"Time waits for no one, make your decision quickly," the examiner seated in front reminded them, as there were many others waiting behind for their assessments. The examiner couldn't afford to let them waste too much time.
Lu Fei Fan nodded and glanced at A Teng and Niu Dali, who both returned his look with a nod, clearly having made up their minds.
"I choose left!"
"I choose right!"
The three of them spoke almost in unison.
Lu Fei Fan was taken aback, looking at the two with surprise. They both shot him disdainful glances, clearly lacking any sort of tacit understanding despite being brothers for so many years.
It was unexpected for Lu Fei Fan as well, since A Teng and Niu Dali had chosen right while he had chosen left.
"Alright." The examiner didn't give them a chance to change their minds and directly stamped their badges before waving his hand. "Next group, prepare."
"Wow, boss, you really have no sense of teamwork with us," A Teng scoffed.
"Yeah, yeah, the left Assessment Venue is too dangerous. What if you go in and can't hold on for a few seconds before getting carried out? That would be a total waste..." Niu Dali scratched his head, also puzzled by Lu Fei Fan's choice.
Lu Fei Fan shrugged and explained, "I observed earlier that not many people entered the left venue because fewer dared to take that risk. However, the right venue had more people entering but also more coming out. So I deduced that the assessment difficulty in the right venue should be greater than that of the left. But that's just my personal guess; it all depends on your abilities now. I believe you both will pass this round without any issues." He patted A Teng and Niu Dali on the shoulders.
"Boss, before you go in, can you pass on your treasured 'Yu Nv Ling Long Shu' to me? I wouldn't want you to die young and let your unique skills be lost!" A Teng wailed dramatically, his voice loud enough to attract disdainful looks from nearby Female Students and Female Soldiers—such a disgraceful display.
"Get lost." Lu Fei Fan kicked this troublemaker away.
"Hey, hey! You can't die on us! We have a dream of finding big-bottomed wives together and having kids!" Niu Dali chimed in without a hint of shame.
"What does that have to do with anything? When did I ever say I wanted to find a big-bottomed wife with you?" Lu Fei Fan felt helpless; how did he end up with such two troublesome friends?
Finally, he waved his hand dismissively, too lazy to deal with these two clowns. But as they watched Lu Fei Fan leave, they cried out even louder, creating an atmosphere akin to mourning at a funeral, making Lu Fei Fan wish he could turn around and silence them for good.
Ascending a flight of stairs to the left, Lu Fei Fan arrived at the Assessment Venue. Outside the Gate stood a group of guards and a Deputy Examiner specifically assigned to monitor the entrance.
The Deputy Examiner scanned the badge hanging from Lu Fei Fan's chest with a wrist-mounted scanner. After confirming his identity, he stated, "You have ten minutes to enter the venue and capture thirty targets. Dead ones do not count."
"Capture targets?" Lu Fei Fan felt a surge of curiosity but refrained from asking further questions. The sight of so many people being carried out earlier made it clear that whatever was contained within this venue was not easy to handle.
With a hiss, the Gate released a gust of air and opened wide enough for a person to enter. The Deputy Examiner gestured for Lu Fei Fan to proceed, and amidst a sea of white mist, he walked in with his head held high.
"When you complete your mission and wish to exit, press the emergency red button inside. We will open the door for you. However, if you fail to complete your mission within ten minutes, we will send someone in to carry you out," the Deputy Examiner warned as Lu Fei Fan stepped inside. Immediately after his warning, he burst into laughter with the guards.
Lu Fei Fan chose to ignore them. As soon as he crossed the threshold, the Gate emitted another rush of air and slammed shut behind him.
Before he could take in his surroundings, a slender black shadow shot toward him at high speed!
He quickly turned his head to dodge the fast-approaching object, only to see it crash against the hard Gate behind him with a loud thud.
It was then that Lu Fei Fan realized what had attacked him.
A snake!
A silver-white snake measuring only four or five inches long, but it had an unusual appearance. Its head bore distinctive silver horns, and its slender body was agile and quick.
After lying motionless on the ground for a few seconds, the snake shook its head and lifted its body upright, staring intently at Lu Fei Fan.
This was—Lightning Silver Snake!
Lu Fei Fan had encountered this creature on the Virtual Network. It could launch itself at incredible speeds like lightning and possessed a paralyzing venom that could induce temporary unconsciousness. A large enough dose could even be life-threatening. These snakes were known for their aggressive nature toward any intruders in their territory.
The snake lunged at him again, but Lu Fei Fan shifted his body just in time to evade it. However, this movement caught the attention of other Lightning Silver Snakes within the venue.
Hiss!
A sound like hissing filled the air.
Lu Fei Fan turned to look, taking a sharp breath as a chill ran down his spine. Less than ten meters away from the entrance, a dense mass of Lightning Silver Snakes covered the ground, and even the windows were filled with them. The sight was enough to trigger a sense of fear in him; what unsettled Lu Fei Fan even more was the way they all raised their heads in unison, staring at him with an expression that clearly marked him as an intruder. If they all attacked at once...
Being swarmed by this multitude of Lightning Silver Snakes would surely leave him either dead or poisoned into unconsciousness. No wonder so many people who had entered before were carried out. The sheer number of Lightning Silver Snakes released into this venue was terrifying; it was hard to believe that the examiner who had placed them here was anything but a complete sadist.
Lu Fei Fan slowly crouched down, avoiding any sudden movements that might attract a horde of Lightning Silver Snakes to attack him.
He began to observe the snakes. After sitting still for a while, he noticed that aside from those near the entrance still fixated on him, the others seemed relatively calm. After all, they were trapped here and likely quite agitated and hungry. Any sudden movement on his part would undoubtedly provoke them into a frenzy.
The Deputy Examiner had instructed him to capture thirty snakes, meaning he needed to catch thirty Lightning Silver Snakes to qualify. Lacking any tools for capturing them, Lu Fei Fan thought for a moment before removing his shirt and carefully tying it into a makeshift bag, leaving only an opening to hold onto.
Just as he finished this task, three or four snakes suddenly raised their heads and shot towards him with alarming speed, crashing against the wall with loud thuds. Some of these fellows were still swimming around, trying to get closer. Lu Fei Fan quickly dodged out of the way, but this movement caught the attention of several other snakes, which also lifted their heads and looked at him warily.
With a whoosh, two more lightning-fast shadows came flying at him. Lu Fei Fan tilted his head to evade them and instinctively reached out, managing to grab one of them. However, this particular fellow was incredibly agile and immediately turned to bite his hand. Lu Fei Fan quickly flung it away, breaking into a cold sweat.
If he got bitten, his hand would likely go numb, making it even harder to complete his task.
These snakes reacted with remarkable speed. Lu Fei Fan realized that in order to catch them effectively, he needed to grab them by the head while simultaneously distracting them. He began provoking several nearby Lightning Silver Snakes into attacking him; as he dodged their strikes, he seized two of their heads in quick succession and tossed them into his makeshift bag before securing the opening tightly.
Indeed, this method proved much more efficient for catching snakes. Gradually, Lu Fei Fan attracted more attention from the snakes around him. With his left hand holding the bag to lure them in, he used his right hand to grab their heads and toss them inside.
With experience came speed; Lu Fei Fan's snake-catching ability improved dramatically as if he were a seasoned snake charmer. He lost count of how many he had caught amidst his growing confidence. However, as he made more noise during his captures, the number of attacking Lightning Silver Snakes escalated from just a few to dozens. Lu Fei Fan found himself frantically dodging as he felt the weight of his bag increase—he estimated he had caught enough by now.
He dashed toward the exit as countless Lightning Silver Snakes began to notice him and swiftly raised themselves up to strike. Seeing the chaotic flurry of serpentine shadows rushing toward him, Lu Fei Fan rolled and crawled on the ground in a desperate attempt to evade the overwhelming number of attacks. Unfortunately, despite his efforts, one managed to bite him on the shoulder and buttocks. A tingling sensation shot through him; there was no time for hesitation—if he continued like this, he'd surely be knocked out!
Gritting his teeth, he stood up and sprinted toward the exit just a few meters away, quickly slapping down on the red button on the wall!
Ding ding.
Even then, three or four snakes managed to bite him again; he felt a sharp pain in his back as Lu Fei Fan activated Fu Mai Xi Shu to suppress the venom injected into him using his cellular energy swiftly.
At the same time that Lu Fei Fan pressed the red emergency door button, a wave of hot air and smoke erupted from the device on the Gate, blowing back the Lightning Silver Snakes that were trying to get close to attack him.
Many of the Lightning Silver Snakes were pushed back a considerable distance by the gust. In that instant, the Gate opened, and two Proctors enveloped in Special Energy shields rushed in. Without a second thought, Lu Fei Fan dashed toward the exit.
It wasn't until the Gate closed behind him that Lu Fei Fan let out a sigh of relief. Damn, catching snakes in that den was too thrilling, especially with those fast-moving silver snakes. He had at least a dozen bite wounds on him, and he could feel the snake venom starting to spread in some areas. However, Lu Fei Fan was quietly activating the Fu Mai Xi Shu to expel the invading venom. After a while, the venom began to flow out of his wounds as a transparent liquid.
"Hmm? Did you catch this?" The Deputy Examiner hadn't noticed that Lu Fei Fan was exerting himself to force out the snake venom; instead, he focused on the cloth bag Lu Fei Fan was holding.
Lu Fei Fan handed over the cloth bag to the Deputy Examiner, who weighed it in his hands.
"Not bad," he said with a token compliment before pulling out a spray can and spraying it into the bag. Instantly, the previously lively Lightning Silver Snakes inside fell silent, likely put to sleep by the spray.
The Deputy Examiner had someone count them, and Lu Fei Fan didn't seem worried about whether he had caught enough. He continued to focus on expelling all of the remaining venom from his body. Once he finished forcing out the toxins, he felt much more refreshed and comfortable.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Examiner finished counting and was pleasantly surprised by the number of captures.
