Lu Fei Fan sat across from Berg, unceremoniously grabbing a handful of candies from the table and popping them into his mouth.
Berg watched this overly familiar fellow and, to be honest, he didn’t particularly like him.
“Your captain and the others are trapped at Hill 18?” Berg asked.
“Yes, I hope Colonel Six can dispatch a rescue Special Operations Team,” Lu Fei Fan requested without any hint of subtlety.
Berg nodded and replied, “I’ll be leaving here in a few days.”
Now it was Lu Fei Fan’s turn to be surprised.
“The affairs of the base are entirely under the command of Base Commander Ren Dongchuan,” Berg said candidly, looking directly at Lu Fei Fan.
“This…” Lu Fei Fan hadn’t expected this turn of events. This was getting interesting; he had seen enough of the back-and-forth games between people to know that finding answers would be futile.
“Well, now I know the answer,” Lu Fei Fan said as he saluted and then turned to leave.
Berg didn’t call him back. He lay back in his comfortable chair and turned to look out the floor-to-ceiling windows, closing his eyes to enjoy the tranquility.
After a while, he opened his eyes again and pressed the summon bell. A soldier appeared at the door, and he gave a few instructions. The guard promptly left to carry them out.
Lu Fei Fan didn’t see Shui Que in the building; this woman always seemed to appear and disappear at will.
He returned to the military camp where Suma and Da Biao were waiting for him.
“How is it?” Da Biao couldn't contain his impatience and hurriedly stepped forward to ask.
Lu Fei Fan shrugged, “It seems like we can only rely on ourselves.”
Suma nodded, “I’ll go with you.”
“No, I think you two should head back to the dock and find someone to help. I’ll go alone,” Lu Fei Fan said after a moment of thought.
“You’re going alone?” Suma looked at Lu Fei Fan as if he were crazy.
“Maybe I’ll be enough by myself,” Lu Fei Fan replied, starting to pack up without giving the two a chance to argue.
“What do you mean? Do you think I can’t handle it?” Da Biao was the first to object.
“No, I think if I go alone, I might have a better chance. You two should seek help at the dock. If I don’t return with the captain in three hours, remember to leave this place. I have a feeling this base isn’t very safe,” Lu Fei Fan said.
“Fine, but if you don’t come back by then, we’ll prepare to burn incense for you next year,” Suma said angrily before storming out.
This was the outcome Lu Fei Fan wanted. After finishing his packing, he left the camp with Da Biao.
At that moment, several soldiers from the Skeleton Legion were waiting for him, and an open-top off-road vehicle was parked in the clearing.
“Hello, are you Mr. Lu Fei Fan from the Fei Hu Battle Team? Our Company Commander sent us to deliver this. Please sign for it,” the lead soldier said, pointing at the open-top vehicle.
Lu Fei Fan took a look; the vehicle had been modified with reinforced armor. A ‘Huo Xiao’ rotary machine gun was mounted on the roof, and the front was equipped with tusk-like protective armor. The entire body had clearly been reinforced, and even the mailbox and engine had been modified—evidence of a master military engineer's handiwork.
Lu Fei Fan signed his name on the receipt, and then a person jumped into the back of the vehicle, pulling back the tarp to reveal a powerful, modified black battlefield motorcycle secured to the rear!
The design exuded a wild and violent aesthetic, clearly built for rugged terrain with noticeable shock absorption. On either side of the motorcycle were mounted two ‘Huo Xiao’ Machine Guns, and surrounding the motorcycle were stacks of ammunition boxes.
“Well then, we’ll take our leave.” The soldiers who had delivered the supplies saluted and departed, completely unfazed by Lu Fei Fan and his companions' strange gazes. Even if questioned, they likely wouldn’t divulge anything.
“It seems that guy Berg treats you pretty well,” Suma remarked as she stood by the vehicle, patting the motorcycle secured to the back. She then jumped down, closed the rear panel, and leaned against the vehicle while observing Lu Fei Fan.
“With all this stuff, you’ll need some help.” Without giving Lu Fei Fan a chance to respond, she climbed into the driver’s seat.
Lu Fei Fan looked at Da Biao, who patted his shoulder and said, “Leave finding someone at the dock to me. I can take care of myself.”
Lu Fei Fan nodded and intended to take the driver’s seat, but to his surprise, Suma was already sitting there, seemingly indifferent to his presence as she settled into the driver’s position.
Shaking his head, Lu Fei Fan had no choice but to walk around to the other side and get into the passenger seat.
Suma started the engine, and the roar of the motor filled the air as they began to drive out of the base. However, just as they reached the gate, armed soldiers blocked their path, and one person stepped forward.
It was none other than Ren Dongchuan.
Lu Fei Fan sighed and signaled for Suma to keep the vehicle running while he got out to negotiate.
Approaching Ren Dongchuan, Lu Fei Fan found him studying this young man intently.
“Can we talk for a moment?” Ren Dongchuan gestured for Lu Fei Fan to step aside to a place where their conversation wouldn’t be overheard by the soldiers.
“Honestly, your courage impresses me,” Ren Dongchuan said.
“Thank you for your recognition, Ren Dongchuan. It’s only right for a brother to go and rescue his own, even if there are knives outside. I will find a way to get out and save the captain and the others,” Lu Fei Fan replied calmly.
Ren Dongchuan nodded, not disputing him. “I’m not here to stop you. I came to tell you something.”
“Please go ahead, Ren Dongchuan,” Lu Fei Fan sensed that Ren Dongchuan meant him no harm.
“I’ve recently uncovered some information. I believe the Base Beast Attack Incident was orchestrated by certain individuals, so I don’t think your captain is still alive. That distress signal might just be bait,” Ren Dongchuan shared his true thoughts.
“You mean it’s a trap?” Lu Fei Fan caught on to Ren Dongchuan’s implication.
“Yes. Therefore, I advise you not to go. However, since you’ve made up your mind, I won’t try to stop you further. Just be careful. I had hoped that if you could become one of my subordinates, perhaps you would have a bright future ahead,” Ren Dongchuan said with a hint of regret.
“A person can give up many paths, but they must never abandon their brothers and friends. That is my father’s fundamental principle in life,” Lu Fei Fan stated firmly.
“Very well. Be cautious on your journey,” Ren Dongchuan said no more; he understood Lu Fei Fan’s determination. Further persuasion would be futile.
With a wave of his hand, he signaled the base guards to open the gate and let them through.
Lu Fei Fan took the passenger seat, while Suma looked at the calm Lu Fei Fan, initially expecting him to face obstacles. To her surprise, they were allowed to leave. This was unexpected; could it be that Lu Fei Fan had reached some agreement with Ren Dongchuan?
With her doubts lingering, she started the vehicle and drove out of the base. Outside, the setting sun bled into the earth as night fell once again.
“Sir, are you really going to let them go just like that?” a Captain of the Guards asked from behind Ren Dongchuan.
“People are like this; every choice is a sacrifice,” Ren Dongchuan remarked thoughtfully.
The team leader, who was busy with complex duties, scratched his head. He was just a rough guy who handled guns; he had no idea what Ren Dongchuan meant by such profound words.
As Lu Fei Fan's car left the base, someone stood in a building inside the compound, watching through the glass as Lu Fei Fan's vehicle disappeared over the horizon.
Knock, knock.
The door sounded, and then Berg entered, holding a cup of green liquid.
“Que, it’s time for your medication.”
Berg set down the cup of pungent potion.
Shui Que stared blankly out the window for a while before turning and walking to the table, where she picked up the drink and gulped it down in one go.
After finishing, she frowned as the taste in her stomach made her feel nauseous every time she drank it.
“Don’t make me drink this stuff again next time,” Shui Que said as she set the cup down and walked to an empty corner of the room to meditate on a mat.
“This recovery potion can effectively restore your damaged mental cells,” Berg explained.
“I still don’t trust that old man,” Shui Que replied.
“Alright, I won’t let him prepare this kind of potion for you next time, but you still need treatment from the Sparrow Cultivation Gene Chamber,” Berg suggested.
"I won't go," Shui Que replied without a second thought.
Berg looked at the resolute woman, unsure when she had become so stubborn. It seemed that during their previous interactions, she had not been so prickly; back then, they had shared warmth with each other.
After a moment of silence, Berg turned to leave.
"We're preparing to evacuate and head back," he said before stepping out.
After a while, Shui Que let out a soft sigh and glanced out the window.
The night descended, heavy and overwhelming.
Lu Fei Fan was genuinely worried about Suma's driving skills. In the darkness, it felt like the car was being tossed around several times. Of course, all of this happened with the headlights off. Fortunately, the cold of the Gobi night kept things from feeling stifling.
Suma turned off the car's headlights to avoid being pursued by beasts lurking in the dark.
Driving with the headlights on would undoubtedly make them an easy target for predators.
If Suma's driving skills were illuminated by the headlights, she would have been steady. However, since she had not practiced the Pulse Breathing Technique, her vision could not compare to Lu Fei Fan's. He often had to remind Suma about rocks ahead. At first, she didn't believe him, but after a few rough bumps that left them both uncomfortable, she began to accept his guidance.
After driving for over ten kilometers, they got out of the car to take care of some physiological needs. Finally, Suma let Lu Fei Fan take over driving.
With the assistance of the Pulse Breathing Technique, Lu Fei Fan's vision was naturally much clearer. Even when he spotted an unknown beast's droppings ahead, he could easily steer around it.
Suma couldn't help but admire Lu Fei Fan's keen eyesight. However, upon seeing the Azure Serpent Energy Sniper Rifle he carried, she felt reassured.
Those who can become snipers undoubtedly possess exceptional vision, whether in the darkness of night or the brightness of day, making it a piece of cake to drive without lights.
As they passed through a valley, two beams of headlights suddenly illuminated the vehicles of Lu Fei Fan and Suma from both sides. Before Lu Fei Fan could react!
The roar of an engine erupted as a car charged toward them.
“Not good!”
Before Lu Fei Fan could finish his warning, the other party opened fire!
Bang! Bang! Bang—
Bullets rained down like a shower of light, striking against his vehicle and the ground, sending up clouds of sparks and debris!
