Lu Fei Fan sat in the camp, holding a cup of hot milk in one hand while devouring a roasted chicken with the ferocity of a refugee fleeing from disaster. His eating habits were as unrefined as one could imagine.
Suma and Da Biao were seated across from him. Several times, Suma stood up, unable to resist the urge to ask questions, but each time Lu Fei Fan would finish his meal and immediately inquire if there was more to eat. Da Biao, struggling with his mobility, could only send Suma back to the Base Cafeteria three times before Lu Fei Fan was finally satisfied.
After letting out a long belch, Lu Fei Fan lifted the cup of hot milk and gulped it down, finally feeling a sense of fullness in his stomach. Just moments ago, he felt as if he could eat an entire cow—no, two cows, in fact.
However, Lu Fei Fan had only eaten until he was about seventy percent full because he feared that overeating would cause his stomach to burst. As for why he was so hungry, it stemmed from a sensation of having fallen into an abyss, which triggered the Pulse Energy of this world and resonated with Shui Que's spirit. The combined energies began to stir the natural Pulse Energy surrounding the base.
This also activated the energy barriers of this world, causing countless Pulse Energies to be extracted from the air, leading to strange phenomena.
Of course, it wasn't until Shui Que awakened him amidst the energy storm that Lu Fei Fan truly witnessed the terror of the Mind Storm; the chaos in the base resembled the aftermath of a massive explosion.
When explaining this to Ren Dongchuan, he likened it to accidentally triggering an explosion while disarming a bomb...
Ren Dongchuan frowned at this explanation. For ordinary soldiers, it seemed like the only reasonable explanation they could accept. However, for well-informed individuals like Niu Han, Ren Dongchuan, Berg, and Tang Kede, this explanation was utterly absurd.
Nevertheless, none of them called out Lu Fei Fan on his reasoning. Ren Dongchuan waved his hand for his aide to manage the scene, allowing Lu Fei Fan to escape unscathed. However, Ren Dongchuan did not press further; even General Niu Han could not discern what had truly happened. Asking would likely be futile.
Moreover, Berg's people informed Ren Dongchuan that the matter had been settled. Although Ren Dongchuan wished to investigate further, he found himself powerless to do so.
At that moment, Niu Han and Ren Dongchuan were engaged in a game of chess at a uniquely crafted wooden table in an office. The black and white pieces clashed on a cramped board as they fought fiercely for dominance.
Niu Han picked up a black piece and assessed the situation before placing it down again; he was at a disadvantage in this game and was deep in thought trying to devise a strategy. In contrast, Ren Dongchuan appeared much more relaxed as he casually picked up a white piece and blocked Niu Han's hard-earned opening with ease, effortlessly seeing through his opponent's intentions of creating a large formation.
"Was that fellow responsible for the anomaly caused by Pulse Energy resonance?" Ren Dongchuan asked as he glanced up at Niu Han, whose brow was furrowed in concentration.
“Hmm, it’s pretty much like that,” Niu Han replied, picking up a black stone to place it down, but then changed his strategy and put it in a different position.
The placement of the stone made Ren Dongchuan raise his eyebrows; the position he had worked so hard to create was now being seized by this fellow, forcing him to rethink his plans.
“Is this related to that Shui Que?” Ren Dongchuan asked tentatively, casually placing a stone on the side.
“Not good,” Niu Han said as he grabbed a handful of stones. He surveyed the situation and realized he could only struggle for another ten moves or so. Feeling a bit irritated, he tossed the black stones back into the bowl. “I’m done.”
Ren Dongchuan didn’t call out Niu Han’s admission of defeat; after all, one should always leave some room for maneuvering in life.
“Don’t you think that ever since Berg and their Skeleton Legion stationed at our base, a lot of things have happened?” Ren Dongchuan voiced a speculation that had lingered in his mind for quite some time.
Niu Han picked up the teapot beside him and poured himself a cup of tea. He looked up at Ren Dongchuan and responded with something off-topic.
“That woman is quite troublesome.”
Ren Dongchuan understood Niu Han's meaning and picked up the cup of tea that had long gone cold, taking a gentle sip.
“In my early years, when I first joined the military and performed exceptionally well, I was selected for the elite training base Tiger Camp. There, I had the fortune to meet a Mindstorm Master whose ability to tear through the void left me in awe; it’s something I still vividly remember,” Niu Han reminisced about an old story.
“Unless I reach master-level standards, with my current General-level strength, I have no confidence in dealing with a Mind Weaver,” Niu Han finished his tea and set down the empty cup. “Let’s go again.”
Ren Dongchuan nodded as they both picked up their stones and returned them to their respective bowls, preparing to set up for the next match.
However, just then, an unexpected knock on the door interrupted them.
Knock, knock.
"Report!"
The voice of the Messenger came from outside the door.
"Come in."
Ren Dongchuan called out.
A soldier opened the door and appeared before the two men. He saluted them and handed over a freshly printed battle report.
Ren Dongchuan took it, opened it, and furrowed his brow tightly.
"What’s wrong?" Niu Han asked when he saw Ren Dongchuan deep in thought.
"Take a look for yourself." Ren Dongchuan handed the report to Niu Han.
Niu Han glanced at it, stroking his chin. "I can’t believe we’re receiving a distress signal at this time."
"Go, summon all the officers for a meeting. Also, bring Suma and the members of the Fei Hu Battle Team." Ren Dongchuan instructed.
"Yes." The soldier turned and left, closing the door behind him.
In the camp, Lu Fei Fan was feeling overwhelmed. He had already explained to Suma, this stubborn woman, three times that she needed to focus on her own cultivation instead of being distracted by the Pulse Energy Storm, but she simply wouldn’t listen, thinking he was just trying to fool her.
Da Biao felt a sense of relief wash over him. After all the fear and anxiety, seeing his brothers safe brought him immense joy.
At that moment, the tent flap of the military camp was lifted.
“Is this the camp of the Fei Hu Battle Team?” a soldier inquired.
“Yes,” Lu Fei Fan replied, feeling as though this soldier was a savior. He sensed that if he continued to dodge and lie under Suma's piercing gaze, he would soon be torn apart.
“Ren Dongchuan asked me to inform a few of you to report to the Operations Room for a meeting.” The soldier finished speaking and turned to leave.
Lu Fei Fan let out a sigh of relief, disregarding his gear as he dashed out.
Seeing Lu Fei Fan bolt away faster than a rabbit, Suma immediately chased after him, while Da Biao hopped along behind them.
When the three arrived at the Operations Room, they found a group of officers, including Ren Dongchuan, gathered around a map, deep in analysis.
“Report, the personnel have arrived,” the Messenger stood at attention and announced.
Ren Dongchuan waved his hand, signaling the Dah Tou Bing to step down. He then beckoned Suma and Lu Fei Fan over.
“This is a distress message we received ten minutes ago. Take a look,” Ren Dongchuan said as he handed them a brief communication report.
Lu Fei Fan took it and glanced at it before immediately asking Ren Dongchuan, “Where are they now?”
Ren Dongchuan gestured to an officer nearby, who marked a location on the Sand Table Map. The officer pointed with a command stick to a spot that was quite far from their current base—essentially requiring them to traverse the entire island.
“What’s wrong?” Da Biao asked Suma about Lu Fei Fan.
Lu Fei Fan passed the message he had received to the two of them. After reading it, Suma took a deep breath, while Da Biao became even more agitated and struggled to control his emotions.
“We have to go rescue them!” Da Biao said to Ren Dongchuan.
“I’m sorry, but if it were any other time, I would definitely dispatch the Special Operations Team for a rescue. However, given the current situation…” Ren Dongchuan had to consider the overall safety of the base; if those Mutated Beasts launched another attack on the base…
“Then at least we should call for help from the Expeditionary Force. Even if we send a few Expedition Warships around to the other side of the island to find a way to rescue them, that would be better than doing nothing,” Suma argued reasonably.
“I already requested support from a Flying Ship two minutes ago, but higher-ups instructed us to hold our ground,” Ren Dongchuan stated. He felt no need to lie to Suma or the Special Operations Team leaders about this matter. Losing their trust would only tarnish the reputation of the base and ultimately make things difficult for him.
“Is Ren Dongchuan really going to just watch my team leaders wait to die in that hellhole?” Da Biao shouted, unable to contain his emotions. Many people in the Command Hall turned to look at him.
Ren Dongchuan did not get angry; he understood this kind of emotion.
Lu Fei Fan stepped forward, pressing down on Da Biao’s urge to continue. “I request that Ren Dongchuan send a few people with us to rescue them.”
“Well…” Ren Dongchuan hesitated. “I don’t have any extra personnel available right now. However, you can seek assistance from Colonel Berg; he dispatched a battalion from the port this morning to reinforce the base.”
Suma wanted to say something else but was stopped by Lu Fei Fan.
“Alright, thank you, Ren Dongchuan,” Lu Fei Fan said before leading a somewhat frustrated Da Biao and Suma out of the room.
Once outside the Command Hall, Suma turned to Lu Fei Fan and asked.
“Are you really planning to seek help from 6Berg?”
“Why not?” Lu Fei Fan stroked his chin, standing in the open space of the base and gazing at the office building in the distance, which was now guarded by soldiers. It had previously been Ren Dongchuan's command center, but it had completely transformed into 6Berg's temporary headquarters, now surrounded by heavily armed guards.
“Wait for me back at the camp. I’ll be back soon,” Lu Fei Fan instructed.
Da Biao wanted to accompany Lu Fei Fan, but was stopped by Suma. Confused, Da Biao looked at Suma.
“It might be better if he goes alone,” Suma said before turning to head back to the camp.
Da Biao didn’t quite understand this statement, but he recalled hearing about the soldiers who survived on the battlefield fighting alongside that woman. He thought that perhaps 6Berg would show some leniency towards Lu Fei Fan because of her. He hoped that would be the case.
Watching Lu Fei Fan’s figure disappear into the building, Da Biao turned and limped back to the camp, burdened with thoughts. If Lu Fei Fan’s plea for help failed and no one in the base came to their aid, even though he was injured, he would still follow Lu Fei Fan to that place to rescue them.
After all, the one seeking help was their captain, who had fought alongside them like an older brother.
