No matter how grand or arrogant the other party might be, it was only natural for them to draw a gun at someone like Lu Fei Fan, a mere member of the Special Operations Team. After all, he held no power or influence, and facing an entire army of Colossal Creatures, he had to remain rational.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to offend," Lu Fei Fan apologized once again to the person hidden beneath the Hat Hood.
The Captain continued to aim his gun at Lu Fei Fan, demanding answers, but the figure under the Hat Hood raised a delicate hand, pale as green onions, to stop him.
"It’s fine," came a soft yet somewhat weary female voice.
She then walked directly into Ren Dongchuan's office lounge. The Captain had no choice but to lower his weapon, and his subordinates retreated from their encirclement.
"Next time, keep your eyes open," the Captain huffed as he walked away.
Lu Fei Fan silently took note of his appearance. Since he was so overbearing and reckless, perhaps it was time for them to face some consequences.
Before long, Lu Fei Fan arrived at the cooking area of the camp. The Cook Team Leader recognized him immediately; after all, Lu Fei Fan always brought a bottle of liquor for each of them whenever he visited. Naturally, they had developed a fondness for this young man and had grown increasingly familiar with him.
"Hey, Fan's here!"
"Yes! What delicious dish is Team Leader Cui preparing today? Am I in for a treat tonight?"
"Ah, don’t even mention it." The Cook Team Leader, a round and hearty man drenched in sweat, was busy kneading dough and chopping vegetables alongside several subordinates. Nearby, large baskets overflowed with various meats and vegetables.
"What’s going on?" Lu Fei Fan asked knowingly, feigning ignorance as he inquired about their situation.
“I don’t know where this large group of people came from. It was already difficult for the few hundred of us here to manage, and now another two hundred have arrived. We’re working overtime, and this workload is going to wear us out,” said Team Leader Cui, wiping the sweat from his brow before continuing to knead the dough.
“No wonder I saw so many people in strange military uniforms. Let me help you out,” Lu Fei Fan said, rolling up his sleeves and pretending to assist with chopping vegetables. It seemed he had done this more than once or twice before, and his knife skills were impressive; he chopped quickly, much to Team Leader Cui’s delight.
“Ah, you’re a good soul. If it were someone else, they’d just order us around. Hehe, once we finish up tonight, I’ll cook a few dishes and treat you to a drink,” Team Leader Cui said cheerfully.
“No way, that’s not how it works. As per our usual arrangement, I’ll buy the drinks,” Lu Fei Fan replied, swinging the large knife with ease. In no time at all, he had effortlessly chopped a piece of meat into perfectly symmetrical ribs.
With Lu Fei Fan’s help, the efficiency of the Catering Team doubled. However, Team Leader Cui was unaware that Lu Fei Fan had added many unknown ingredients into the dishes while chopping.
After two or three hours of busy work, the Catering Team was nearly finished. Lu Fei Fan prepared a soup and took his leave; he hadn’t added anything to the soup since it was meant for Da Biao.
In the hospital, Lu Fei Fan fed Da Biao spoonful by spoonful of soup. Da Biao had regained some consciousness and was looking much better. Lu Fei Fan glanced at the time; it was five in the evening, and mealtime at the base had already begun.
At this hour, the dining area was surely packed with people.
Similarly, high-ranking officers like Ren Dongchuan had their own private chefs and wouldn’t eat from the communal pots in the camp. Since Ren Dongchuan’s chef had been sent to cook for Berg, he could only send his subordinates to fetch a portion of communal food. Although it wasn’t as delicious as what his private chef would make, it wasn’t bad either; after all, he had risen through the ranks from this very level.
Ren Dongchuan’s meal was quite simple: a bowl of white rice, a bowl of vegetables, a plate of sauced ribs, and a bowl of clear soup.
He sat in a makeshift office that used to be a storage room. Since his building had been requisitioned by Berg, he had no choice but to work here. He ignored the food placed beside him by his subordinate as he diligently corrected official documents while wearing glasses. After some time had passed and the food had cooled down, he finally picked up the soup and took a couple of sips before diving back into his paperwork.
Little did he know that what happened next would catch him completely off guard.
As the curtain fell, darkness enveloped the earth.
The office building of Ren Dongchuan was illuminated, and the sounds of various machines whirring filled the air outside. Captain Berg stood by the window, gazing at the bustling base that glowed like daylight. The night breeze blew gently, causing his handsome face to appear somewhat indifferent.
Before long, the office door was suddenly pushed open.
“Colonel, it’s bad news,” the Captain reported, his expression grim.
“What’s got you so flustered?” Berg frowned.
“Half of the people downstairs have been poisoned!” The Captain's stomach growled unexpectedly as he finished speaking, and he struggled to suppress his discomfort while waiting for Berg's orders.
Berg waved his hand, signaling him to take care of his stomach issue, then headed straight toward his unit's camp. Inside the camp, military doctors and nursing staff were already busy coming in and out, treating those who had been poisoned with IV fluids.
Berg pushed open the largest tent, which could accommodate nearly a hundred people. Almost half of them lay on their beds, weakly groaning. Four or five soldiers who had just attempted to leave the tent were startled to see Berg and immediately stood up straight to salute him. However, the sound of flatulence escaped them, prompting Berg to wave his hand for them to head to the restroom.
Grateful for the reprieve, the soldiers quickly scurried out, likely anticipating a crowded restroom. A few others who had just returned saw Berg and also rushed out, clutching their stomachs in discomfort.
Berg had a rough understanding of the situation now; nearly half of his troops had been poisoned.
Standing at the entrance of the tent, he watched as soldiers came and went, a cold glare narrowing his eyes. Who dared to poison his troops with such audacity?
Before long, Ren Dongchuan was brought in by a young officer. His complexion was also poor. Berg glanced at him and realized he too had suffered from the poison; however, that did not absolve him from suspicion.
“Ren Dongchuan, no one has ever dared to poison my troops before,” Berg's words were casual but laced with intense scrutiny.
“Report, Colonel. I will thoroughly investigate this matter and provide you with an explanation,” Ren Dongchuan replied. In fact, after noticing something was off with the food, he had immediately ordered military police to detain everyone from the catering team. If he hadn’t been poisoned himself, Berg would likely have executed him on the spot.
Even though he was under the jurisdiction of the Expeditionary Force, 6 Berg could still be dealt with according to rank on the battlefield. The fact that he wasn't executed on the spot was already a generous handling of the situation.
"It seems that not everyone in this base listens to your commands," 6 Berg remarked.
Ren Dongchuan had no words to refute this; he simply lowered his head and silently bore the immense pressure that 6 Berg had imposed on him.
After a while, the hunched figure of Tang Kede emerged from one of the camps, chuckling as he glanced at the soldiers busy rushing to the restroom.
"Interesting, interesting. It's been a long time since I've encountered such a comical situation," Tang Kede said with a smile.
"Dr. Tang, do you have any clues?" 6 Berg asked.
Tang Kede approached 6 Berg, chuckling a few times before saying, "Hehe, someone added some spoiled monster meat powder to the food. Of course, ordinary people can't handle it."
"Monster meat powder?" 6 Berg was somewhat skeptical.
"Yeah, it was mixed with four or five different kinds and added to the meals. If I hadn't brought some chemical solution, I wouldn't have been able to identify it. Don't worry; I've already given them some medicine. The rules of nature dictate that food can counteract each other; they won't die—at most, they'll recover in three or four days," Tang Kede said, his hands stuffed in his bulging pockets. He pulled out a pack of cigarettes and stuck one in his mouth, fumbling for a lighter. This time, however, Ren Dongchuan was quick enough to step forward and light it for him.
Tang Kede looked at the anxious Major of the Expeditionary Force, who was sweating profusely, took a puff of smoke, and smiled. "I still prefer when your Female Colonel gives me a cigarette." He patted Ren Dongchuan on the shoulder and walked away.
Ren Dongchuan stood there, lost in thought as he awaited 6 Berg's orders.
However, after hearing Tang Kede's report, 6 Berg became calm instead.
"You need to give me an explanation for this," 6 Berg said before tossing out those words, flicking his cloak and turning to leave with his aide.
Ren Dongchuan let out a breath, looking up at the starry sky above him. It seemed that sleep would elude him tonight.
In a hospital room, Lu Fei Fan remained inside, refraining from checking the situation outside. No matter what happened, he needed to shake off any suspicion to avoid getting entangled in it. He began to enter a meditative state, surrounded by two blazing suns in the Chaos Void, with dozens of illuminated stars floating around him. He started to utilize the Pulse Breathing Technique to immerse himself in a wondrous environment.
It felt as though he was floating in the deep sea, gliding forward. The joyous Pulse Energy continuously fueled him with power, but he soon encountered an invisible wall that obstructed his path. Despite several attempts to break through, he found no success.
As he drew closer, he noticed a faint Pulse Energy fluctuation emanating from the wall that hindered his swimming. Carefully, he infused his own Pulse Energy into it and discovered that his energy collided with the wall, creating a fierce resonance that caused cracks to appear on its surface!
However, those cracks seemed to be rapidly mending due to an unknown Pulse Energy. Lu Fei Fan poured all his consciousness into the Pulse Energy for a powerful impact.
Boom—
Like a great whale leaping from the ocean and crashing back down!
Once submerged, Lu Fei Fan felt as if he had entered a fairyland. Schools of colorful fish surged towards him, brushing past with shimmering seaweed adorning the entire world like an Ocean Fairy Tale Kingdom.
Suddenly, a violent current transformed into a water dragon that wrapped around him and propelled him upward. When he descended again, the ocean had vanished!
Just as he was about to crash onto the parched ground below, Lu Fei Fan abruptly opened his eyes, reflecting on the bizarre and wondrous illusion he had just experienced, feeling a flicker of enlightenment.
At the same time, in an office building where Ren Dongchuan had been earlier, in one of the rooms, Pulse Energy glowed like dancing lights around a figure. In the center of this luminous sphere sat a Gray-Clad Woman with long legs and a fair, delicate face. She suddenly opened her eyes wide as the surrounding Pulse Energy disrupted the air currents around her. With a fierce shout, countless waves of Pulse Energy surged back into her body. Her pale face was drenched in sweat as she gasped for breath.
Knock knock!
Someone was at the door.
"Please come in." She pulled the Hat Hood over her head.
Berg walked in, taking in the chaotic room filled with scattered papers and clutter.
"Shui Que, what's wrong?" Berg asked with concern.
"A whale has intruded into my 'ocean,'" the woman named Shui Que explained.
Berg pondered for a moment; when it came to the cultivation of Pulse Energy, he was not as adept as the woman before him and couldn't offer her any explanations.
"Take care of yourself. Don't overexert yourself. In a little while, we’ll be able to go back," Berg comforted her.
Shui Que nodded, saying little more.
Berg decided not to disturb her further and closed the door behind him as he left.
However, Shui Que pushed open the window, and a fierce wind rushed in, blowing her hood off. Her long black hair flowed like a dragon in the night.
On the other side, dark clouds churned, thunder rumbled, and it seemed a storm was brewing.
