The base was illuminated brightly as night fell, with the remaining soldiers continuously fortifying their positions. The lines of defense around the base were being rebuilt, with the Skeleton Legion responsible for two fronts, while Ren Dongchuan's men and the Yong Bing Tuan each guarded one.
After this battle, the relationship between the Skeleton Legion and the base personnel, as well as those mercenaries, had improved significantly, with past conflicts fading away.
However, medical resources at the base remained critically scarce. Many soldiers underwent surgery without anesthesia, succumbing to pain and fainting. Those who managed to endure would likely live on with severe disabilities.
Those who could not withstand it would forever close their eyes. This battle had become a dark chapter in everyone's life, with a longer road and greater challenges still ahead.
The dead were gone forever, while the living had to endure their suffering.
Lu Fei Fan and Suma were helping out in the hospital. Many soldiers were assisting as well, even Da Biao, a patient who could still walk, offered his bed to others in need.
After their busy shift, Da Biao and Lu Fei Fan returned to the camp. The base camp felt emptier now. The two ate in silence before sitting in the Camp to drink.
With no news of their captain and the Swarm wreaking havoc, both men shared an unspoken worry that something might have happened to him.
Eventually, Da Biao fell asleep drunkenly, leaving Lu Fei Fan to drink alone. This cruel world was revealing just a glimpse of its harsh reality to him; humanity's struggle against other races was always a gamble where lives were exchanged for experience and progress.
He couldn't help but wonder how the girl who saved them was doing.
At that moment, in a larger tent within 6 Berg's mechanical assembly camp, Tang Kede was adjusting a machine connected to a cylindrical glass treatment pod. Inside it floated Shui Que, submerged in liquid with an oxygen tube inserted into her mouth, continuously supplying her with oxygen. She lay there with her eyes closed, lost in slumber, her pale face devoid of color appearing remarkably serene.
6 Berg stood outside the glass pod, silently watching the sleeping figure inside. His tall and straight posture seemed drained of much of its spirit.
In the distance, after finishing his adjustments and briefing several researchers dressed in white lab coats, Tang Kede approached 6 Berg and stood beside him, both gazing at Shui Que in the treatment pod.
“Will she wake up?” Berg suddenly asked.
“That's... hard to say. She has consciousness, but it’s like she’s in a deep sleep without awareness,” Tang Kede explained.
“Are you saying she might sleep forever?” Berg turned sharply to glare at Tang Kede.
“Ah, no, no, no.” Tang Kede hurriedly clarified, “What I mean is that she might wake up soon, or it could take a while. We can’t be certain at this moment. But I can assure you that she will definitely awaken. It's just that her mind is injured, and she has exhausted herself, falling into a sleep for self-repair. All we can do is help facilitate her recovery process.”
“If we hadn’t conducted the experimental mission, this wouldn’t have happened,” Berg said, suddenly filled with regret.
“Don’t let one setback make you forget the distant goal you originally aimed to reach,” Tang Kede replied.
Berg fell silent for a moment. “Doctor.”
“Ah?” Tang Kede was taken aback.
“I think our experiment has spiraled out of control,” Berg said.
“Major, you shouldn’t say such things lightly. The data we’ve collected so far is beneficial; at least the overall direction hasn’t deviated. Just these data alone could secure our place in history and change the course of humanity,” Tang Kede reassured him.
Berg didn’t respond and seemed lost in thought. Even the subordinate who approached the door to report something was waved away by Tang Kede.
“Go back and rest well. She’ll be fine. Perhaps tomorrow she’ll open her eyes and see you,” Tang Kede said, patting Berg on the shoulder before moving on to attend to his own tasks. Comforting others wasn’t exactly his strong suit.
At that moment, Ren Dongchuan was sitting face to face with Niu Han in the office. In front of them were a cup of hot coffee and a map.
"Are you sure all this is true?" Ren Dongchuan asked Niu Han again.
Niu Han calmly sipped his coffee. "I saw it with my own eyes."
"Then it seems someone is secretly doing something unsavory on my turf!" A few names flashed through Ren Dongchuan's mind, but without direct evidence, he couldn't report it to the higher-ups of the Expeditionary Force. If he could, it would surely elevate his position and get him out of this hellhole. The current situation was all thanks to those people.
"Regardless, I can't leave the base any longer," Niu Han said seriously as he set down his coffee.
Ren Dongchuan understood what he meant and nodded in agreement. The lost assets could be recovered once things stabilized; it would just take some time. However, now that he was caught up in this mess, he needed to find a way to extricate himself from this turmoil. Otherwise, he would eventually be crushed and left with nothing.
"Report!" someone called from outside the door.
"Come in!" Ren Dongchuan said as he put away the map.
A subordinate entered, standing straight.
"What is it?" Ren Dongchuan asked coldly.
"The Blood Wolf Squad has returned; they request entry into the base!" the soldier reported.
Ren Dongchuan thought for a moment and then recalled, "Sun Xingcai? They actually survived?"
At the entrance of the base, Lu Fei Fan and Suma stood coldly watching Sun Xingcai outside. The two off-road vehicles were covered in signs of a rough encounter, clearly having faced some significant trouble.
Sun Xingcai paced anxiously.
"Open the door! I need to see your commander!" he shouted, but no one responded. Even the defensive artillery at the entrance was aimed at them; if they attempted to force their way in, the soldiers on duty would not hesitate to fire.
After all, Sun Xingcai had previously violated the base's shooting regulations and falsely accused Lu Fei Fan. For the sake of justice, he had been expelled from the base. Even though he claimed it was voluntary, it effectively meant he had been blacklisted by the base. Despite the current extraordinary circumstances, these soldiers adhered strictly to the rules.
Thus, including Sun Xingcai, the Blood Wolf Squad had lost their qualification to enter the base for resupply and rest.
Ren Dongchuan and Niu Han arrived at the entrance. Upon seeing Lu Fei Fan, Ren Dongchuan patted his shoulder, though it was unclear whether it was a gesture of goodwill or a statement of his stance.
After all, Lu Fei Fan's performance during the defense of the base was well recognized. If Ren Dongchuan wanted to maintain morale, he could not disregard his own regulations.
Seeing Ren Dongchuan, Sun Xingcai became somewhat agitated.
"Ren Dongchuan, open the door! My team members are injured! They need urgent medical attention!" Sun Xingcai shouted loudly.
"Sorry, the Base Hospital is currently operating at full capacity and cannot accept any more injured personnel," Ren Dongchuan replied candidly.
"Don't give me that nonsense! What do you mean it's full?" Sun Xingcai clearly did not believe Ren Dongchuan's words and shouted in frustration, "Ren Dongchuan, after working together for so many years—five or six years at least—are you really going to be so heartless?"
Ren Dongchuan looked at the somewhat irrational Sun Xingcai and shook his head. "I'm speaking the truth. You’ve seen the situation outside the base; you clearly know what the base has endured."
"I don’t care!" Sun Xingcai shouted at Ren Dongchuan. "If you don’t let me in today, I’ll fight you to the death!"
He drew his pistol and aimed it at Ren Dongchuan, prompting everyone inside the base to raise their weapons in response to Sun Xingcai.
Ren Dongchuan remained calm, and Niu Han beside him maintained an air of detachment, showing no intention of intervening.
Lu Fei Fan and Suma stood silently nearby; it was best to leave this matter to Ren Dongchuan, as he was in charge of the base.
"Think about your team members," Ren Dongchuan advised Sun Xingcai kindly.
Sun Xingcai felt overwhelmed and turned to glance at the exhausted driver in the vehicle. Although they were on the same side, it was his own irrationality that had led to this situation. In another vehicle, two of his team members sat weakly in their seats, clearly gravely injured. If they didn’t get treatment soon, Xu would not survive.
"Going to the dock now might still offer hope," Ren Dongchuan added. "I really can’t take in any more injured here. I sent two batches of wounded to the dock this evening to catch a boat back to Fallen Zone Field Hospital."
"Ren Dongchuan! Remember this!" Sun Xingcai gritted his teeth in frustration and shot a furious glare at Lu Fei Fan, indicating that he would remember this grudge.
"We're leaving!" Sun Xingcai turned and jumped into the driver's seat of a vehicle, starting it up and driving away with another vehicle in tow.
Ren Dongchuan sighed, shook his head, and then turned back to his office.
Niu Han followed him out, while Suma and Lu Fei Fan initially intended to return to the military camp. However, not long after, a barrage of gunfire erupted outside the base, accompanied by the anguished roars of some ferocious beast.
The crowd looked out from the base into the night, where a battle was raging in the distance. It was likely the group led by Sun Xingcai, who had not gone far.
Suddenly, a tank erupted in flames, and even from afar, they could hear Sun Xingcai's furious roar.
"I’ll fight you to the end!"
They watched as an off-road vehicle crashed into a Beast Horde, followed by a loud explosion that illuminated the scene. It revealed a group of mutated Azure Eye Wolves besieging the convoy. Gunfire rang out twice, then silence fell. Instead, they heard the anguished cries of beasts fighting among themselves over their prey.
Everyone knew what this meant.
This was the fate of those who disobeyed the rules of the base. Although some felt pity, no one dared to speak up; who knew if they would be the next Sun Xingcai?
Thus, they could only pretend not to hear about the events unfolding in the wilderness.
After this deadly interlude, the base fell back into silence, allowing the stationed soldiers to relax and take a breather.
Lu Fei Fan was also training within the base. The day's battle had given him some insights, but he never expected that after finishing his training, he would receive an urgent message that left him with a difficult choice!
