As Lu Fei Fan suddenly burst into laughter, Qin Qin and Jiu Ye exchanged puzzled glances.
Jiu Ye quickly rushed in front of Lu Fei Fan, reaching out with his calloused hand to check his forehead. Finding no fever, he proceeded to inspect Lu Fei Fan's body thoroughly, repeating the process three times before finally sitting down with a sigh of relief.
“Damn it, are you scared out of your wits?” Jiu Ye asked, bewildered by Lu Fei Fan's unexpected outburst of laughter.
Fu Qinqin, uninterested in the sudden antics of her companion, settled down as well and closed her eyes to rest. After a long night, she was indeed exhausted.
Lu Fei Fan patted his bulging backpack and teased, “You’ll find out soon enough.”
The vehicle jolted and swayed as it made its way back to the base. On the horizon, a warm golden light began to break through the cold, menacing darkness of the night.
Fearing any further surprises on their journey, the group decided against stopping along the way and continued driving toward the sunlit base.
In the open-top vehicle, the weary travelers curled up together, dozing in the sunlight.
It was hard to tell how long they had been driving, but after traversing the vast expanse of the Gobi, they finally spotted the base. However, thick smoke billowed from it, prompting everyone to perk up.
Seeing the base shrouded in smoke and unfamiliar beasts lurking about, they noted how artillery shell craters dotted the area, leaving it scarred and battered.
The two vehicles cautiously navigated around these craters and unknown creatures until they reached the entrance of the base.
Yet at the entrance, a Machine Gun was already trained on them from a distance, and a loudspeaker blared commands.
“Vehicle ahead, report your identification number!”
The cavalry raised a white flag, signaling that their convoy meant no harm.
When the convoy arrived at the base entrance, the cavalry jumped out of their vehicles to communicate with the heavily armed guards who appeared ready for battle. Most of these guards were unfamiliar to Lu Fei Fan. He searched for a long time and found that only a few of the guards he had known before leaving were still around, and they had little authority now.
"Which Special Operations Team are you from?" asked a burly man with a thick beard.
The cavalry reported their Special Operations Team name, and the burly man sent someone inside to verify it. After a considerable wait, a verified team member rushed out to report back to the bearded man, who then opened the gate to let them in.
Once inside the base, Jiu Ye and Jia Jia went to help Cai Bi carry the injured to the Battlefield Hospital for emergency treatment. Meanwhile, Ma Dui, Da Fu, and Fu Qinqin organized their vehicles while Lu Fei Fan strapped on his gear and slung his bulging pack over his back.
He looked around but surprisingly did not see Ren Dongchuan or anyone from Berg's team. Instead, he noticed a man dressed in a white uniform standing in the corridor of the office building that Berg had claimed as its own. The man had a full beard and appeared to be middle-aged, scrutinizing them intently.
Behind this middle-aged man stood an imposing giant, at least two meters tall, clad in what looked like high-quality Tactical Vest armor. He had two handguns holstered at his waist.
Lu Fei Fan glanced at their shoulder insignias but found no military ranks displayed.
Ma Dui also noticed the man but said nothing. He turned to lead Da Fu and Fu Qinqin to the barracks for some rest. He was unsure about what had transpired at this base, but it was still functioning well.
As long as he could recuperate here, it was better not to inquire about things that didn’t concern him.
Everyone in the Fei Hu Battle Team seemed to sense the strange and oppressive atmosphere of the base. Other Special Operations Teams were equally quiet; gone was the lively noise that used to fill the place under Ren Dongchuan's management, replaced instead by a heavy sense of gloom.
Several times Jiu Ye tried to speak up but was silenced by Da Fu Ge’s warning glance.
After the injured were taken to the Base Hospital, everyone went to take a shower and then gathered in the rest area of the camp.
The atmosphere in the camp was slightly better than that in the cafeteria. A large group of cavalry was organized to take turns bathing. During a moment of downtime, they asked Lu Fei Fan about his experience entering the Tomb and how he ended up being chased by a group of people.
Lu Fei Fan slowly recounted that after emerging from the Tomb, he had crossed a stretch of hilly terrain and unexpectedly encountered a group of mercenaries who were resting at a campsite. This group of mercenaries was the same one that had previously ambushed Indigenous Crazy Horse.
Initially, Lu Fei Fan intended to bypass them, but he overheard two sentry mercenaries discussing how their captain had obtained numerous treasures.
Among these treasures were several items worth a fortune, enough to sustain the Special Operations Team for a hundred years. This sparked Lu Fei Fan's desire to seize the treasures.
He observed the camp from a distance for quite some time before finally identifying the location of their captain's tent. He buried hand grenades at various points around it, setting them to detonate at staggered intervals. Naturally, this caused chaos in the camp when they exploded.
In the midst of the confusion, Lu Fei Fan slipped into the captain's quarters. When the mercenary captain returned to camp, he found that all his belongings had been swept away by Lu Fei Fan.
In a fit of rage, the captain took ten or so subordinates and drove off in pursuit of this thief.
What followed was a near-miss as they almost caught up with him. After escaping, Lu Fei Fan deliberately tossed his bulging sack to the cavalry team. They looked at him with confusion as Jiu Ye eagerly snatched it up, wanting to take a look first. On the road, they had seen Lu Fei Fan clutching that package as if it were a beloved woman, and his lewd laughter sent shivers down Jiu Ye’s spine amid the temperature fluctuations of day and night.
When Jiu Ye opened the sack, the gleam inside nearly blinded him.
He gasped in shock, standing there dumbfounded.
"My..." he muttered, completely at a loss for words.
Da Fu Ge was also curious as he took the bag, slightly surprised. He then handed the heavy package over to the horse team for inspection.
At first, the horse team was skeptical. Could it really be that exaggerated?
As he leaned in to look at the open bag that Da Fu Ge had revealed, his eyes widened and his mouth dropped in disbelief at Lu Fei Fan. "You..."
Lu Fei Fan was lounging on the bed, legs crossed, happily gnawing on a duck leg, seemingly unfazed by the life-risking treasures he had brought back.
"Half of it was taken from the Tomb, and half was snatched," Lu Fei Fan said casually.
"Hahaha, we struck gold!" Jiu Ye suddenly snapped back to reality, wanting to rush over and hug Lu Fei Fan tightly, showering him with kisses. He had thought they would return empty-handed, but this surprise was beyond his expectations!
The horse team stroked their bearded chins and couldn't help but smile. "Looks like we owe you one."
Da Fu Ge shook the clanking bag and reached inside to pull out an item for inspection. It was a crown adorned with jade and gold, looking like something only a person of high status in ancient times would wear.
"This thing could probably fetch several million..."
"Hahaha, we did it!" Jiu Ye exclaimed excitedly, rubbing his hands together as he pulled out several colorful ancient necklaces from the bag and draped them around his neck, resembling a wealthy lord.
"Tsk tsk, these things could take me half a lifetime to afford," Jia Jia remarked with delight as he admired the jewelry hanging from Jiu Ye's neck.
At that moment, Fu Qinqin and Cai Bi returned. Upon seeing the room filled with glittering treasures, they were instantly stunned. Especially Cai Bi; when he saw Jiu Ye adorned with strings of green beads like a grand lord, he immediately lunged forward in excitement.
“Where did this come from?”
As soon as the words left his mouth, he reached into Lu Fei Fan's bag and pulled out a Night Pearl the size of an egg.
“Damn, is this thing real?” He exclaimed, biting down on it with all his might, nearly breaking his teeth.
“...Haha, this is mine now! Hahahahaha…” He immediately fell into a frenzied state, desperately rummaging through the bag for the treasure.
Fu Qinqin glanced at the bag and then looked over at the figure lounging on the bed with legs crossed, appearing indifferent. Her expression was complex.
The horse team leader stroked his chin as he observed the group, a smile playing on his lips. This Fellow had brought him too many surprises—first sending Da Biao back, then Gorge saving them. Both the combat experience and Fu Mai Xi Shu exceeded his expectations.
He exchanged a glance with Da Fu Ge. When Jiang Wannian had recommended this newcomer to them, they had discussed their concerns about whether the newcomer would adapt to the Special Operations Team, or if he might cause losses or trouble for them. They had hesitated for a long time before finally agreeing to Jiang Wannian’s suggestion, not expecting to stumble upon such a great opportunity.
“Let’s put the stuff away for now!” Da Fu Ge commanded. This matter needed to be kept confidential; if word got out that they possessed something valuable, it would lead to serious trouble.
In the wilderness, the worst fear was having others know you had something worth a lot. It wouldn’t just be trouble; it would definitely attract a pack of wolves ready to attack.
Suma returned, but everyone was quick to tidy up. She noticed that the atmosphere in the camp was strange; Jiu Ye and Cai Bi were singing an extremely off-key song while linking arms as if celebrating something.
Da Fu Ge hummed a tune while disassembling firearms and maintaining equipment, while Jia Jia sharpened a dagger on a whetstone.
“Ren Dongchuan has been reassigned,” Suma said gravely as she stepped back into the camp.
The horse team furrowed their brows. This base had been the hard work of Ren Dongchuan for over a decade. Even if the higher-ups wanted to transfer him, it likely wouldn’t happen so quickly. Given his style of operation and the protection he had from above, it wouldn’t be easy to move him.
“Where was he transferred to?”
“To Giant Tree Island Base,” Suma replied confidently.
“Where did you hear that?” The horse team was curious about her source of information.
“The Iron Rat Squad,” Suma said. “They just hurriedly left this base.”
“Hurriedly?” Da Fu Ge, who had been focused on repairs, looked up, catching the key word in her statement. “Why?”
“This base has been taken over by that Lancer. He brought several hundred people with him. I heard that when he arrived, Ren Dongchuan’s second-in-command was also transferred, along with that General powerhouse.”
The horse team thought for a moment; this situation was actually quite normal. They didn’t belong to any faction of the Free Federation; they were merely mercenaries. Ren Dongchuan was considered an officer within the Expeditionary Force, so his transfer made sense.
“What about Berg and the others?” Lu Fei Fan suddenly interjected with a question.
