The vast fog loomed like a giant beast, expanding recklessly into every corner of the Shangu highlands under the night sky, flowing like water.
All objects vanished into the smoky haze, with only the occasional startled birds and beasts taking flight, quickly disappearing back into the mist.
Yet within this circular Shangu, a thick scent of gunpowder and blood lingered. At the entrance, a wide opening stretched a hundred meters, with the fog reducing visibility to within fifty meters.
Along the damp and rocky path lay numerous strange beast corpses—some with limbs, others crawling without legs, and some ferocious creatures sporting multiple pairs of fleshly wings. They were piled together, sprawled across the road leading deeper into the entrance, surrounded by black craters left by explosions, with scattered body parts and debris from shrapnel creating a chaotic scene.
Behind a rock, a slender figure crouched beside a Goat Beast corpse, skillfully wielding a dagger clad in combat gloves to slice off chunks of meat.
This person was wrapped in a Rain Cloak, their head covered as they cautiously surveyed their surroundings. Suddenly, an unusual sound emerged from the obscured depths of the fog. Without hesitation, they tossed the cut pieces into a Tactical Backpack behind them and stealthily slipped away along the rock face.
Indeed, not long after, a two-headed Monster Snake slithered out from the mist. It sniffed at the scent left by the human on the Ground, its two heads raised as it flicked its tongues. The creature twisted its massive body and began to glide along the rocks, uncertain whether it was waiting for prey or following the scent trail.
However, sensing danger ahead, the human deftly navigated through the chaotic terrain like a Ling Cat, advancing forward. After traveling about a hundred meters through the fog, they came upon a wall flanked by steep mountains. It stood over ten meters tall, with trenches constructed from sandbags and rocks atop it. Three main Fire Howl Guns were mounted above, while several irregularly placed Machine Gun emplacements dotted the base of the wall.
The crouching figure let out a sharp whistle towards the wall's summit, causing the heavy steel gate to rattle open with a clank!
Suddenly, a rock tumbled down from the mountainside. The person waiting for the gate to open sprang back as if electrified; from the left side of the mountain ridge, a large shadow lunged down!
But it missed its target and crashed into a pile of rocks!
Boom!
The figure rolled away on the Ground before swiftly drawing two long-barreled pistols from their side!
Bang! Bang! Bang—
Bright flashes erupted like lines as bullets rained down upon that shadow!
On top of the wall, a ‘Huo Xiao’ Machine Gun quickly adjusted its aim towards its own people below, firing in rapid succession—tat-tat-tat—
The Machine Gun whirred to life, unleashing a torrent of furious flames.
Bullets rained down like a fierce storm upon the area, striking the ground and sending countless sparks flying as fragments of rock scattered everywhere.
The impact of the bullets also dispersed some of the mist in the area, revealing that the ambush on their comrades was being carried out by a massive Two-Headed Giant Snake. The bullets ruthlessly pounded against its tough hide; despite its resilience, it could not withstand the wrath of the Fire Howl Gun. Countless bullets tore through its flesh, and instinctively, it coiled its massive body in an attempt to protect itself.
However, the Fire Howl Gun easily transformed its long, bulky form into a mass of holes. The creature writhed in agony, thrashing about as rocks were sent flying around it.
The firepower of the Fire Howl Gun continued for several minutes, and the brief downpour of bullets was enough to exact a heavy toll on the Two-Headed Giant Snake.
The person below holstered their pistol and pulled open a small iron gate, rolling inside. The gate slammed shut with a heavy thud, sealing off the dangers of the outside world.
Inside the gate, there was another trench at the entrance where several people lay in wait. A Fire Howl Gun was aimed at the entrance; as long as anyone who entered was not human, the soldiers behind the trench would undoubtedly pull the trigger and turn any intruding creature into fragments.
However, the newcomer slowly unveiled their headscarf, revealing a spirited face that eased the tension among the soldiers.
“Don’t fire! It’s Qin Qin returning!”
Seeing a familiar face, those behind the trench immediately signaled for everyone to lower their guard, dispelling any misunderstandings.
Fu Qinqin nodded at several acquaintances behind the trench. One of them was the shorter Jia Jia, who stopped and pulled a piece of chocolate from her pocket, tossing it to him.
Jia Jia stared blankly for a moment, unable to find words as he looked at her.
“Go ahead and eat it; I’m not hungry,” Qin Qin said before moving on.
Jia Jia watched her retreating figure, always feeling like an older brother to her. He shook his head helplessly and tucked the chocolate into his camouflage uniform's chest pocket like a treasured possession.
But this movement tugged at his abdominal wound. He lifted his shirt to reveal bandages stained with dark red blood seeping through. He took steady breaths, careful not to make any noise as he tried to ease his pain.
Fu Qinqin walked along the narrow passage of the city wall. This was a temporary base, with only a wall standing before the mountain. Behind it lay an excavated warehouse and a cluster of buildings, not large in size, with only five or six rooms and a passage leading to the back. Unfortunately, that passage had been sealed off, leaving only the misty path ahead as a means of escape, which was impassable for vehicles.
She encountered several acquaintances along the way, greeting each one before stepping into a dimly lit room. She tossed her backpack to someone responsible for cooking and wearily sank onto a nearby bench.
The horse team was discussing the current situation at a table with Zhong Nian, whose face was partially bandaged in gauze.
Zhong Nian glanced at Fu Qinqin and, seeing that she was unharmed, felt relieved.
"Da Hai, how many of us still have full combat capability?" the horse team leader asked.
"There are still eighteen with full combat capability. Including the injured from other teams who haven't been taken off the line, we should have around twenty-five left," Zhong Nian replied.
"If it weren't for the ammunition stored in the warehouse behind this base, our four teams would likely be finished here," Da Hai said, slamming his fist on the table in frustration.
At that moment, Da Fu Ge returned, covered in dirt and dust. He coughed as he entered the room and found a cup of water to drink before finally settling down.
"How's it going? What about the communication radar?" Da Hai asked.
Da Fu Ge shook his head thoughtfully. "It's not that our communication radar is malfunctioning; I feel like something is interfering with our signals."
"We've clearly been sold out!" Da Hai slammed his fist on the table again, visibly enraged.
"But I'm sure our distress signals have gone out successfully," Da Fu Ge speculated.
"Then why hasn't anyone come to rescue us? It's almost three o'clock; the supplies stored in this base are running low. Even if we can hold out, those things outside won't let us live long enough to escape..." Da Hai clearly couldn't understand.
"If you want to leave, no one is stopping you," Fu Qinqin suddenly interjected from the side.
"You!" Da Hai glared at the cold-faced girl with slight anger.
The horse team looked at Fu Qinqin without any intention of blaming her. Instead, they patted Dà Hǎi on the shoulder to offer comfort. “Dà Hǎi, we understand how you feel.”
“Understand? Have you experienced losing half of your team in battle? How can I not be agitated! Even if I survive and go back, how am I supposed to explain this to their families?” Dà Hǎi slammed his hand on the table and stood up.
“Then don’t go back alive,” Fu Qinqin said, looking at the old man with annoyance.
“You! Young lady, what do you mean by that?”
“Lack of skill, who can you blame?” Fu Qinqin glared at him in disgust.
“Qin Qin!” the horse team leader interjected, trying to stop the argument.
Fu Qinqin glanced at the captain, who was struggling to contain his anger, then sprang up from the sand and left the room.
The sound of Dà Hǎi's desperate roar echoed in the room as Fu Qinqin stepped outside, muttering her dissatisfaction.
“What’s there to complain about for a useless person!”
She kicked a stone away and walked into another room. Leaning against the doorframe, she observed the cramped space where Cai Bi was busy tending to four or five injured soldiers. Two female team members were assisting Cai Bi in caring for the moaning patients.
Cai Bi glanced at the somewhat displeased Fu Qinqin and continued to change the bandages for one of the wounded. “Back already?”
“Mm.” Fu Qinqin crossed her arms and leaned against the door, not in the mood for conversation.
“Who upset you?” Cai Bi shot her another look. He had dealt with her temper countless times and clearly understood it well.
Fu Qinqin remained silent, watching as Cai Bi focused intently on his task.
Da Biao began speaking to himself. “Have you heard the ancient saying that when a person is about to die, their words are kind? I’ve never believed that dying people speak kindly. Often, when people are on their deathbeds, they utter extremely vicious words. Do you know why? It’s because they realize they won’t survive and can only use their last bit of strength to curse others. Regardless of whether it’s effective or not, at least it gives them a sense of satisfaction from an unprovoked release of emotions. Everything created by the Creator is good, but once it reaches human hands, it turns into evil.”
"I don't know what you're talking about." Fu Qinqin clearly couldn't be bothered to think about the depth of Cai Bi's words.
Seeing that Qin Qin's mood had improved a bit, Cai Bi smiled and changed the subject. "Alright then, let's talk about something else. Any news on Lu Fei Fan and Da Biao?"
"None," Fu Qinqin replied coldly.
"Ah." Cai Bi wrapped up the bandage and sighed. "Those two fellows aren't thinking of abandoning us to return to the Free Federation, are they?"
"I don't know." Fu Qinqin had no idea and didn't care to find out.
"Ah, it's hard to help others when life is tough," Cai Bi said. "If I can survive and get back, I want to eat well and sleep for three whole nights!"
Just then, the sound of the Fire Howl Gun from the city wall interrupted the brief calm of the base.
The battle had reignited.
Cai Bi looked up, only to find that Fu Qinqin, who had been leaning against the door, had already vanished. He sighed softly, "Things never go as planned..."
