After a while.
When Lu Fei Fan's ferry safely arrived in the waters of Bayflow Island, it seemed that a rain had just passed. The slowly dissipating gray-white clouds and the fresh air after the rain were the best proof of this.
On the deck of the ferry, Lu Fei Fan gazed into the distance, where the misty rain lingered. The surface of the harbor shimmered like neon lights, captivating his attention.
Bayflow Island was larger than Turtle Island, and its port capacity was quite impressive. The bustling harbor was filled with masts and ships, creating a picturesque scene. Further back, rows of orderly white houses rose up in the city behind the port. Even farther away stood towering buildings, forming the vibrant urban area of this island.
As Lu Fei Fan watched the ferry glide into the harbor, he noticed several military ships docked in the adjacent military waters. In the twilight, they were lined up neatly at the docks: clusters of cruisers, oil tankers, and supply ships, along with groups of gray destroyers and reconnaissance boats. There were even one or two rare black submarines resembling sea beasts.
Once the ferry docked and stabilized, Lu Fei Fan eagerly shouldered his backpack and jumped off the swaying vessel. After surveying his surroundings, he noticed that a row of vehicles was parked along the road outside the dock.
It was then that Lu Fei Fan realized two other ferries had also arrived simultaneously, disembarking passengers who carried similarly bulging backpacks and gear. These individuals moved with purpose and had sharp gazes; they did not appear to be ordinary people.
It seemed that Bayflow Island was a gathering place for Fusers and Mercenaries.
As Lu Fei Fan approached the entrance with his Military Backpack, he noticed that there was no one there to greet him.
“Bang!”
The sound of a gunshot startled many on the dock, prompting several people to draw their weapons, including the guards on duty who turned to look in that direction.
“Hahaha, it’s just a Mallard! No need to buy snacks!” A Bald Man laughed heartily in front of a truck at the dock. Beside him, a young man named A Hoo let out a strange cry before jumping into the water to retrieve the duck that had just been shot.
Lu Fei Fan paused in his tracks. Although he was several dozen meters away, he could clearly see that lone Mallard struggling helplessly for a moment before finally sinking onto the water's surface.
This Mallard was also a migratory bird; it wouldn’t normally be found here during other seasons. Little did it know that after flying thousands of miles and overcoming hunger and harsh conditions alongside its kind, it had migrated here only to fall victim to human gunfire before it could even catch its breath.
These migratory birds travel between high and low altitudes according to seasonal changes—a phenomenon known as "vertical migration." Of course, some species engage in short-distance migrations that are entirely irregular, merely wandering in response to changes in food availability.
Sometimes, aren't humans the same? Wherever it is suitable for survival, they migrate there.
Lu Fei Fan felt like he was just a floating leaf in this great natural migration, but the greed inherent in human nature often deprived other creatures of their right to exist.
"What a bunch of brainless fools!"
A voice next to Lu Fei Fan cursed, and he noticed a figure beside him—a woman dressed in a short-sleeved jacket with short, androgynous hair.
Her refreshing and stylish appearance was complemented by a face that bore slightly deep features, exuding a neutral charm. The light-colored jacket highlighted her sun-kissed skin, while military-style pants completed her look. Her face had the delicacy of femininity paired with the clear lines typical of masculinity. Below her straight nose was a smirk that hinted at amusement, and her slightly squinted eyes held amber pupils, radiating a lazy yet vigilant expression, reminiscent of a leopard. She was tall and slender, especially her long legs; if she had swapped her oversized military boots and cargo pants for high heels and a long skirt, those legs would have been utterly irresistible.
As Lu Fei Fan pondered the meaning behind the androgynous woman's words, a squad of fully armed soldiers rushed over from the dock, swiftly disarming the mercenaries from earlier. Two of them, still drunk, attempted to resist but were promptly kicked away by their commanding officer.
The other mercenaries or members of the Special Operations Team shook their heads in disdain at these foolish individuals who dared to open fire at the dock. They showed no intention of helping and simply got into their vehicles to leave.
"Hey, stop staring and get in the car," the androgynous woman called out from a parked convertible SUV behind them.
"Huh? Oh." Lu Fei Fan snapped out of his thoughts and hurried over, tossing his military backpack into the back seat before climbing in.
The woman started the vehicle, driving aggressively out of the dock. Her reckless maneuvers forced several drivers of blocked cars to express their strong dissatisfaction.
However, she remained unfazed as she skillfully navigated through the port's maze-like alleys. Lu Fei Fan was curious why she wasn't taking the main road but didn't ask; given the number of vehicles earlier, it was likely that the main road was congested.
After maneuvering through the complicated Port City streets, she emerged onto a main road and headed toward the other side of the city.
"This is your first time here; we need to go to the Battle Team Headquarters for your identity registration."
With that, she slammed on the brakes, bringing the car to a stop in front of an unremarkable building that bore the sign: Overseas Registration Center.
Lu Fei Fan stepped out of the car without hesitation and approached the front desk. After registering with his identification, the staff member quickly stamped his documents, completing the process in less than a minute, showcasing impressive efficiency.
Outside, the girl seemed to have left the engine running. Before Lu Fei Fan could settle into his seat, the car shot off with a sudden burst of speed.
"Are you... from the cavalry?" Lu Fei Fan finally asked, having wanted to clarify this all along. Was he mistaken for someone else by this rough woman?
"And you?" The woman shot him a glance, her impatience evident as she pressed down on the accelerator, causing the car to speed away.
After half an hour of driving, they arrived at the other side of the city. This area was also a port, but unlike the bustling docks of Bayflow Island, it felt quiet and serene, with only a few military ships and transport vessels docked.
The car rolled along the embankment and came to a stop in front of a row of warehouses.
The woman driving seemed displeased. She jumped out of the car and headed toward the warehouse without any intention of showing Lu Fei Fan the way.
"Hey, look who’s back! Our Fu Po and Fu Ge!" A tall, slender young man emerged from the entrance, his pale face looking slightly puffy.
"If you keep talking nonsense, next time when you need to pee..." Fu Po made a slicing gesture with her hand, silencing him before humming a tune as she walked inside.
The young man shrugged and turned around, spotting Lu Fei Fan who was carrying a military backpack.
"Hello, welcome! I'm A Biao; everyone calls me Da Biao." The young man greeted Lu Fei Fan warmly.
"I'm Lu Fei Fan," he replied, shaking Da Biao's hand.
"Nice name," Da Biao said politely. "Come on in; the captain and the others are inside."
Lu Fei Fan took the lead and entered the warehouse.
As soon as he stepped inside, he realized that the warehouse was surprisingly spacious, divided into two levels. Each level had designated areas: the first floor featured a maintenance area, a shower area, a bar, a gym, and a weapons storage area. The second floor was likely designated for resting.
Fu Po was slumped over the bar, sipping on a drink of unknown origin. Behind the bar stood a muscular man resembling an Iron Tower, mixing cocktails.
"This is Brother Jiu. Besides being responsible for supplying us with ammunition on the battlefield, he is also the firepower support for our Special Operations Team. He's a reliable teammate; if it weren't for his timely support on several occasions, I probably wouldn't be standing here to introduce him to you," Da Biao said, leaning in closer to Lu Fei Fan and whispering, "By the way, his drinks are terrible!"
"Da Biao, could you repeat that?" Fu Po suddenly slammed her glass down on the table with a loud crash, glaring at him with irritation.
"Hehe, Qin Qin, take it easy. Da Biao isn't wrong. The drinks I make are completely random; maybe only we think they're decent," Brother Jiu said as he pushed another freshly mixed drink toward the table. "Here you go, buddy. This one's for you. Want to give it a try?"
Lu Fei Fan glanced at Da Biao, who subtly shook his head in disapproval, clearly suggesting that Lu Fei Fan should avoid drinking it.
However, Fu Po's fierce gaze was fixed on Lu Fei Fan. It seemed that if he refused, this tough woman would pounce on him like a leopard and take a bite out of him.
Brother Jiu leaned over the bar with a friendly smile that seemed harmless.
At that moment, a figure broke through the scene. Ma Tui walked over from the gym after finishing his workout and spotted Lu Fei Fan.
"You made it," he said while sitting at the bar and wiping sweat off his forehead. "I'm dying of thirst."
Without hesitation, he grabbed the new drink from the bar and gulped it down.
Halfway through, he suddenly spat it out with a loud "pfft!"
“Cough, cough! Lao Jiu, what kind of expired injury wine did you give me?” He hurriedly covered his mouth and rushed to the restroom.
At the bar, Lao Jiu picked up the empty glass and dipped his finger into the remaining liquid to taste it.
“It seems I shouldn’t have added too much Lump Wine…” he muttered, then turned back to busy himself at the counter.
Fu Po sat back down at the bar, drinking again, seemingly preferring not to see Lu Fei Fan and Da Biao, two lively individuals.
Da Biao shrugged, too lazy to pay attention to that tomboy, and continued to familiarize himself with the warehouse alongside Lu Fei Fan.
“Did you see that guy over there in the gym area hitting the Human Sandbag? His name is Jia Xing, but we all like to call him Jia Jia. You should watch out for his punches; his boxing skills are quite impressive. He doesn’t talk much and prefers to let his fists do the talking.”
“And over in the maintenance area, there’s that guy wearing glasses, with black hair mixed with a lot of white. He’s thin and focused on repairing firearms. His name is Da Fu Ge; he’s our vice Captain. He’s like a living map and a mechanical repairman. If you have any issues with your equipment in the future, you can go to him.”
“Also, there’s a lecherous guy about your age sleeping upstairs. His name is Cai Bi; you should keep your distance from him. His biggest daily routine is…” Da Biao was still going on.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed down the stairs.
“Oh, Qin Qin! My beloved Qin Qin! I’ve missed you so much in just one hour!” A figure dashed toward Fu Po, who was sitting at the bar with her back turned to everyone, like a perverted fiend.
However, just as he reached out to embrace Fu Po, he froze in place because a black handgun was pressed against his groin.
“If your hand dares to touch me, I’ll blow your little eggs off!” Fu Qinqin said bluntly.
“Uh, cough, well, since I already hugged you this morning, I’ll save it for tomorrow…” The young man named Cai Bi chose to be wise and preserve his eggs rather than continue being a rogue.
Yet that gun remained firmly in place; he had no choice but to seek help from the captain who had just emerged from the restroom.
“Captain.”
“Alright, alright, Qin Qin, just let him go,” the cavalry leader waved his hand, acting as a peacemaker. “You know the rule against harming each other in the team.”
Fu Qinqin lowered her gun and quickly fired two shots at Hua Ban, startling Cai Bi, who instinctively protected his groin.
Ding.
Crash!
A lampshade fell down and hit Cai Bi.
The impact left him with a bruised face, and it seemed he was bleeding.
“Ow, my beautiful nose!” he exclaimed, hurriedly covering his bleeding nose as he went to bandage it himself.
Fu Qinqin casually placed her gun back on the table and continued to sit there drinking with an air of nonchalance.
“Cai Bi may be reckless, but he’s our team’s doctor,” Da Biao shrugged. He then patted Lu Fei Fan on the shoulder and said, “That’s about it for introductions. Most of us from the Fei Hu Battle Team are here. There are empty rooms upstairs; if you’re tired, you can go rest for a bit. We’ll head out in a while.”
