The Swarm crashed against the stronghold like a raging tide. Despite only five defenders holding the line, their ammunition was plentiful, bolstered by two Huo Xiao Machine Guns.
All four of them were seasoned fighters, and in this moment, ranks and titles meant nothing; it was all about their seamless cooperation, relying on each other’s lives and pushing each individual’s potential to the limit.
Lu Fei Fan maneuvered around the perimeter of the stronghold, continuously assisting in the battlefield's offensive. After two waves of attack, the Swarm could not breach this position.
In mid-air, Shui Que seemed to have become aware of the importance of this stronghold. She gradually retreated to hover above it. The sheer number of Cockroach Beetles was overwhelming, and her Pulse Energy was depleting rapidly; she was struggling to keep herself afloat. Fortunately, the ground defenses occasionally cleared some of the more troublesome Cockroach Beetle Swarms for her.
This situation could not turn the tide of battle. Lu Fei Fan clearly understood that to win this war, they needed to annihilate the Swarm lurking within the clouds. The Swarm being continuously deployed from the overcast sky was crucial to their victory.
Thus, Lu Fei Fan began switching ammunition, loading plasma energy sniper rounds. He fired into the clouds, unleashing torrents of plasma that incinerated swathes of Cockroach Beetles that had yet to take flight.
Initially, Shui Que thought Lu Fei Fan had simply missed his shots, but after several rounds, she realized he was deliberately targeting the clouds. She too became aware of his intentions.
Shui Que carefully observed the distant clouds and confirmed her suspicions: large groups of Swarm were indeed falling from above!
The queen of these Swarm must be hiding within those clouds!
Shui Que suddenly gathered all her Pulse Energy; Light Bullets surged forth as six beams of light whirled around her form. These rotating circles shredded through the incoming Cockroach Beetles as she began to ascend from the high ground towards the dark clouds.
“Cover her!” Lu Fei Fan shouted to a nearby soldier manning a Fire Howl Gun.
Without questioning why, that soldier trusted Lu Fei Fan’s command and aimed the Fire God Cannon into the sky, unleashing a barrage that cleared a narrow area in mid-air.
However, ammunition quickly ran out. Cursing under his breath and unable to reload in time, he grabbed a nearby Energy Submachine Gun and opened fire at the oncoming beetles charging towards their position.
Without the Machine Gun's cover, pressure mounted on Shui Que. The Cockroach Beetles seemed to sense her intention to assault the clouds and surged forward en masse, countless Cockroach Beetles charging at her in a frenzy!
Her light shield could not withstand such intense impacts, and suddenly, an energy wall surged up to cover her!
Just as she found herself isolated and helpless, boom!
A plasma explosion erupted around her, and a swarm of Cockroach Beetles was struck by the electric currents, falling one by one.
She glanced down at the ground, where Lu Fei Fan was continuously firing his Energy Sniper Rifle, bang bang bang—
The pinpoint energy sniper rounds exploded around Shui Que, slowing down the advance of the Swarm and releasing her excess energy. She began to push into the cloud layer, wary of what might be hidden within; she dared not be careless and summoned all her strength to charge into the clouds!
The Cockroach Beetles continued their assault. Lu Fei Fan on the ground either stood upright or knelt as he shot into the air. The frequency of Plasma Bullets exploding in midair rivaled that of a machine gun, and his steady gunfire provided reassurance to the surrounding warriors fighting fiercely. An exceptional sniper could turn the tide of battle on the battlefield.
Although the Swarm was numerous, as long as Lu Fei Fan's gunfire echoed across this high ground, they had an extra layer of trust to rely on!
With a skilled sniper like Lu Fei Fan fighting alongside them, their hopes for victory grew stronger!
At that moment, Lu Fei Fan's mind had no time for anything else; he was left with only the numb routine of loading bullets, aiming, shooting, repositioning, and aiming again—shooting without daring to pause for even half a second.
After finishing with Plasma Bullets, Lu Fei Fan switched to Crowd Control Bullets. Once those were exhausted, he moved on to Ice Bombs. Finally, after using up all his Ice Bombs, he switched back to regular ammunition.
With Lu Fei Fan’s relentless support, Shui Que managed to break through into the cloud layer.
Inside the clouds, glowing orbs surged as countless Cockroach Beetles fell from above. Lu Fei Fan continued to scatter any beetles attempting to fly into the dark clouds for support!
Suddenly, a brilliant light erupted from within the black clouds. An astonishing Pulse Energy tore through some object in midair, and a stream of light burst forth from the clouds like a raging torrent!
A figure suddenly descended from the clouds like a floating leaf, and Lu Fei Fan leaped forward, rushing toward the spot where the figure was falling.
But someone was faster than him. The figure transformed in mid-air into two afterimages, and in an instant, they reached Shui Que, landing on top of a building!
As Lu Fei Fan ran halfway, he abruptly stopped and looked at the person—it was Berg!
Lu Fei Fan quietly retreated to higher ground while Berg was surrounded by Armored Warriors who were shooting in a coordinated manner, along with several highly skilled fighters. These were likely the elite guards around Berg.
They provided cover for Berg as he crouched down, holding Shui Que. He infused his Pulse Energy into Shui Que's frail, pale body, and gradually, a hint of color returned to her face.
"Look! There's something in the clouds!" someone shouted.
Berg looked up to see a massive Oval Worm shaped like a leaf, descending with its Tentacles trailing behind it. It had stabilized itself after falling several dozen meters and was slowly trying to escape the battlefield, but its speed was sluggish, indicating it had already sustained serious injuries!
It seemed that Shui Que had been fighting it in the clouds.
"Concentrate fire and bring it down!" Berg's Consciousness reached a critical point as he decisively issued the command.
Immediately, the remaining fierce Artillery and Ballistic Missiles at the base unleashed a barrage toward the exposed body of the Mother Worm. Cockroach Beetles fought desperately to provide cover, but it was futile; the firepower focused on the already wounded Oval Bug, causing large chunks of flesh and blood to scatter down.
After enduring numerous attacks, its barely functional body began to collapse. Strange screeches echoed through the air as the Oval Bug signaled for retreat!
As large numbers of Cockroach Beetles covered the Mother Worm's escape, everyone could only shoot at them, taking down many Cockroach Beetles but feeling increasingly anxious.
Just then, several arc-shaped light orbs shot up from within the base. These orbs sliced through the air like terrifying blades and struck the oval-shaped Mother Bug in an instant!
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The Mother Worm let out a wail as it retreated into the distance, its massive body splattered with chunks of flesh and blood. Countless Cockroach Beetles rushed to support it, attempting a desperate struggle for survival.
But the powerful figure from the base would not let it escape easily.
A silhouette engulfed in roaring flames shot up straight from the base, crashing into the oval-shaped Mother Worm. The Mother Bug was pierced through with a thunderous impact!
The main body of the Mother Bug began to fall, its heavy form slamming down onto the Ground, stirring up waves of sand.
The remaining warriors on the battlefield erupted in cheers.
As the figure descended slowly, Lu Fei Fan finally recognized him as a dark-skinned Bald Muscular Man, wielding a Metal Special Long Staff and clad in Fighting Armor.
He didn’t land fully on the Ground before he vanished again, charging toward the front lines where the Meat Nest Mobile Fortresses and swarms of Scythe Beetles were. With a single sweep of his staff, he struck down numerous monsters, unleashing overwhelming force that crushed everything in his path!
Behind the clouds, the main body of the Mother Bug roared as it was defeated, prompting the Swarm to begin their retreat.
The powerful warrior did not pursue; he simply watched as the Swarm fled.
The surviving warriors in the base erupted into cheers, celebrating their victory over the Swarm, proving they had survived.
Lu Fei Fan gazed at the staff-wielding Bald Man, whose emanating Pulse Energy clearly indicated that he was a General level powerhouse!
For someone like Lu Fei Fan, who was still considered inexperienced as a Fuser, this was an entirely different realm; just a single move from this man could alter the course of battle.
The muscular man returned to the base, and the soldiers began rescuing their comrades. Some started finishing off any surviving beetles; this was a potential threat that could not be left alive. Just moments ago, Lu Fei Fan had witnessed one soldier being blinded by a nearly dead Cockroach Beetle that had self-destructed!
As Lu Fei Fan lay sprawled on the ground with four other soldiers, they paid no mind to the corpses around them. Exhausted, they passed around a cigarette, taking turns for a deep drag. Even Lu Fei Fan felt an immense sense of relief in smoking at that moment; it was blissful to relax his nerves. He looked up at the sky as the sandstorm passed, leaving behind a chaotic emptiness that reminded him of the brutal battle they had just endured. Many faces that had once been alive now lay forever closed here.
When Suma arrived at the highlands and saw Lu Fei Fan, she gave him a punch and loudly scolded him for being too impulsive. Lu Fei Fan didn't mind much; after all, Suma's subordinates had all died, which was understandable. Now that Suma was concerned about him, it was clear that she had begun to see him as her comrade.
The two exchanged no further pleasantries and joined the efforts to clean up the battlefield and rescue others. Everyone worked in silence, many bodies on the battlefield were unidentifiable, and some were even completely missing.
The busy base was filled with the smell of blood and hurried footsteps. The Bald Muscular Man walked through the base, receiving salutes and bows from the warriors.
He was undoubtedly the guardian General of this base. Without him, perhaps the Mother Worm would not have been defeated. Of course, the main credit actually belonged to Shui Que, but many people were not familiar with her; they only recognized this General who had always protected them.
Ren Dongchuan approached the Bald Muscular Man, his face smeared with dirt and fatigue evident in his demeanor. He held a flask of liquor, taking swigs intermittently.
"Good thing you made it back in time," Ren Dongchuan said, looking at the chaotic battlefield outside.
"My aircraft malfunctioned on the way back; I'm sorry for being late," Niu Han replied, feeling somewhat guilty. The losses at the base would set Ren Dongchuan back significantly in strength, and it was uncertain whether he could continue to command this base.
"I should have known better than to ask you to go investigate," Ren Dongchuan said regretfully. He surveyed the desolate scene at the base; many of the fallen warriors had been with him for years. His years of hard work had been exhausted in this battle.
Niu Han fell silent, unsure of how to comfort him. He estimated that fewer than two hundred people would survive from what used to be a base of nearly two thousand.
