On the horizon, a cloud of dust surged toward the base.
Everyone at the base fell into a state of high tension, uncertain if this would be another Beast Attack. For them, such a situation could spell trouble.
One thousand meters, eight hundred meters...
As the dust drew closer, soldiers in the Viewing Tower waved signal flags to inform those below that it was not a Beast Attack. However, just because it wasn't a Beast Attack didn't mean the crisis was over.
When the dust cloud rolled in within a few hundred meters, and visibility improved, they saw that it was a convoy. The roar of engines could be heard from afar.
Ren Dongchuan watched as the convoy gradually approached the base's firing range. The commanding Male Lieutenant shouted through a megaphone.
“Please provide your convoy number. Otherwise, we ask you to leave; otherwise, we will open fire!”
The convoy slowly came to a halt just outside the range of fire. Ren Dongchuan stood atop a fortress building, peering through binoculars. He was astonished by the scale of the convoy, which consisted of four or five large trucks, in addition to three armored vehicles. Surrounding them were twenty to thirty military-modified battlefield demon-hunting hover motorcycles!
What shocked Ren Dongchuan even more was the high level of combat readiness among the personnel in this convoy. Their coordinated movements indicated they were a well-trained unit, and their uniform gray attire and equipment were evidently more elite than regular troops. Through his binoculars, he could see that there were at least ten members of an Armor team inside one of the trucks.
This was no mere convoy; it was clearly a fully equipped army!
At that moment, someone from the halted unit outside shouted toward the base.
“We are the Armored Guard of the Free Federation’s Third Legion!”
Ren Dongchuan prided himself on being well-acquainted with the Free Federation's military divisions, but he had rarely heard of the Third Legion's Armored Guard, which left him puzzled.
In his hesitation, he ordered someone to detain them and then picked up the Military Headquarters phone to dial the Expeditionary Force Headquarters.
“Hello, please check for me the unit number and detailed information on the Third Legion's Armored Guard. Yes, fax it to me immediately.”
After hanging up the phone, he felt a surge of anxiety. Outside, the adjutant was entangled in a standoff with the unexpected troops that had arrived uninvited, and it was clear to anyone watching that they were stalling for time.
The personnel from the Armored Guard also ceased their chatter, seemingly waiting for something.
Ren Dongchuan's heart sank. The commanding officer of this unit possessed exceptional military awareness and psychological resilience, which spelled trouble. If the fax came through and the unit's designation and details turned out to be nonexistent, his base would undoubtedly face a fierce battle.
However, the fax information soon printed out from the machine in his office. As he hurried over to retrieve the documents, his eyes widened in shock as he read aloud.
"Death Star... Skeleton Legion!"
Ren Dongchuan was momentarily struck with dread. How could such a mysterious Mo Ce unit appear here? What were their intentions? Moreover, he felt a chill run down his spine at the notorious reputation of the Skeleton Legion; wherever they went, death followed, earning them the moniker 'Death Star.'
The authority of this enigmatic unit was clearly above that of his base. Without hesitation, he ordered the gates to be opened to welcome them.
As the convoy of the Skeleton Legion entered the base, Ren Dongchuan assessed their numbers and equipment. It seemed to him that they barely constituted a standard company; clearly, they were only a fraction of a larger force—was there more behind them?
Ren Dongchuan stood with his adjutant in front of the building, waiting. Sure enough, from the lead off-road vehicle emerged a tall and handsome young man. His facial features were sharply defined as if carved from stone. From his attire—a pair of Military Boots from the Free Federation, a cape, and an imposing colonel's uniform—Ren Dongchuan could tell that this young man was someone destined for greatness within the Military Headquarters of the Free Federation.
Following him was a Captain and a woman cloaked entirely in black robes. He recognized her as a woman because he caught sight of her fair hands, smooth and gleaming as if polished to perfection, making him want to lift her hood to see if her face matched her elegance.
However, Ren Dongchuan suppressed that impulse and smiled warmly at the young man who had approached him and was surveying his surroundings.
"Who is in charge of this base?" asked the Captain beside the tall young man, his voice booming.
"I am," Ren Dongchuan stepped forward with a smile.
"Have your people set up camp for us and supply our military needs. We also require a separate office area," instructed the Captain, pointing at the office building behind Ren Dongchuan. "That one will do."
The Female Colonel behind Ren Dongchuan opened her mouth to protest but was stopped by his hand. He smiled and said, "Very well, we will comply with your request, Colonel."
The tall and handsome young man deliberately glanced at the woman under the hood, but she did not acknowledge him. Instead, he turned to her and said with concern, "You should rest for a bit."
The woman nodded and walked alone towards the office building. The young man's captain immediately waved his hand, signaling several people to block off the building.
Before long, a bald old man, around fifty years old, dressed in a white lab coat and wearing gold-rimmed glasses, hunchbacked his way over.
"Heh heh, this base is quite impressive. However, the energy station here isn't sufficient to activate the equipment."
"Then let's assemble it," the young man replied casually.
"Looks like that's the only option," the hunchbacked bald man said as he stuffed his hands into his pockets. He then pulled out a pack of cigarettes and began to smoke leisurely. After rummaging through his pockets for a lighter without success, he glanced at the female colonel standing behind Ren Dongchuan.
"Do you have a lighter, girl?"
"You..." The female colonel glared at the lecherous old man who was eyeing her with an inappropriate gaze, wishing she could shoot him on the spot.
However, since she smoked as well, she took out an elegant lighter and lit the old man's cigarette. He took a puff while looking down and then reached out to pinch her behind.
"Nice and firm back here; you must have good stamina in bed. I'll come find you tonight for some fun. Heh heh heh." With that lewd remark, he chuckled and turned to leave.
The female colonel suppressed her anger as she stood in front of Ren Dongchuan, who seemed oblivious to what had just happened, as if he were in another world entirely.
In Ren Dongchuan's eyes, his only opponent was the young man before him.
"What’s your name?" the tall and handsome young man asked as he removed his gloves.
"I'm not worthy; you can call me Ren Dongchuan," Ren Dongchuan introduced himself modestly.
The young man nodded, handing his gloves to the captain behind him before waving them off to get back to work. "Major Ren, we will be resting here for a while, but it won't be too long. You don't need to worry too much."
“Oh, ha ha, Colonel, you’re being too serious. Why would I worry? I’m just glad to welcome you,” Ren Dongchuan thought to himself, feeling a bit anxious but knowing he couldn’t show it.
“You don’t need to call me Colonel. You’re older than I am; you can just call me Six or Berg,” the tall young man said, his tone genuinely respectful.
“I wouldn’t dare. I’ll stick with calling you Colonel Six,” Ren Dongchuan replied cautiously, not wanting to fall into any traps set by this young man.
“Alright, suit yourself,” the young man said, seeming unconcerned. “Oh, by the way, that was Tang Kede.”
“Got it. Anything he needs, I’ll have my aide take care of it,” Ren Dongchuan said, doing his best to accommodate these unexpected guests.
“Good. If there’s nothing else, you can get back to your work,” Colonel Six waved his hand dismissively but suddenly remembered something. “Oh, right.”
Just as Ren Dongchuan was about to leave, he turned back, thinking Colonel Six had more instructions.
“It’s not very safe outside lately; have your people try to stay in as much as possible,” Colonel Six advised kindly.
“Oh, ha ha, thank you for the reminder, Colonel Six. I’ll go handle other matters now. If you need anything, just let me know,” Ren Dongchuan said before heading out with his aide.
The Female Colonel followed behind Ren Dongchuan with a hint of frustration as he walked with his hands behind his back, giving orders along the way.
“Qing, give them whatever they want.”
“What if their demands are too excessive?”
“Try to meet their requests as much as possible,” Ren Dongchuan pondered for a moment.
“We can’t afford to offend these people,” he added. “Just endure it; there’s no need to be too rigid. You’ll be following me up the ranks in the future; it’s important to be rational in your actions.”
“Yes,” Qing replied, stopping to salute and choosing not to follow Ren Dongchuan any longer.
Ren Dongchuan didn’t mind; it was normal for a deputy to endure some grievances. He would comfort him later, just as he had been comforted when he served as a deputy himself back in the day.
When Lu Fei Fan emerged from the hospital, he noticed that the base had suddenly become crowded with many new faces. Numerous sentry posts had been replaced, and these newcomers were equipped with uniform, advanced weaponry. Whether it was firearms or the Zhan Dao, they were all standard issue for the regular army of the Free Federation.
What surprised Lu Fei Fan even more was that these soldiers wore uniforms adorned with a skull insignia. He had never seen this unit before, but he noticed them unloading large machinery from trucks and moving it to the barracks for assembly. Among the equipment were components of an Energy Source being assembled. Lu Fei Fan was taken aback; this was an Energy Kinetic Machine constructed from two Energy Sources and a power sphere, something only the elite forces of the Free Federation would be equipped with.
He couldn’t believe he was witnessing this here.
As he walked through the base, focused on watching the assembly of the Energy Source, he accidentally bumped into someone who was completely covered in a hood. Lu Fei Fan caught a whiff of a pleasant fragrance.
“I’m sorry,” Lu Fei Fan apologized sincerely.
“Are you blind?” A Captain rushed over with several soldiers, surrounding him and immediately drawing their weapons at Lu Fei Fan.
Lu Fei Fan furrowed his brow. He had merely bumped into someone and hadn’t been hurt; wasn’t it a bit excessive for these soldiers to draw their guns and interrogate him?
