“Could it be a secret mission?” Cai Bi suddenly interjected from the side.
Da Fu Ge exchanged glances with the horse team, contemplating the possibility. What kind of clandestine operation could be taking place on this vast island?
“A team without a General executing a secret mission?” Fu Qinqin murmured.
The horse team pondered for a moment, then folded up the map and said, “We need to leave here quickly. The gunshots we heard earlier are likely to attract some unwanted guests.”
Everyone quickly got into the vehicles. Within ten minutes, the two escape vehicles returned to their temporary camp, packing up their belongings and getting on board.
Lu Fei Fan glanced at the time; it was just past four in the morning, with nearly two hours until dawn. However, the Special Operations Team chose to move forward in the darkness. Unlike the reckless approach of the Sword Serpent Squad earlier, both vehicles opted to drive without headlights, yet they navigated steadily through the night, as the drivers were equipped with infrared night vision goggles.
Lu Fei Fan couldn’t help but admire the captain’s thorough preparations. After all, in the perilous wilderness against harsh nature and mutated beasts, every bit of preparation offered an extra layer of safety.
In the darkness, any rugged or complex terrain was visible through the night vision goggles. Even a pack of wolves trailing them hundreds of meters away could be clearly seen.
The Fei Hu Battle Team was equipped with four sets of night vision goggles. In each vehicle, besides the driver wearing a pair, another team member was assigned to keep watch. Of course, the captain also had a Night Vision Telescope.
Sure enough, they hadn’t driven far when the wolves that had previously attacked the Sword Serpent Squad returned. This time, however, their numbers were overwhelming and darkened the landscape.
“These creatures are like bloodthirsty locusts; as long as they can smell blood and flesh, they will swarm in. Their sheer numbers can easily devour you. This is both their strength as a pack and a survival strategy against other predators in this harsh environment,” Da Biao said as he removed his night vision goggles and handed them to Lu Fei Fan.
Lu Fei Fan took them and looked through. In the green-tinted viewfinder, he could see those dense packs of wolves lingering around their previous campsite, growling and refusing to disperse. A few particularly keen ones even began to chase after the direction of their departing vehicles.
Fu Qinqin raised her Sniper Rifle and aimed backward, but Ma Tui reached out to lower her weapon. “Don’t pay them any mind; once it gets light out, they’ll leave on their own.”
Fu Qinqin lowered her rifle and signaled to the vehicle ahead not to worry about the wolves trailing behind. Such low-level predators posed no threat unless they were in large numbers.
Light gradually tore through the veil of night, unknowingly occupying every corner of the world and announcing its return with a fierce flourish.
The vehicle had been traveling for nearly two hours, and the people and horses aboard were weary. The caravan made an impromptu stop in a stretch of barren land dotted with a few giant cacti to rest for two hours before continuing their journey.
In the Gobi Desert, the azure sky stretched like a vast, boundless gem embedded above their heads. This was one of Lu Fei Fan's favorite beautiful sights; he loved expansive places like deserts and oceans that allowed for freedom without any constraints.
Fu Qinqin, who was quite familiar with Cai Bi, carried a water bucket towards a giant cactus that had opened a flower. She inserted a steel pipe into the cactus.
After a while, green liquid began to drip slowly from the pipe into the bucket.
“Learn from this,” Da Fu Ge said, patting Lu Fei Fan on the shoulder as he patiently explained. “These cacti not only provide us with water; when food is scarce in the desert, they can also serve as nourishment. So you must learn to respect them. After all, every species struggles to survive under the laws of nature.”
Lu Fei Fan took note of this. Although these giant cacti differed somewhat from his previous understanding, at least they could provide water and food, which made them memorable to him.
This time, Da Fu Ge took watch while the others either slept in the vehicle or basked in the morning sunlight for a full three hours. When the team began preparing lunch, Lu Fei Fan was surprised to see that the one-liter bucket was already half full of green liquid.
After collecting water, Cai Bi humorously offered a splash of what he called ‘Immortal Urine’ back to the cactus as a form of reciprocity.
However, Fu Qinqin kicked him hard enough that he ended up hugging the cactus. Cai Bi barely had time to pull up his pants before he howled like a wolf, frantically hopping around trying to pull out thorns while tears streamed down his face. The others erupted in laughter.
Eventually, Da Biao could no longer bear it and handed Cai Bi a bottle of ointment, shaking his head. Fu Qinqin had indeed gone too far this time; after all, they still had a mission ahead. Such antics could undermine their combat effectiveness. Although the giant cactus was not poisonous, it would still affect Cai Bi's journey ahead.
Fortunately, Cai Bi was not too badly injured; aside from several thorns lodged in non-vital areas, he was mostly fine. Thinking of his future offspring, he pulled out four or five types of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications from his pack and swallowed them without hesitation. He wouldn’t hesitate to take even poison if it meant securing happiness for his later years.
After their meal, the team organized their gear and prepared to head towards their designated K Zone location just a few kilometers away. There lay a den of Thunderfang Wolves marked by their captain on the map.
Thus, before setting out, everyone was fully armed, clutching their hot weapons as if facing an imminent threat.
The vehicle traveled for about ten minutes before reaching the designated area. Here, bizarre wind-eroded hills were scattered everywhere, and not far off lay a stretch of the Gobi mountain range. The Gobi Desert was gradually coming alive; withered yellow and greenish-yellow plants stretched towards it at the foot of the mountains.
“It should be over there,” one member of the caravan confirmed while pointing towards a spot near the mountains in the Gobi Desert Shangu area. He then glanced at the map again and checked his compass on his communication watch.
The vehicle moved cautiously, inching forward and backward. Everyone sat with their weapons at the ready, fully alert to their surroundings. Even the cavalry had put down their binoculars, frowning as they sensed the atmosphere around them.
“It’s too quiet. This doesn’t feel right; not even a bird in sight,” Jiu Ye said, clutching a Heavy Energy Machine Gun as he scanned the area.
The convoy arrived at Shangu amidst the eerie silence. The cavalry made an impromptu decision to stop on the other side of the mountain. He took Jia Jia with him as they climbed a small hill to observe the situation at Shangu.
After a while, the short-legged Jia Jia returned.
“Captain, Fei Fan and Cai Bi are staying behind. The rest of us are ready to follow,” she reported, casting a glance at Lu Fei Fan.
Lu Fei Fan complied without hesitation; there was nothing amiss about it.
Da Biao and Da Fu Ge patted Lu Fei Fan on the shoulder in a gesture of comfort. After all, it was disappointing for a newcomer to be left out of their first battle; perhaps they had experienced similar situations before.
“If things go south, remember to call for reinforcements. Heh heh,” Jiu Ye chuckled as he scratched his head, then checked his energy Machine Gun. He opened an ammo box and wrapped the linked rounds around his sturdy frame.
“Alright, stay sharp,” Lu Fei Fan said, giving the Iron Tower-like man a pat.
Then everyone grabbed their combat gear and rushed toward the hill where the captain was stationed.
Cai Bi remained in another vehicle, wearing sunglasses, lying back in his seat with his hands behind his head, enjoying a brief nap.
Lu Fei Fan shook his head, holding You She as he kept watch over their surroundings from the driver’s seat. He glanced through the scope at the situation on the hill. The cavalry signaled to their team members before splitting into two groups to stealthily approach Shangu.
For some reason, Lu Fei Fan felt inexplicably tense, sensing an underlying unease.
Could there be danger?
Yet, aside from his worries, he couldn’t rush in to join the captain and the others. Sitting in the front seat, he picked up a bullet and tossed it at Cai Bi across from him.
"Stay alert. If anything seems off, we’ll drive in and get them," Lu Fei Fan said, securing his gun behind him as he settled into the driver's seat.
Cai Bi, somewhat reluctant, raised a finger at Lu Fei Fan but ultimately complied, taking up a watchful position in the passenger seat. However, it wasn’t long before he started dozing off.
Lu Fei Fan shook his head in resignation. In the distance, the peaks of Shangu appeared to be shrouded in clouds, with wisps of vapor drifting by.
Suddenly, there were three loud explosions—boom, boom, boom!
Cai Bi jolted awake, startled by the tremors that shook the ground beneath them.
Almost immediately after, gunfire erupted from Shangu. After a while, everyone from the Fei Hu Battle Team burst out, with a horse carrying someone on its back!
Lu Fei Fan’s heart sank as he recognized the figure—it was Da Biao!
Behind them, Shangu was engulfed in chaos; dust and smoke billowed as a horde of something surged forward.
This is bad!
It looked like it was the Arrow Armadillos!
Jiu Ye wielded a heavy energy machine gun, firing wildly from behind. However, there were too many Arrow Armadillos, their tough hides absorbing the onslaught without slowing their relentless pursuit. Countless Arrow Spikes rained down from the thick smoke, embedding themselves around the team members.
Jiu Ye roared in frustration as the machine gun spat flames into the herd of boars, splattering blood and flesh everywhere but only managing to take down a few.
Meanwhile, the captain fired his Silver Single-Shot Rifle with crisp precision; each shot rang out cleanly and accurately, taking down one beast with each pull of the trigger!
"Retreat!" Da Fu Ge shouted, the Specialized Energy Revolver in his hand firing off shots.
Jia Jia walked while tossing various Landmines from her backpack behind her.
Boom! Boom—
The explosions erupted like waves, instantly engulfing the terrifying herd of hundreds of Boars.
The stampeding Herd of Boars looked quite fearsome, shaking the ground and raising clouds of dust in a thunderous roar.
Lu Fei Fan pressed the accelerator without hesitation, moving the vehicle forward. Cai Bi, who was slightly delayed, quickly caught up. Lu Fei Fan pulled out his large-caliber Lie Hound revolver. As the car hit a stone and jolted, he heard a thud from the passenger seat. Glancing over, he was surprised to see a box of Hand Grenades sitting in the empty space beside him!
He quickly dragged the box over!
The two vehicles charged toward the retreating team members. When they were ten meters away, Lu Fei Fan slammed on the brakes, skillfully maneuvering the steering wheel to drift and spin the car around, coming to a steady stop.
