At this moment, far away on the other side, Lu Fei Fan was also fighting for his life.
Three off-road vehicles suddenly charged at him, their mounted machine guns unleashing a relentless barrage, striking the vehicle like two deadly whips in the darkness.
Lu Fei Fan drove the car as if it were a ship swaying in a storm.
"We need to fight back!" Suma shouted, flipping over to the back. She pulled aside the tarp covering the mounted machine gun and raised the weapon, which was already loaded with ammunition.
"Come on! Let me show you what I can do!"
The machine gun roared to life—bullets sprayed out like furious serpents, slamming into one of the pursuing vehicles and erupting into a shower of sparks.
The remaining two vehicles were caught off guard by the unexpected firepower from Lu Fei Fan's car.
Suma wasted no time; she continued to unleash a hail of bullets from the machine gun, forcing the two chasing vehicles to split up in their pursuit.
Thus, under the cover of night on the desolate plains, a chase ensued. Gunfire exchanged frequently, sending nearby wild animals scurrying away in fear of being caught in the crossfire.
Lu Fei Fan couldn't help but admire Berg for providing him with such a robust military-grade off-road vehicle. It withstood several rounds of fire without much more than a few sparks flying off. In contrast, one of the remaining vehicles was struck by Suma's fire, igniting its engine and forcing its occupants to stop and extinguish the flames.
Only one vehicle remained on his tail. Taking advantage of the moment when they were exchanging fire, Lu Fei Fan finally got a good look at his attackers.
They were dressed like locals, clearly the same group that had ambushed him before. He hadn’t expected them to be so bold as to set up an ambush after the Beast Attack incident.
Perhaps it was merely coincidence that he had stumbled into their line of fire; however, that didn’t matter now. What mattered was that these locals clearly intended to eliminate him.
Lu Fei Fan's driving skills were steady and precise. Although the opposing driver was also quite skilled, Lu Fei Fan's erratic maneuvers were like a Sand Scorpion dodging with its tail, making it impossible for the enemy's attacks to land a significant blow. In fact, their ammunition ran out without posing any real threat to Lu Fei Fan and Suma. As Suma became accustomed to Lu Fei Fan's drifting and swerving, she effectively suppressed the enemy with her Machine Gun.
She shot out their tires directly, forcing the opponents to abandon their pursuit amidst their furious curses.
After the brief skirmish, Suma returned to the passenger seat and looked at Lu Fei Fan. Strangely, he had never turned on his headlights during the entire ordeal, which seemed rather reckless.
If it were her, even driving normally would be challenging enough; yet this fellow managed to drift wildly in battle without lights. Did he have some sort of superhuman vision? Despite the bumps along the way, they hadn't flipped over. She realized that she couldn't have handled it as well as he did. The more she thought about it, the more unnerved she felt, prompting her to reevaluate this fellow.
Lu Fei Fan noticed Suma staring at him.
"What’s up? Did I get shot?" He glanced at himself while driving, confirming that there were no bullet holes in his body. Why was this woman looking at him like he was crazy?
Confused, he looked back at her, wondering if he had somehow become more handsome. He touched his chin thoughtfully; could it be that his impressive driving skills had won her over?
After a while, Suma finally offered her assessment: "You're not human!"
Lu Fei Fan stared blankly at Suma, bewildered by her comment.
On the road, they fell into silence. After the adrenaline of battle wore off, Suma began to doze off in the passenger seat as they bounced along. Lu Fei Fan checked the radar; they still had several dozen kilometers to go before reaching their designated rescue point. He estimated they would arrive in two or three hours.
As dawn quietly descended into the night sky, it felt like a knight honoring his faith and glory, arriving faithfully as promised.
"I'll drive," Suma suggested after resting for a while.
Lu Fei Fan pulled over to take a break himself. He intentionally walked a bit farther away to take care of personal matters, leaving Suma nearby since she was a woman.
Standing on a rock and relieving himself freely, Lu Fei Fan gazed into the distance and noticed that the horizon appeared like a swirling vortex, with dark clouds gathering in concentric circles around it.
Lu Fei Fan surveyed the mountainous terrain surrounding the swirling dark clouds, noting its striking resemblance to the location where he had just conducted a rescue.
After swiftly resolving the "battle," he hurried back to the vehicle, where Suma was changing a tire that had worn out.
"What happened?" Suma asked.
"Look over there!" Lu Fei Fan pointed toward the corner where the clouds twisted like a vortex, thunder rumbling ominously as if something was brewing.
"Is it that strange?" Suma replied in surprise, then glanced at Lu Fei Fan, seemingly recalling the bizarre phenomena he had conjured back at the base. In comparison, this anomaly felt trivial.
"It’s definitely coming from their side," Lu Fei Fan said as he checked the map. Rolling it up, he gazed at the swirling cloud formations and the flashes of lightning that evoked a deep sense of unease. "We need to pick up the pace."
The two of them quickly replaced the damaged tire. Suma even loaded the off-road vehicle's artillery with fresh ammunition, ready to respond to any unexpected situations on the road.
At that very moment, within the base where the Fei Hu Battle Team was taking refuge, combat had escalated to an extraordinary intensity.
Three Fire Howl Machine Guns atop the wall unleashed a torrent of bullets like an angry reaper wielding a Death Scythe. The projectiles fell upon the Shangu passage in a relentless downpour, while unknown creatures crawled in swarms along both sides of the mountain path. Some had limbs resembling those of spiders, others bore massive and thick exoskeletons like beetles, and countless multi-headed serpents slithered through, all overwhelmed by the hail of human firepower.
In addition to the three Fire Howl Guns on the wall, fortifications along the city wall spat flames without pause, their firepower effectively preventing any of the attacking beasts from breaching their defenses.
After tentative assaults, these creatures began to abandon most of their fallen comrades' bodies and retreated like a receding tide.
Standing atop the wall and stroking his chin, Da Fu Ge observed the beasts below. Above them, dark clouds churned ominously as if a storm were about to break.
"Why are they retreating so easily this time?" Da Fu Ge remarked, sensing something amiss.
"I’m wondering what they’re really after. Is there something in this base that they want?" Da Fu Ge mused as he watched the creatures vanish into the mist.
"I've checked thoroughly; apart from a few tons of military arms and ammunition in the warehouse, there's nothing unusual about this base," Da Fu Ge remarked, having inspected the area and found nothing amiss.
"We shouldn't have come to this place," the cavalry leader shook his head, regretting their decision to respond to the rescue signal here. They had intended to save other members of the Special Operations Team but had instead led their own team into a dangerous trap.
"Look! What is that?" someone suddenly shouted, noticing something rising through the mist.
"Not good!" The cavalry leader immediately grabbed a high-powered rifle and fired rapidly, shooting down the object.
But more objects began to rise, seemingly launched toward the base!
Whoosh—whoosh—
They crashed down with a thunderous roar, smashing into the base with a loud bang!
The impact shattered rocks and buildings, creating craters on the ground. What landed was a black carapace-wrapped cocoon!
The cavalry leader watched as smoke billowed from the cocoon. Two brave soldiers grabbed their weapons, eager to investigate what it was. However, as they approached, two sharp limbs pierced through their bodies and quickly retracted. The black cocoon transformed into a standing beetle with an ugly head resembling that of a mantis. Its claw-like arms sliced through the soldiers, tearing them apart effortlessly.
Without thinking, the cavalry leader raised his weapon and unleashed a barrage at the beetle that had just regained its combat form. The creature was reduced to pulp, but those previously launched combat beetles had already transformed into battle mode within the base!
"Damn it!" the cavalry leader cursed. "Qin Qin, come with me to clear out these bugs! Everyone else, watch the perimeter!"
With that, he jumped down from the wall, his machine gun roaring as he blasted half of a beetle's body that had just swung its sharp limb to attack one of his soldiers.
The creature staggered as it managed to stab one soldier with its sharp limb. Gunfire erupted throughout the base. Fu Qinqin gracefully descended with her dual pistols drawn, heading straight for the ward area where Cai Bi was located!
There were four or five beetles attacking there, but gunfire continued to erupt from inside the ward, indicating that Cai Bi was also fighting off these creatures.
Fu Qinqin moved swiftly on the outskirts, taking down one enemy after another. Once the entrance was cleared, Cai Bi poked his head out from inside and gave Fu Qinqin a thumbs-up.
Fu Qinqin glanced at him but had no time to respond. She quickly rushed toward the other bases, where the beetles were forcing the soldiers inside to retreat in fear. Some, in their panic, fired wildly without hitting the beetles, only to be struck themselves. They screamed as the creatures decapitated them, and then the beetles took flight, clutching the severed heads in their claws.
However, as they flew over the city walls, Da Fu Ge shot them down one by one with his rifle!
The soldiers quickly followed suit, knocking them out of the sky, but the heads they carried rolled down to the ground.
“They're coming up!” shouted a soldier on the wall again.
Outside the walls, in the fields, a mass of strange beasts approached once more. This time, however, there were also some massive Fellow creatures lumbering slowly at the front.
“Something feels off!” Da Fu Ge observed those enormous beasts that resembled fortress tanks. They looked somewhat like rhinoceroses but were bulky and moved slowly. Many of the smaller beasts could not contain themselves and rushed past them to the front.
The firepower from the battlements opened up simultaneously, blasting those beasts that got too close to the walls into pieces. But when bullets struck those heavy fortress-like creatures, they barely made a dent!
Da Fu Ge suddenly realized the gravity of the situation. He pushed aside a soldier operating a Fire Howl Gun and shouted urgently, “Concentrate fire! We need to take down those fortress beasts first!”
