After a night of sailing, the Ferry had completely escaped the storm zone.
Surprisingly, as dawn broke, the survivors on board felt a sense of rebirth, as if they had been given a second chance at life.
No one could have anticipated that boarding the ship would lead them into such a terrifying storm, as if they had taken a detour through the gates of hell. Some had survived, while others would never return to this world.
Lu Fei Fan had spent the night meditating in the Viewing Tower, drawing energy from the peculiar black eyeball by running the Fu Mai Xi Shu technique. It felt like he had stumbled upon a vast treasure trove. Despite his efforts throughout the night, he hadn’t fully refined all the energy contained within that strange eyeball. However, after recharging the Fire Spider Sniper Rifle with Tao Hua energy, which had been depleted, it was now nearly restored.
Compared to others who appeared exhausted and weary, he felt invigorated and full of energy.
But he was certain that he couldn’t completely refine all the energy from that monstrous black eyeball just yet. After a night of circulating his breath, it seemed he had only consumed a portion of its power. This indicated just how formidable the creature behind that eyeball truly was.
The benefits were evident; after hundreds of cycles of breath circulation, many cells within him had awakened. The parched fields inside him were once again filled with vitality. In that chaotic Pulse Energy space, four stars that had previously dimmed reignited, and even two more awakened, bringing the total to seven faint stars glowing in that void.
What level of Fuser was he now?
He didn’t know the specific classifications for human Fusers and couldn’t access the Virtual Network at this moment. Otherwise, he could have let Hero—this rogue—sneak into the Free Federation Army's website to steal some information to confirm his level.
It was known that Fusers had levels determined through assessments; upon evaluation, one would receive an appropriate title. He had never cared about such matters before but found himself curious now.
Never mind; if he didn’t know for now, he could set it aside temporarily. Once he passed the assessment, he would naturally learn more. For now, it was best to focus on solidifying his cultivation.
At that moment, A Teng and Niu Dali returned, each carrying a bag filled with something. They both reeked of fishy odors, and A Teng even chuckled as he patted Lu Fei Fan on the back and said, “Boss, we’ve hit the jackpot this time.”
“Oh?” Lu Fei Fan glanced at the bags beside them, his eyes questioning: Could it be?
Niu Dali nodded in response and said, “These bags are filled with materials from the monster bodies that Dali and I dissected all night long. We should be able to sell them for a good sum.”
Lu Fei Fan raised his thumb and praised, "Clever!"
"Hey, who told us we’re brothers? Uncle is still in the hospital and short on cash. Da Li and I just took a bit more material. If it weren't for seeing you faint from that gunshot earlier, we would have..." A Teng's words trailed off as he suddenly looked as if he had seen a ghost.
Everyone turned to see Tao Hua standing ominously in front of the three, holding a finely crafted silver knife that looked like it could slice through anything!
"Ah ha, Tao Hua! What wind blew you here, enchanting Chu Chu?" A Teng immediately switched to a fawning tone, eager to avoid any trouble.
"Who was just talking behind my back?" Tao Hua glared at A Teng with a menacing look.
A Teng, with a face as thick as a brick wall, responded with an air of bravado, "Exactly! Which bastard was it? I’ll curse him to have sons without any... you know..."
Such a vicious curse could be uttered, and Lu Fei Fan exchanged glances with Niu Dali, both utterly impressed!
Tao Hua swatted A Teng aside with her sword, too lazy to deal with him. She glanced at Lu Fei Fan as if to say he should intervene. He shrugged his shoulders in helplessness. Finally, she said with some irritation, "I’m here to let you know that the ship is nearing the shore. Hurry up and pack your things and get lost."
A Teng and Niu Dali picked up their belongings as if granted a reprieve and hurriedly made their way down. Lu Fei Fan lingered behind, standing side by side with Tao Hua as they watched the sun rise in the distance.
"Finally over," Lu Fei Fan remarked with a hint of nostalgia.
"For us, this is just the beginning," Tao Hua turned to him meaningfully. "I’ve discussed your upcoming assessment scores with Ma Wei Major. We will conduct a detailed personal evaluation of this operation, which will then be submitted to the Military Headquarters for review."
With that, Tao Hua descended from the Viewing Tower. Lu Fei Fan followed closely behind but as soon as he reached the deck, he spotted a striking man with long black hair who looked almost feminine.
"By the way, his name is Chu Wei Lan," Tao Hua introduced him intriguingly before turning to the man and introducing Lu Fei Fan. "This is Lu Fei Fan, the 'Flower' of Playboy, extraordinary in every sense."
Chu Wei Lan glanced at Lu Fei Fan and then ignored him, instead focusing on polishing his two exquisitely crafted Long Barrel Pistols with a white handkerchief. Lu Fei Fan observed this individual, having noticed before that he seemed far from ordinary.
During the battle at the Ferry, Lu Fei Fan had also taken note of him; his combat skills were impressive, clearly indicating that he was a practitioner of some sort.
"Let's get to know each other; who knows, you might end up working together in the future," said Tao Hua, before turning away from the two.
Chu Wei Lan appeared uninterested in such matters, meticulously cleaning his beloved pistols. However, Lu Fei Fan found himself intrigued by them. Having been trained under a hero, he possessed a high level of knowledge about firearms and could tell that Chu Wei Lan's pistols were not only exquisitely made but also intricately engraved with energy arrays. It was evident that these weapons were extraordinary, likely crafted by a master.
If only he could possess Energy Guns of such caliber, his own strength would surely increase significantly...
Chu Wei Lan seemed to sense Lu Fei Fan's scrutiny of his prized possessions and shot him a hostile glare.
Yet, Lu Fei Fan appeared oblivious to the murderous intent in the other's gaze, remaining lost in his own fantasies. To Chu Wei Lan, this was undoubtedly a provocation that belittled him. He cleared his throat deliberately and tucked his guns back into the holster beneath his coat.
"Hey, hey, hey..." Lu Fei Fan finally withdrew his gaze reluctantly, wearing an expression as if to say that looking wouldn't hurt him. He then cast a mournful glance at Chu Wei Lan.
Chu Wei Lan's hostility deepened as he fixed an intense stare on Lu Fei Fan, exuding an aggressive demeanor.
Lu Fei Fan seemed to understand the situation better now. He smiled and shrugged, as if to suggest that it was Chu Wei Lan who was putting on a show for others to see.
"Hmph." Chu Wei Lan let out a cold huff, turning away and walking off.
After he left, Lu Fei Fan cheekily gave him the finger and stuck out his tongue while making a silly face.
The Ferry continued its journey for about half an hour before entering a tranquil sea area. Ahead, Federal Warships began to appear, patrolling nearby while Fighter Jets occasionally zipped through the sky, leaving behind the roar of their engines.
Seeing the Free Federation Fighter Jets and warships, many survivors on the Ferry felt a sense of reassurance deep down, as it at least proved they were in a safe maritime zone.
Lu Fei Fan stood on the deck, and he could already see the outline of the Island City in the distance. It was not small; it was likely a city with a population of several hundred thousand, as indicated by the military ships and other vessels entering and leaving the bay.
As the battered Ferry entered the harbor, several warships began to depart from the port. Many civilian vessels within the harbor were turned back by the military ships patrolling outside, indicating that the situation outside had not yet been resolved; otherwise, these civilian ships would not have been prohibited from sailing.
When the Ferry slowly docked, a convoy drove in from the harbor terminal, led by a Military Jeep. A Major stepped out of the vehicle, followed by several trucks filled with soldiers, including two trucks that were Free Federation military ambulances.
Soldiers began to disembark from the vehicles to maintain order for those leaving the ship, while a group of Medical Soldiers started to efficiently treat the injured.
Peach Blossom and Ma Wei directed others to help carry the wounded off the ship for emergency treatment. Some of the injured were in critical condition and urgently needed to be transported to a hospital for surgery.
During this time, a few strong and dark-skinned medics attempted to check Lu Fei Fan's body, but he refused them one by one. Meanwhile, A Teng and Da Li managed to fool two relatively attractive Military Doctors into examining them. The two energetic men suddenly collapsed on the ground upon seeing the doctors, crying out in pain, leaving the two female medics at a loss for how to proceed.
In the end, Peach Blossom could no longer stand it. She walked over and kicked each of them, scolding, "If you cause any more trouble, you'll be taken ashore for execution!"
Immediately, the two pretending to be injured sprang up like nothing had happened.
Naturally, this earned them disdainful looks from the two female medics.
Once most of the injured had been treated, it was time to clear the bodies from the ship. The corpses of fallen soldiers were covered with Free Federation flags and carried down on stretchers. However, ordinary casualties among the Evaluators did not receive such honors.
Lu Fei Fan and other able-bodied Assessment Trainees disembarked and were arranged to be transported on two trucks. Peach Blossom and Ma Wei were among the last to leave the ship. The vessel was temporarily taken over by personnel from the Coastal Garrison. She couldn't help but turn back for a deep look at this battered Ferry, where some veteran soldiers remained onboard to assist with cleanup.
Peach Blossom seemed to regain her composure as she straightened her military uniform and finally rendered a solemn salute towards the ship!
A powerful command echoed behind her.
"All personnel—"
It was the Major who had descended from the Jeep on the shore. His order made all the soldiers on guard stand tall, their rifles held straight like their spines.
"Salute to the true warriors aboard the ship, and to those Revolutionary Martyrs who will never return from the vast Ocean!"
The Major shouted with all his might.
With a clatter, the soldiers raised their rifles in unison toward the ship, paying the highest military tribute to the sea.
Tao Hua, standing at the front, was instantly moved to tears, while the surviving Veterans on the ship paused their work, standing upright to return the salute to the soldiers on shore.
In that moment, they recalled a glorious and sacred oath they had recited upon enlisting in the Free Federation:
—We are soldiers without regret. If our homeland needs us, bury me in the vast ocean, so that my body may grow into an invisible barrier, protecting the Free Federation and our loved ones.
