The sudden gunfire sent the entire base into a frenzy, with personnel frantically searching for the missing figure in black.
Even the Hounds were deployed, but their sense of smell seemed to have failed them that night. Several times they found clues, but only remnants like the black-clad man's helmet or clothing in the corners of various buildings; no substantial leads emerged.
Sun Xingcai had gathered his team, with five or six members of the Blood Wolf Squad following him like fierce predators. Each was fully armed, and even when confronted by Federal Soldiers attempting to intervene, they were roughly pushed aside.
No one had more reason to pursue the killer than they did, as the victim was one of their own. Moreover, the deceased had a significant blood relation to their captain, Sun Xingcai.
Sun Xingcai's primary target was naturally Da Biao, who had clashed with him over serum issues. He burst into Da Biao's guarded hospital room, only to find it empty except for Da Biao lying on the bed. He left two men to keep watch and then led the remaining squad members toward the rest area typically reserved for the Special Operations Team.
The soldiers at the care camp were easily swayed by their excuse of "capturing the killer." After all, these reckless individuals could be dangerous, and a mere camp guard like Dah Tou Bing dared not offend them lightly.
After consulting with a logistics young officer, Sun Xingcai arrived at Lu Fei Fan's camp. He instructed his subordinates to spread out and completely seal off the four corners, surrounding the camp.
"Listen inside! If you know what's good for you, come out!" Sun Xingcai shouted toward the camp.
After calling out once and receiving no response, he impatiently drew his gun and angrily ripped open the tent flap, only to see Lu Fei Fan stepping out.
"Oh? Isn't this the mighty Blood Wolf Leader? What brings you here in the dead of night?" Lu Fei Fan mocked upon seeing Sun Xingcai's furious demeanor.
Without a word, Sun Xingcai raised his gun and aimed it at Lu Fei Fan's head.
Unfazed, Lu Fei Fan looked back at Sun Xingcai with eyes as calm as if nothing had happened. He didn't inquire about the situation; he simply stared coldly at Sun Xingcai as if regarding a corpse.
Just as Sun Xingcai prepared to pull the trigger, Lu Fei Fan spoke up.
"What would happen if Captain Sun isn't confident enough to kill someone in the base?" Lu Fei Fan said coldly.
Sun Xingcai gritted his teeth, ready to pull the trigger, but at that moment, Ren Dongchuan arrived with a large group of soldiers.
“Sun Xingcai, stop right there!” Ren Dongchuan stepped forward, his voice commanding as he halted Sun Xingcai. Behind him, all the Federal Soldiers spread out, forming two lines—some kneeling, some standing—each one aiming their weapons at Sun Xingcai and Lu Fei Fan, effectively surrounding them.
Sun Xingcai still did not lower his gun, but the tension among his team members eased slightly. They realized that Ren Dongchuan, the base commander, had mobilized the base's forces against them. It was clear that Ren Dongchuan's bottom line was not to be provoked; otherwise, he would certainly order them to be shot on the spot.
“Captain…” one of the Blood Wolf Squad members called out to Sun Xingcai, urging him to calm down. The current situation was highly unfavorable for them.
Sun Xingcai glanced at Lu Fei Fan. Lu Fei Fan's expression was unreadable as he met Sun Xingcai's gaze. Sun Xingcai doubted that this fellow would dare to shoot; if he did, the entire Blood Wolf Squad would be doomed due to his impulsiveness. It wouldn’t just be one life lost.
After careful consideration, Sun Xingcai managed to suppress his urge and lowered his weapon. He realized he had to compromise for the sake of his team members who supported him. If he didn't, even if this crisis passed, the other members of Blood Wolf Squad would no longer trust him. Regaining their trust and forming a new Special Operations Team would become nearly impossible.
Seeing the situation de-escalate, Ren Dongchuan pushed through the crowd and stepped forward, flanked by a man and a woman who were both Captains.
“You know the rules of the camp,” Ren Dongchuan stated firmly. “Given your team's unfortunate incident in the Infusion Room, I understand your feelings. However, I won’t pursue charges for trespassing into the camp.”
Ren Dongchuan warned Sun Xingcai that on his territory, they had to follow his methods.
“Ren Colonel,” Lu Fei Fan interjected provocatively while looking at Sun Xingcai. “If everyone had sufficient reasons to storm into the camp with weapons drawn and kill at will, what safety and trust would this camp have left?”
“You!” Sun Xingcai was taken aback by Lu Fei Fan’s audacity to counter him and instinctively raised his gun again, but fortunately, his team members quickly restrained him.
“I believe your name is Lu Fei Fan?” Ren Dongchuan remarked with a knowing look at Lu Fei Fan.
“Thank you for remembering my name, Commander,” Lu Fei Fan replied politely, though it was clear that Ren Dongchuan detected the sarcasm in his tone.
“To have the audacity to kill in my base shows real guts,” Ren Dongchuan continued with a meaningful glance at Lu Fei Fan. “And your methods are quite decisive; you even drugged our Hound. You certainly have some skills.”
“I’m afraid I don’t quite understand what you mean by that, Ren Dongchuan,” Lu Fei Fan said with a frown, feigning ignorance. It was evident he wasn’t about to fall into any traps.
Ren Dongchuan had no evidence, and mere speculation would not suffice to coerce a confession. If word of this base and his reputation got out, it would spell trouble for him. If the higher-ups found out, his career could be in jeopardy.
Seeing that he couldn't extract any information from Lu Fei Fan, Ren Dongchuan turned his attention to Sun Xingcai.
“Sun Xingcai, what gives you the right to barge into the camp and point a gun at him?”
“Hmph.” Sun Xingcai scoffed. “That murderer was shot twice by me when he jumped out of the window after committing the crime. He must have sustained injuries that he couldn't tend to. If we strip him down to check, it will be obvious.”
“Are you sure?” Ren Dongchuan questioned.
“I’m certain.” Sun Xingcai was confident in his marksmanship, especially since he had clearly seen the man grunt in pain when he landed after being shot.
“Alright.” Ren Dongchuan nodded and then turned to Lu Fei Fan. “Are you willing to prove your innocence?”
“Hahaha, what a baseless accusation! Ren Dongchuan, you can easily frame someone with just a few words. If you were the murderer, how would you prove your innocence?” Lu Fei Fan laughed, appearing quite composed.
Sun Xingcai noticed Lu Fei Fan's demeanor and felt increasingly convinced that he was guilty and unwilling to prove himself, clearly struggling in desperation.
“Those who are innocent have nothing to fear from accusations. If you are wronged, we will ensure justice is served,” Ren Dongchuan promised, striving to appear fair in front of everyone.
As Sun Xingcai stirred things up, many others from the Special Operations Team gathered around to watch. If this matter wasn't handled properly, it could trigger a significant chain reaction, undermining the authority Ren Dongchuan had established at this base. If that happened, new recruits might lose faith in him, especially since this base was currently under urgent circumstances; he couldn't afford to show favoritism.
“Alright then, if I am innocent, what will you do about it, Captain Sun?” Lu Fei Fan countered confidently.
Sun Xingcai looked at Lu Fei Fan and for a brief moment doubted himself. Could it be that he had misjudged? Yet as he thought it over, he found ample reason to believe that this young man was indeed capable of harming his nephew.
“Fine. If it’s not you, I will willingly leave this base immediately and never return,” Sun Xingcai decided to take a gamble.
Ren Dongchuan watched the scene with indifference. Although Sun Xingcai firing a gun in the Infusion Room was a violation of regulations, if he could catch the real culprit, it would count as atonement. However, if an innocent person was wronged... Sun Xingcai's reputation would naturally require his character to vouch for it.
"Fine, I willingly leave the base and will not set foot here again. This is your own decision, Captain Sun," Lu Fei Fan said, nodding and deliberately raising his voice so that the onlookers from the Special Operations Team could hear.
"That's right! Stop dragging your feet! If you keep stalling, I have plenty of ways to make you regret it!" Sun Xingcai gritted his teeth, feeling increasingly impatient with the young man’s antics.
Lu Fei Fan said no more. He stepped forward and stripped off his military shirt.
Instantly, the entire camp erupted in commotion.
Sun Xingcai's features twitched in anger as he glared at Lu Fei Fan, wishing he could bore a hole into the young man’s unscathed body. However, things did not go as he wished; there were no visible bullet wounds on Lu Fei Fan at all. Ren Dongchuan even had the nearby Captain check him personally up close.
The young officer inspected thoroughly, leaning in several centimeters to look twice, yet he found no injuries—not even a pinprick. While there were strong individuals capable of recovering instantly from wounds, they did not believe this young man possessed such power.
Sun Xingcai looked at Lu Fei Fan's bare torso and then down at his lower half, which was clad only in camouflage pants.
"What? Does Captain Sun prefer to shoot at people's lower halves?" Lu Fei Fan mocked, clearly implying that Sun was despicable. He then cooperatively unbuckled his belt, letting his pants drop to reveal only his underwear as he spread his arms wide at Sun Xingcai.
"Still want to look?" Lu Fei Fan smirked while patting his underwear.
The surrounding base buzzed with chatter.
"Enough," Ren Dongchuan interjected, stopping Lu Fei Fan's antics. If Lu Fei Fan shamelessly removed his last piece of clothing, it would severely damage Ren's reputation as the base commander. He certainly did not want to be labeled an accomplice in this farce.
Sun Xingcai glared at Lu Fei Fan through clenched teeth before leading his team away. He could only swallow his anger and frustration.
Ren Dongchuan waved his hand, signaling for them to be allowed to leave. Soon after, the sound of vehicles starting echoed through the base, indicating that Sun Xingcai was keeping his promise and departing with his team.
Before long, an officer approached Ren Dongchuan and reported.
News came from the Infusion Room of the Base Hospital that Sun Xingcai, during a struggle with the assailant, accidentally shot the Cultivation Chamber. Two patients inside were killed by gunfire, and another was severely injured and unconscious.
Even if he chose not to leave, it was clear that he could no longer stay at the base. However, with this incident caused by Sun Xingcai, Ren Dongchuan found himself relieved of many troubles.
The deaths of those in the Blood Wolf Squad no longer concerned him. The thought that all these issues could be neatly resolved with Sun Xingcai's departure lightened Ren Dongchuan's mood considerably.
He walked over to Lu Fei Fan and gave the young man’s shoulder a friendly pat.
“Make sure to rest well.”
With that, he turned and left with his team.
“Thank you for your fairness, Ren Dongchuan,” Lu Fei Fan offered a compliment, providing Ren Dongchuan with a way to save face. This praise made it impossible for Ren Dongchuan to refuse, especially since many present would once again recognize his commitment to justice.
For them, as long as Ren Dongchuan was around, the ironclad rules of the base would effectively safeguard their interests and safety.
This was also what Ren Dongchuan needed because it was the source of his reputation, which significantly impacted his future prospects.
