In an instant, the atmosphere in the corridor became tense and still.
The standoff left everyone too afraid to breathe, even the suffering patients lowered their voices, all eyes fixed on the confrontation unfolding in the hallway.
At that moment, the door at the entrance of the corridor swung open again, and the resolute Ren Dongchuan appeared, flanked by two subordinates.
"What are you trying to do, stage a rebellion?" Ren Dongchuan glared at Lu Fei Fan and Sun Xingcai, his eyes filled with authority.
"Have you all forgotten the base's prohibition against gunfire? If anyone wants to leave this base, just say the word, and I can have them escorted out immediately." Ren Dongchuan's tone was serious; as the highest commander of this base, he held ultimate authority. Anyone who dared to defy the rules would be defying him.
This was an authority that could not be challenged. It was his bottom line.
"Bah." Sun Xingcai was the first to lower his weapon, turning away with a nonchalant air. His two subordinates glared at Lu Fei Fan for a moment before ignoring him.
"Return the serum," Lu Fei Fan called out to Sun Xingcai's retreating figure.
"What serum? This one?" Sun Xingcai waved a vial in front of him. "I just bought this from a doctor for a hundred thousand!" He turned to the nearby doctor and asked, "Isn't that right?"
The doctor kept his head down, too intimidated to meet Lu Fei Fan's gaze; it was clear he was frightened by this group.
"You think you can compete with me? You're still too green," Sun Xingcai chuckled smugly.
"Fine, you'll regret this," Lu Fei Fan replied, putting away his Lie Hound. He knew he couldn't act recklessly in front of Ren Dongchuan; otherwise, it would only bring trouble for Da Biao.
Seeing that both sides had calmed down, Ren Dongchuan coldly turned to leave, leaving two Federal Soldiers behind to maintain order. He ordered that anyone causing trouble would be dealt with ruthlessly.
The operating room door opened, and a weary doctor stepped out. He surveyed the atmosphere and sensed something was off. The nurse who had been robbed of the serum by Sun Xingcai whispered urgently in the doctor's ear. The doctor then approached to check on Da Biao's bedside next to Lu Fei Fan.
Lu Fei Fan glanced at the name tag on the doctor’s uniform; he recognized him as the deputy director of this Battlefield Hospital.
“Transfer him to the Intensive Care Unit for monitoring. Administer Type A serum every two hours, and inform me immediately if there are any changes,” the doctor instructed the nurse, who promptly gathered a few other nurses to wheel Da Biao into the ICU.
Hearing the vice president's orders, Lu Fei Fan felt somewhat reassured. He cast a cold glance at Sun Xingcai, who was busy injecting serum into the young man lying on the bed.
After the serum was administered, the young man was pushed into a treatment room. Lu Fei Fan glanced at the doorplate: Infusion Room.
He silently noted it down and then turned to check on Da Biao in the ICU. The nurse was attending to him, which put Lu Fei Fan's mind at ease. He then exited Battlefield Hospital.
Inside the base, it seemed that the defenders were exceptionally busy. They were reinforcing various fortifications, and he spotted Ren Dongchuan inspecting every corner, specifically enhancing defenses in weak areas and increasing manpower.
Lu Fei Fan deliberately surveyed the route from the hospital to the temporary camp and the defensive positions, committing everything to memory as he strolled casually through the base.
The defensive installations of the base appeared ready for battle. This made Lu Fei Fan reflect on the chaotic scene he had witnessed upon entering the base—the ground littered with monster corpses, burning vehicles, and numerous craters.
It all indicated that the base had experienced a sudden upheaval. Currently, it was in a state of readiness for combat. No one could explain this situation to Lu Fei Fan; it was his first time on Fallen Zone Island. Such islands often entered a state of alert due to special circumstances, which should be considered normal.
Lu Fei Fan did not deliberately inquire about anything. He simply requested a resting barrack from the logistics officer. In the barrack, he took a hot shower, washing away his fatigue under the warm water.
Despite being in a state of combat readiness, supplies of hot water, ammunition, and food within the base remained normal. Lu Fei Fan enjoyed a hearty meal in the cafeteria before spending several hours at the hospital caring for Da Biao. After two injections of serum from the nurse, Da Biao's complexion showed some improvement, leading Lu Fei Fan to believe that Da Biao would pull through.
However, Sun Xingcai's earlier tone continued to trouble him internally. Back in his resting barrack, he began practicing Fu Mai Xi Shu. The Pulse Energy within his blood flowed like a clear stream as he mobilized it, coursing through and pushing forward like rivers merging into an ocean, penetrating through the Meridians on the continent.
Just as water flows naturally into place, Lu Fei Fan’s Pulse Breathing Technique had been cultivated nearly ten thousand cycles by now. Finally activating Pulse Energy and channeling it into a pool of water within that chaotic void, dozens of stars suddenly lit up in an instant as a new sun rose slowly. There, two new suns shone in harmony.
Sitting on his bed, Lu Fei Fan opened his eyes and gently moved his limbs. The cracking sounds of his joints surprised him—Fu Mai Xi Shu had achieved another breakthrough.
Lu Fei Fan practiced his combat techniques until deep into the night. When it reached three o'clock, he quietly slipped out. Not long after, in a corner, he knocked out a stationed soldier and quickly changed into that soldier's uniform. Wearing a mask and military helmet, he navigated through the buildings under cover of darkness along routes he had previously scouted without difficulty.
The Battlefield Hospital was much quieter in the early morning; many patients had fallen asleep after a long day. The busy nurses finished administering IVs and rested at the Nurse Station when one nurse followed a doctor carrying medication out from the Infusion Room.
The doctor sighed as the delivery personnel brought the late-night meal to the hospital. He called the nurses into the office to take turns eating.
Unbeknownst to them, a shadow darted into the Infusion Room. The dim green light flickered ominously, illuminating several Cultivation Tanks connected by various tubes. This Battlefield Hospital's Infusion Room was not large, containing only over twenty glass Cultivation Chambers. However, due to an incident earlier that day, two-thirds of the Glass Slots were now filled.
Inside the glass Cultivation Tanks were patients sensitive to light. The shadow quietly lowered itself, searching for a target. Suddenly, a young man in one of the Cultivation Tanks caught its attention. The shadow approached and peered into the Glass Slot containing the young man.
The young man was sucking on an Oxygen Tube, bubbles of oxygen occasionally escaping his lips. Behind him were two rows of neat dental impressions, but the Green Liquid surrounding him stabilized his injuries and aided his recovery. Just then, as if awakened from a nightmare, he suddenly opened his eyes wide and saw a man in a hooded cloak resembling death itself staring coldly at him, holding a recently removed Air Tube.
The young man began to struggle violently, his hands pounding against the Glass Slot. The respirator was dislodged from his mouth, and he clutched his throat, gasping for air as the Green Liquid surged into his mouth. He kicked and pounded against the Glass Slot, desperate to escape or break free from it. Yet, its hardness exceeded his expectations, or perhaps he simply lacked the strength.
The more he struggled inside the Glass Slot, the faster he consumed oxygen. In the end, he managed to break free but stared wide-eyed at the man outside. He opened his mouth in an attempt to breathe, but liquid rushed into his body uncontrollably, stripping away all hope. Soon, his body became stiff and convulsed until he lay motionless; the entire ordeal lasted less than five minutes.
At that moment, a piercing alarm blared through the Infusion Room.
In the hospital corridor, Sun Xingcai yawned and was about to step out for a smoke when the sudden alarm from the Battlefield Hospital jolted him awake. He rushed toward the Infusion Room and forcefully slammed open its door.
Before he could draw his weapon, a sharp glint sliced across his neck.
He instinctively clenched his fists and swung downwards as an opponent kicked him squarely in the abdomen. He rolled away and quickly noticed that all the tubes connected to the Cultivation Glass Slots had been removed!
“Ah!” he shouted in anger and hastily drew his Energy Pistol, firing at the black-clad assailant.
The figure in Federal Military Uniform dodged left and right as bullets ricocheted off other Glass Slots. Several were punctured instantly, green liquid gushing out.
The Black Shadow dashed toward a window and crashed through it with a loud crash!
Sun Xingcai charged after him, firing wildly with his gun. As the figure landed and rolled away smoothly, Sun Xingcai managed to hit him with a shot just as he half-crouched down. The shadow let out a muffled grunt before swiftly weaving through the building's left and right corners.
Sun Xingcai continuously fired his gun towards the distance, but that familiar figure vanished into the buildings of the base.
Behind him, in the Infusion Room, his subordinates lamented as a Federal Soldier burst through the Infusion Room doors, revealing a scene of chaos.
“Ah!” Sun Xingcai roared in desperation while standing by the bed. He turned to see the young man in the glass slot wide-eyed and frozen in place.
His fists clenched tightly, making a cracking sound. His teammates looked equally helpless; they never expected someone would dare to seek revenge on them at night.
The only person who could be so bold was undoubtedly that young man from the Fei Hu Battle Team, who immediately came to their minds as the most suspicious target.
Without a word, Sun Xingcai and his team swiftly left the Infusion Room.
Outside, the base was in disarray. The alarm had been sounded, and soldiers poured out of the Camp. Ren Dongchuan stood by his office window, and soon after, a Lieutenant Colonel knocked and entered, briefing Ren Dongchuan on the situation.
After hearing the report, Ren Dongchuan immediately turned and left with the Lieutenant Colonel. It seemed that the seriousness of the incident required his immediate intervention to quell any potential unrest in the base.
For some, this night would undoubtedly be an unforgettable sleepless one.
