As the morning light dispelled the darkness, people began to embark on their respective journeys, whether they desired to walk them or not, they had to move forward.
Navigating this rugged world itself is a challenging journey. We stumble and rise amidst the hardships, continuously reborn through our struggles. Even when sorrow envelops us and pain scatters around like fallen leaves, we march forward without hesitation, never pausing.
For some, the Practical Assessment marks an end, but upon returning home, a new life and struggle await—an unpredictable chapter of life.
The reference personnel at Monster Base were among the last group boarding the returning Ferry. Lu Fei Fan, along with A Teng and Da Li, was just a small part of this vast flow.
Lu Fei Fan thought about how once he received his assessment title, he would be able to join the Special Operations Team in the sea to earn money. For him, the life he aspired to might just be beginning.
Life is like that; you can never predict whether what lies ahead is joy or sorrow, whether it will be smooth sailing or a tempest.
Just as Lu Fei Fan was heading home, he did not expect that something unexpected had occurred at home.
As usual, after delivering meals to his mother at the hospital, Hua Jun Tang took the time to carefully clean his bedridden father’s body. Thanks to the attentive care from both mother and son, his father had not developed any bedsores despite being turned several times and cleaned thoroughly.
In contrast, several patients in the adjacent ward suffered from severe bedsores due to inadequate care from their families. However, this Tertiary Hospital was indeed much better than the one back on Turtle Island. The doctors and nurses were very responsible, making rounds multiple times a day.
Nonetheless, routine expenses such as blood tests, blood pressure measurements, and temperature checks were naturally several thousand more than those at home. Fortunately, Hua Jun Tang felt relieved that he was not like some patients in other wards whose families could no longer afford treatment and had to be sent home by doctors to await their fate. Sometimes, in the face of aging and illness, life can feel so fragile.
When his father fell ill, his elder brother silently took on the burden of supporting the family. Thankfully, his brother had left enough money for their mother to sustain herself for quite some time. At least for now, they didn’t have to worry about medical expenses; however, with no signs of improvement, Hua Jun Tang felt a twinge of anxiety.
Soon it was time for work. He shook off these negative thoughts from his mind; he needed to grow up seriously and share the pressure with his elder brother. He quickly arrived at the delivery station, adjusting his mindset to focus on work.
“Hua Jun Tang is here?” Several colleagues in delivery uniforms greeted him enthusiastically.
“Yeah! I’ll try to dispatch more today,” Hua Jun Tang replied.
"Take it easy. Don't overexert yourself. You still have to take care of your parents," Brother Liu kindly reminded as he stepped out of the office.
"Don't worry, Brother Liu. I won't overload myself with work; I know my limits," Hua Jun Tang nodded, feeling a sense of appreciation for this elder who usually looked out for him.
"That's good to hear. I'm just worried you'll overthink things and wear yourself out," Brother Liu replied, giving him a reassuring nod before patting him on the shoulder. "Oh, by the way, where's your brother?"
"My brother?" Hua Jun Tang paused for a moment. "Oh, he went to take that Unified Awakeners Examination."
"What? The Unified Awakeners Examination?" Brother Liu seemed taken aback, pondering something.
"Wait, Hua Jun Tang, your brother is actually a Fuser?" One of the coworkers nearby exclaimed in surprise.
"Haha, no, he just went to take the exam; I don't even know if he'll pass," Hua Jun Tang said, feeling a bit embarrassed. He was hesitant to bring it up in front of his colleagues in case his older brother didn't succeed—he didn't want anyone thinking he was bragging.
"He'll definitely succeed," a colleague patted him on the shoulder in encouragement. "Then you'll have an impressive older brother looking out for you. Hehe."
"Yeah, unlike us, who have no connections and can only suffer through life delivering packages. If I had a Fuser brother or sister, I could get a loan from the Federal Bank and start a business or something," a tall guy among the employees complained.
"What's wrong? Is this job not good enough for you?" Brother Liu feigned anger at the tall guy's remark.
"No, no, no, Brother Liu! That's not what I meant! What I meant is that the Free Federation offers so many more benefits to Empowered Individuals than we ordinary folks without any special abilities," the tall guy quickly clarified.
Others chimed in immediately: "Exactly! I know that once a Fuser joins a national institution in the Free Federation, they receive state subsidies like a house of their choice in any city or island, plus an annual salary of a million. The government provides free healthcare and retirement insurance as well. Even if they make mistakes, regular police and military can't just arrest or harm them; only special personnel can deal with them. They get all the best privileges from the Free Federation."
"So many benefits?" Hua Jun Tang was taken aback as well; he hadn't really looked into this matter before. It turned out that becoming a Fuser in the Free Federation came with so many advantages. It seemed he needed to learn more about it.
“Of course, that's not all. I heard that as a Fuser, you can also join the Special Operations Team, hunting or completing missions where you only need to pay a small tax on the rewards, most of which you keep for yourself. A friend of mine has a cousin who is a Fuser and has been out at sea with the Special Operations Team for a few years now, and he's casually made tens of millions,” an experienced colleague animatedly shared.
Hua Jun Tang couldn't help but be taken aback. His older brother had landed such an impressive job? That was incredible! The more he thought about it, the more he believed that his brother might actually be able to afford that miraculous medicine, the Jinwu Holy Blood Pill. If that happened, there would be hope for their father's recovery.
“Alright, alright, enough with the chatter. If you want to boast, do it after work tonight. We need to get going with the deliveries; otherwise, we won't meet tonight's order volume,” Lao Liu waved his hand, interrupting the group of young subordinates who loved to gather and brag. Ever since he became the supervisor of this department, he had been worried about these youngsters.
However, he considered himself to be quite good to his subordinates, which earned him their respect.
“Lao Liu, come in,” called the manager from the office.
Lao Liu walked in, and the manager handed him a document with a serious expression. “This order is particularly important. Find two reliable people to deliver it; don’t mess it up. They’ve insured the whole shipment.”
“Understood.” Lao Liu took the order and stepped out, glancing at it: “Emerald District, Unit 5, 55.”
His eyelids twitched twice. The Emerald District was an affluent residential area, and he personally didn’t like delivering packages there because the security always insisted on checking his shipments. It made everything chaotic and added to his workload.
However, the security in that area was indeed top-notch; he had heard that they patrolled with real firearms, all approved by the Free Federation. In these times, wealthy people lived in safer neighborhoods while the poor had to settle for areas with lower security. If he were rich, he would also move to such a well-secured area; even if monsters suddenly attacked the city, those security personnel would ensure that residents could evacuate safely. He had even heard that higher-end districts had Empowered Individuals guarding them—this was a guarantee of safety.
After leaving the office, Lao Liu glanced at the employees busy loading goods onto the delivery vehicle and waved over Hua Jun Tang and another diligent subordinate.
“Hua Jun Tang, come here. You and Da Wen are taking this order. It’s urgent.” He handed over the document without further ado.
Hua Jun Tang looked at the order and then called over Da Wen, who was a solid and hardworking older brother figure, a few years his senior.
“Brother Wen, Lao Liu wants us to deliver this order together.” Hua Jun Tang showed him the document.
Da Wen wiped the sweat from his forehead with the sleeve of his shirt and glanced at the list through his gloves, muttering, "This is for the Emerald District. Usually, A Hai handles these deliveries, but he's on leave because his wife just gave birth."
"Well, since Brother Liu asked us to deliver it, let's just take it over," Hua Jun Tang said, lifting the order. It turned out to be a large wooden box nearly two meters long and one meter wide.
"My goodness, such a big package! No wonder they need two people to deliver it. Alright, I'll go get the company truck so we can load this up together," Da Wen said before quickly turning to find the vehicle.
After much effort, the two managed to lift the large wooden box onto the truck and set off for the Emerald District.
Upon arriving at the district entrance, Hua Jun Tang was startled by the security measures in place. Several armed guards stood at the entrance, and a dog was brought in to check for any prohibited items in their vehicle. A scanner was used to inspect the underside of the truck, and after the head guard checked everything twice and made a phone call to confirm the order, they were finally allowed to pass.
Da Wen sighed at the cumbersome security process but was relieved that there were no major issues.
Once they found Unit 5, Hua Jun Tang and Da Wen prepared to carry the box inside. There was supposed to be an elevator in the building, but it was temporarily out of service. Unfortunately, they had to call the recipient, who insisted that they deliver it right to the door for inspection.
So, Hua Jun Tang and Da Wen had no choice but to carry the heavy wooden box up the stairs. As they ascended, Hua Jun Tang accidentally stepped on a banana peel and lost his grip on the box. It crashed loudly onto the floor, but Da Wen quickly caught it before it could slide down the stairs.
Hua Jun Tang hurriedly stabilized the box, and they both breathed a sigh of relief. When they finally reached the fifth floor, they checked to see if there were any damages; fortunately, everything looked fine.
After much effort in getting the wooden box to Room 55, they rang the doorbell. The door opened to reveal a young man in his twenties with a sullen expression, dressed in a white suit and impeccably groomed.
"You're so slow! You dare claim to be the fastest delivery service in this area? That's a bad review," he complained as he opened the door wider.
"Sorry about that; there was traffic on the way here, and since the elevator is broken, we had to take the stairs," Da Wen explained from behind.
The two prepared to carry the box inside when suddenly, the young man called out to them.
“Wait, you need to take off your shoes before coming in.” The young man looked at Da Wen and Hua Jun Tang's shoes with some disgust.
The two had no choice but to take off their shoes and prepare to carry the box inside. However, the young man continued to look at their feet with displeasure, as both of them were wearing socks with holes. In their line of work, it was common for socks to wear out quickly; they only discarded a pair when it was completely beyond repair. Of course, there was also a lingering odor of sweat, which made the young man even more uncomfortable and repulsed.
Hua Jun Tang and Da Wen followed him as they carried the box through a spacious hall that spanned nearly a hundred square meters. The hall was filled with high-end vintage-style furniture. They placed the box down in a large room, and Hua Jun Tang wiped his sweat in relief before handing a list to the young man, pointing at the blank signature line.
“Could you please sign here?”
“Sign?” The young man snorted coldly and chose to ignore them. Instead, he called for a crowbar to open the wooden box and inspect the contents. Hua Jun Tang and Da Wen thought nothing of it, but when the young man opened the box, both of them were instantly stunned.
The young man’s expression turned icy as he threw down the tool, looking at Hua Jun Tang and Da Wen as if he were about to explode.
“What… how could this happen…” Da Wen stammered, struggling to believe what he was seeing.
Hua Jun Tang stared blankly at the contents of the box, his mind in chaos with only one thought racing through it.
It’s over; we’re in big trouble…
