault with High-Explosive Shells, those plants were utterly destroyed.
Hao and Yura found themselves in a fierce battle against the sudden invaders. Facing Bai Qi's elite forces proved to be a daunting challenge for them. Even with the Tree Puppet under their control, creating monsters to fend off their attackers was not enough to hold back these foes.
Moreover, once Lian Qingzong joined the fray, the situation quickly turned dire.
As a result, Yura lost an arm—a brutal warning from Jiang Lao to keep the villagers in line.
Bai Qi gazed at the ancient tree emitting a faint green glow, its branches swirling with Green Spirits that were tantalizingly alluring. He exchanged a glance with You beside him.
You signaled to several mercenaries who immediately grabbed large boxes and moved toward the ancient tree.
"What are you planning to do?" The village chief could clearly sense their intentions. You, with his cold demeanor, ignored him and directed his subordinates to pull out assembled equipment from the boxes. They resembled ground-based rocket launchers and included several specially designed metal cages with excellent sealing properties!
Soon, several mercenaries skillfully set up the equipment and aimed at the green spirits residing in the ancient tree.
"Fire!" You commanded.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
A flurry of white webs, resembling silken cocoons, shot forth with a whoosh. Remarkably, these strange white nets pierced through branches and leaves, directly ensnaring a cluster of green sprites, which fell to the ground in tangled heaps.
The sprites that landed on the ground struggled desperately to break free, but none succeeded. The nets appeared transparent, yet intermittently revealed white energy lines, clearly indicating they were specially designed energy capture nets.
Jiang Lao and Lian Qingzong observed everything with indifference. They exchanged glances, both sensing that Bai Qi had come prepared, though neither expressed much concern.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Another group of sprites was captured and fell to the ground, writhing and emitting low, mournful cries that no one could clearly hear.
At that moment, the ancient tree that had remained silent suddenly began to thrash about, letting out a terrifying howl. The sprites perched upon its branches joined in a bizarre collective scream, along with those that had been captured.
The Bodhi Tree Demon, which had been near Azure Pond, also howled in response. By the pond's edge, seven or eight mercenaries surrounded it with weapons drawn, wary of its escape.
The chieftain appeared calm; he had anticipated such an outcome long ago.
"You are here for the Totem Sacred Tree and the Bodhi Spirit Tree!" the chieftain said coolly.
Bai Qi looked at the chieftain and stepped forward, removing the tubes that had been stealthily observing him. White mist erupted from the tubes as he dramatically took off his helmet visor, revealing a face that left onlookers stunned.
His entire head appeared as if it had rotted away—no scalp, no eyebrows—looking as though it had melted. Only his facial features remained somewhat intact, hinting at what he had endured.
Many mercenaries were taken aback by their leader's grotesque visage beneath the helmet but quickly feigned ignorance.
Lian Qingzong showed little interest while Jiang Lao watched their exchange with a dark expression, seemingly intrigued.
Bai Qi approached the chieftain with his helmet in hand and smiled. In his true voice, he said, "Actually, I should thank you. Village Chief."
The clan leader was taken aback by the voice, his expression shifting to one of profound shock.
After a mix of complex emotions swirled within him, he managed to form a slightly astonished question: “It’s you!”
Bai nodded and replied, “That’s right, it’s me.”
The clan leader seemed to find it amusing, chuckling bitterly, “I never expected this, never expected this at all.”
“There’s nothing so surprising about it. If you hadn’t saved me back then, I might have died in the woods,” Bai said, his breathing becoming labored. He then donned his helmet again and spoke in a low tone, “Honestly, I didn’t want it to come to this.”
“You didn’t want it to come to this? Hmph!” The clan leader struck the floor with his cane, showing signs of anger. “We saved your life from the deadly swamp, and yet you repay our kindness with enmity!”
“I appreciate the help you gave me back then, but when I pleaded for some Source of Life, you refused,” Bai replied. “That’s why I had no choice but to resort to such measures.”
“Source of Life… So you still haven’t given up,” the clan leader remarked.
“Our Bai Tribe is cursed. Every generation of young men suffers from a disease that causes their bodies to rot away. My generation is no exception. I’ve researched extensively and sought help from many people; I even made sacrifices at the lighthouse, but nothing could cure my affliction. Only the Source of Life you gave me last time kept my condition at bay for two years. When I sent someone to ask you for more Source of Life, why didn’t you give it to me?” Bai Qi stated bluntly, revealing the purpose of his visit.
“Source of Life is fundamental to the Bodhi Spirit Tree. It is quite limited in their bodies. Moreover, it is still immature; we had no choice but to refuse your request,” the clan leader answered sincerely.
“Alright.” Bai Qi walked around the clan leader. “The village chief has his considerations. I must also think for myself.”
“Since you want Source of Life, do you really need to go through such trouble?” the clan leader countered, then hopefully suggested, “I can have someone fetch some for you right away if you promise to take your people and leave.”
Bai shook his head and declined, “It’s too late for that, village chief.”
“Too late?” The village chief appeared agitated. “Are you trying to exterminate us? Hmph! Repaying kindness with enmity!”
“Don’t worry; we won’t harm you. We only want what we desire,” Bai Qi promised.
"You..." The clan leader was not one to give up easily without achieving his goals. It was clear that these people had no intention of negotiating with him. He fell silent, seemingly resigned to his fate.
"Fine, since that's the case, I won't say much more." With that, the clan leader turned and walked into the house. Someone attempted to shoot him, but Bai Qi reached out to stop them; after all, this village chief had once saved his life.
The hunched figure of the village chief seemed to age significantly as he entered the treehouse, closing the door behind him.

The ancient tree suddenly uprooted a complex network of roots from the ground and slammed down violently, instantly crushing several mercenaries who were capturing energy spirits!
Yuzu happened to be dragging two captured spirits back to their cage at that moment, narrowly avoiding disaster!
The previously short ancient tree uprooted another set of roots, bang! Bang! Bang! The entire tree lifted off the ground, revealing its massive root system as it began to sweep across the area.
"Open fire!"
Some mercenaries could no longer contain their fear and started shooting!
“Old fool!” Bai Qi clearly realized that the village chief was behind this, but the ancient tree had already come to life.
The treehouse was perched atop the ancient tree, which towered below with roots sprawling like living creatures. It swept a branch of Tree Vine, sending the mercenaries who had opened fire flying.
The mercenaries by the shore, originally focused on the Bodhi Tree Demon, quickly turned their guns toward the suddenly animated ancient tree. A barrage of firepower rained down on it from all directions, creating numerous holes in its bark and breaking branches and vines. Yet it roared defiantly, swinging countless Tree Vines wildly.
Many mercenaries caught in poor positions were instantly crushed beneath its branches!
At that moment, the Bodhi Tree Demon also lunged from the Azure Pond toward the mercenaries on the shore. Several of its vines ensnared those mercenaries, dragging them down into the water.
Realizing what was happening, the mercenaries quickly turned their weapons on it!
It roared!
Its pod-like head suddenly opened wide, spraying green liquid that splashed into the Azure Pond.
In an instant, the Azure Pond began to churn violently as if some monster were awakening and trying to crawl out!
Boom!
In a flash, the Azure Pond surged forth, enveloped in a thick mist. Countless green Tree Vines, growing wildly as if alive, surged toward the shore and lunged at the mercenaries who were firing at them!
Many mercenaries saw the monstrous swarm of Tree Vines and instinctively began to retreat. However, screams echoed continuously as they were either ensnared and strangled or dragged into the water to be submerged by the Tree Vines.
Yao dealt with the ancient tree, drawing her dagger and leaping along the ancient Tree Vines to reach the treehouse and confront the village chief. But time and again, the ancient tree's Tree Vines swatted at her, knocking her back down.
Bai Qi retreated; this situation was something he had never anticipated. What had once been firmly under his control had suddenly spiraled into chaos. He had no choice but to shift his gaze toward Lian Qingzong and Jiang Lao, who were standing apart from all this.
He had paid a hefty price to hire these two, hoping they would be able to handle situations like this one.
Lian Qingzong stood firm, his foot pressing down on Hao. Hao exchanged a glance with Yura, both realizing that these people had underestimated the true wrath of the Bodhi Tree Demon and the Totem Tree.
"Leave this place now, and you might still have a chance to survive!" Hao shouted.
Lian Qingzong turned around and shot him a glare.
With a sudden burst of force, Hao's body sank into the ground with a thud, his eyes widening in shock as he coughed up a mouthful of blood.
"Hao!"
Yura sprang into action, her Tree Vine transforming into two sharp blades that lunged fiercely at Jiang Lao. Jiang Lao swung his Serpent Blade, clashing against her attack with a metallic clang.
Seeing Hao lying unconscious on the ground stirred something within Yura, causing Tree Vines to sprout and writhe from her back.
"Hmph, interesting," Jiang Lao remarked as he observed the Tree Sentinel. "Let me see what you can do!"
With that, he unleashed a flurry of layered light from his Serpent Blade, launching an assault towards Yura.
