As Lu Fei Fan's vehicle smoothly entered the mountainous terrain, the thin mist had become the most visible feature of the environment.
"Strange, this island has never had such thick fog before," Suma remarked, looking around at the enveloping haze, which made it nearly impossible to see anything beyond a hundred meters.
"Where there's smoke, there's fire!" Lu Fei Fan replied, keeping his eyes fixed ahead as he expertly maneuvered the steering wheel.
"Look over there!" Suma suddenly pointed. In the mist, a thick black tornado was gradually descending from the dark clouds above.
"It looks like something's coming!" Lu Fei Fan glanced at the Fog Tornado, sensing that something was amiss.
Boom—
Sure enough, as the Fog Tornado dissipated, a colossal creature suddenly charged out of the mist!
"Get down!" Suma shouted as she swiftly drew her handgun.
Bang bang bang—
The bullets struck the creature's head, sparking off a series of flashes, but they did nothing to halt its descent!
Lu Fei Fan slammed down on the accelerator as the colossal creature barreled forward. It was only then that Suma got a clear look at it. With two heads resembling those of a rhinoceros and a massive, rugged body, it was a Charging Beast!
"This thing is coming right at us!" Suma exclaimed, stowing her handgun back in its holster. Clearly, light weaponry posed no threat to it.
Amidst the jostling of the vehicle, she climbed into the back seat and grabbed the Huo Xiao Machine Gun!
The machine gun roared as streams of fire tore through the ground, sending up an impressive spray of dirt towards the Charging Beast!
The beast was immediately pelted by bullets raining down upon it, splattering blood everywhere. It bellowed in fury but continued to charge toward Lu Fei Fan's vehicle. However, Lu Fei Fan skillfully drifted and spun the car, causing the Charging Beast to stumble and providing Suma with ample opportunity to shoot.
As the Charging Beast charged out, Lu Fei Fan realized its bulkiness; it certainly couldn't match his off-road vehicle in terms of braking or maneuverability.
After running out of bullets, Suma hurriedly pried open the ammunition box and pressed the bullet chain into the chamber. When she looked up, she found that the Charging Beast had already vanished without a trace.
"We're almost there." Lu Fei Fan spotted the circular Shangu looming like a towering pine tree in the thick fog. Surely, that was where their captain and the others were trapped.
Upon reaching their destination, Lu Fei Fan pressed down on the accelerator, no longer conserving fuel as he had before. The vehicle surged forward like a wild stallion, racing through the misty Gobi Desert toward the fiery Shangu.
When they were about a kilometer away from the fiery Shangu, Lu Fei Fan could sense large amounts of Pulse Energy moving through the fog.
"Prepare for battle!" he instructed Suma as he kept his eyes on the road ahead.
Without hesitation, Suma moved to the back and readied the Huo Xiao Machine Gun. A piercing shriek echoed through the fog, and suddenly a swarm of dark Flying Beasts burst forth from the clouds!
They had bird-like wings, sharp fangs, and claws as sharp as hooks. Forming an orderly combat formation, they dove toward the off-road vehicle that had suddenly entered their battlefield!
"Bring it on!" Suma shook her messy hair, her delicate face filled with determination and fearlessness. She aimed the Huo Xiao Machine Gun and pulled the trigger with force.
A torrential downpour of bullets rained down upon the creatures diving toward the ground, piercing through them one by one. The beasts exploded in a shower of blood and flesh.
From within the misty air above, a monstrous creature emerged, brandishing several long tentacles as it hovered menacingly over the two unwelcome humans.
Suddenly, a thunderous sound of flapping wings filled the fog.
"This is bad!" Lu Fei Fan accelerated toward the gorge once more.
Sure enough, countless Flying Monsters surged out of the misty sky. Suma turned her gun to fire at those behind them, but there were simply too many; the Fire Howl Gun's firepower was overwhelmed by their sheer numbers.
A swarm of flying creatures fell like autumn leaves, plummeting to the ground as bullets struck them. However, the monstrous beasts rolling in from behind surged forward like a tidal wave!
“I can’t hold on much longer!” Suma shouted, desperately firing his weapon, but as his ammunition ran dry, the flying monsters lunged at him with alarming speed.
Suddenly, several Energy Grenades soared into the air, exploding with a series of loud bangs—
Flames engulfed the flying beasts in an instant.
Suma, having reloaded, paused for a moment and glanced at Lu Fei Fan, who was driving with his back turned. Did this fellow just casually toss a Hand Grenade behind him? How did he manage that…
Shaking off his confusion, Suma unleashed another barrage from his Fire Howl Gun, its roar echoing like the voice of death as it mowed down the pursuing Flying Beasts.
The vehicle thundered into the Gorge, where ferocious beasts began to leap from both sides of the cliffs. Lu Fei Fan wielded a Military Knife and a handgun, steering to avoid collisions while using the Silver Sparrow War Blade to dispatch any monsters that jumped onto their path.
In the narrow confines of the Gorge, despite the overwhelming number of monsters charging down, Lu Fei Fan’s co-pilot had prepared a box of Hand Grenades. One after another, Lu Fei Fan hurled them out of the window, creating a cacophony of explosions that echoed around them, sending shockwaves that swallowed the frenzied beasts attacking them.
The two managed to carve out a bloody path through nearly a thousand meters of the Gorge. Remarkably, no monster had managed to harm them; they kept their off-road vehicle under firm control, thanks in part to its impressively thick armor plating.
Lu Fei Fan felt deep gratitude for the rugged vehicle that Berg had gifted him; even its front protective devices had proven lethal against many monsters during their reckless charge.
Against all odds, they broke through the encirclement of beasts at the end of the Gorge—a feat that would go down in history as one of humanity’s incredible miracles.
However, as Lu Fei Fan approached within hundreds of meters of the base, he realized that the situation inside was dire.
The sheer number of attacking beasts had forced Da Fu Ge, the cavalry unit, Jia Jia, Cai Bi, and Fu Qinqin to retreat into the warehouse—this was their last line of defense.
“Captain! Dadai has led his team to retreat!” Jia Jia burst in with a Submachine Gun in hand to report urgently. “They left behind injured personnel who couldn’t be evacuated!”
The cavalry team wore serious expressions, with several members crouched over the trench, continuously firing outward.
"This bastard! I should have shot him dead the moment I had the chance!" Fu Qinqin cursed.
"When will the rescue from the base arrive?" Cai Bi asked the cavalry team. Behind him were the wounded in the warehouse; some lay on the ground, already filled with despair, while others had fled, leaving them behind. It was only a matter of time before they met the same fate.
"Maybe there won't be any rescue," Da Fu Ge said after a moment of thought.
"Those bastards!" Cai Bi spat and cursed again.
"Cursing won't help. We should think of a way to break out!" Da Fu Ge replied.
Suddenly, two other members of the Special Operations Team rushed back in from outside, and the cavalry team recognized them.
"Weren't you supposed to break out with Daqi?" Ma Dui asked them in confusion. Did they really want to return and wait for death with just a few of them? He firmly believed these soldiers weren't that noble; it seemed highly unlikely.
"Ugh, we almost died out there!" one of the mercenaries said, gripping his gun and spitting on the ground, looking visibly shaken.
"What happened?" Da Fu Ge adjusted his glasses and asked.
"Daqi led us out with a dozen men, but as soon as we pushed through the door, we ran into a horde of beasts. All our brothers fell into an ambush; it was like they were waiting for us to charge out!" another mercenary said, fear evident in his voice.
"What about Daqi?" Ma Dui inquired.
"He's dead. I watched as a monster with a porcupine head tore him apart into several pieces..."
"Yeah, luckily we ran fast; otherwise, we would have died there too."
The two Mercenaries were still in shock.
"It seems we are going to die here today," Cai Bi said pessimistically, gazing outside.
For a moment, everyone exchanged glances, and no one spoke.
"Damn it! Why hasn’t the Federal Government sent troops to rescue us?" one of the injured said, clearly unwilling to accept their fate.
"This isn't even within the Free Federation; this is the Fallen Zone. Battles like ours happen almost every day on some island in this vast sea. The Expeditionary Force might want to help, but they are already stretched thin trying to hold the reclaimed defensive lines. Rescue us? Don’t be ridiculous. We’re not important generals or political figures; we’re just a bunch of Mercenaries trying to make a living for our families. Our lives are worth little; do you really think the Free Federation would go through all that trouble to send troops for us?" an Old Mercenary, wrapped in bandages, lay on the ground and said with a hint of self-mockery.
Immediately, someone began to cry in despair.
"Woohoo, I don’t want to die! I want to go back and see my mom; I promised her I would come back alive!" This was a young man in his early twenties.
"Stop crying! Don’t act like a coward; it’s just death! If you’re a man, stand tall and fight those beasts outside!" The Veteran picked up a gun and expertly loaded it. The others watched him load his weapon with practiced ease and then silently followed suit.
The members of the cavalry squad also remained quiet; Fu Qinqin and her team had long formed an understanding.
"Keep an eye on the situation. If there’s a chance to break out, remember to take it!" the cavalry leader instructed a few of them.
After some commotion, silence fell over the trench in front of the warehouse. After a while, someone still unwilling to accept their fate spoke up.
"Old man, wouldn’t it be great if a god of war came to save us right now..." the young man said as he wiped his tears.
The old man patted the young man's shoulder; he understood the fear that gripped him. Claiming not to fear death was easy, but facing hordes of monstrous beasts was another matter entirely.
"They're coming!" someone shouted.
"Attack!"
Hand grenades were continuously thrown, and everyone began firing their weapons at the bizarre creatures of the Beast Horde that surged forward.
Suddenly, a path opened in the Beast Horde, and two lizard-like monsters sprinted towards them on two legs, moving with surprising agility!
"Not good! It's an Evolver!" Da Fu Ge shouted.
The cavalry and Jia Jia quickly drew their Zhan Dao. Bullets were ineffective against the two mutated Evolvers; they dodged left and right, leaping into the air like cannonballs. With a deafening roar, they swung their tails, resembling Death Scythes, as they landed in the trench. Their tails struck two armed soldiers who failed to crouch in time, causing a shocking spray of blood from their chests as they collapsed.
"Heart!" The cavalry brandished his Zhan Dao and charged into close combat!
Jia Jia also drew her dual Zhan Dao, roaring as she rushed forward!
The two Evolvers responded with their own roars, and chaos erupted as they clashed with the two humans!
Life and death hung in the balance in an instant.
