When Lu Fei Fan returned to the hospital, his mother was taken aback to see him, Niu Dali, and A Teng carrying exquisite gift boxes. Niu Dali found a table in the ward and began to open the delicate pastries one by one. Hua Feifan's Mother stared in astonishment, clearly surprised by how fancy these treats looked; they seemed quite expensive.
"Fei Fan, where did you buy these? They must have cost a lot," she asked, unable to hide her concern. Given the current situation, she was worried about Lu Fei Fan wasting money.
A Teng and Niu Dali exchanged glances and then burst into laughter as they explained to Lu Fei Fan's mother, "Haha. Auntie, don't worry about the cost; these are free."
"Free?" Hua Feifan's Mother looked at them suspiciously. Could they be trying to pull a fast one on her?
"Yes, yes," Lu Fei Fan said eagerly as he took the lead in tasting the pastries.
Before long, he finished one piece and reached for a second, but his mother immediately interrupted him with more questions.
"Wait. What’s going on here? Did you spend money to buy these from the city?" Her tone was becoming slightly irritated; it seemed that if she didn’t get a serious explanation soon, she would truly be upset.
"Of course I didn't buy them," Lu Fei Fan sighed in response.
"That's right, Auntie! They really are free," A Teng chimed in as he grabbed a piece of Durian Cake and started munching on it.
Meanwhile, Niu Dali, who had been devouring a large cake like a hungry bull, lifted his head and mumbled through a mouthful, "These don’t cost anything. Your family’s Huahua made an impressive friend who does big business. He has plenty of money and is covering the bill."
"Really?" Hua Feifan's Mother still had her doubts. "Fei Fan, is that true?"
"When have I ever lied to you? It's absolutely true!" Lu Fei Fan replied earnestly. "Now, stop worrying so much and try this."
He held out a slice of pizza-shaped pastry to feed her. Finally, his mother impatiently took it from him and ate it herself.
Looking at the table full of pastries, Lu Fei Fan estimated that the patients in the ward wouldn't be able to finish them all. So, he took a considerable amount to give to the Nurse Station and the doctors in the Department. The nurses and doctors initially wanted to decline, but Lu Fei Fan's grateful demeanor made it difficult for them to refuse, especially since it wasn't anything valuable that violated any regulations.
"By the way, your brother has temporarily taken a job at a courier company. It's almost dinner time now, you..." his mother continued.
"Yes, I'll bring him some food," he replied. He packed two boxes of better pastries and asked his mother for his brother's specific work address before heading out alone. He had initially thought that A Teng and Niu Dali would want to join him, but Lu Fei Fan advised them to go back and prepare well since their training program was set to begin the next day.
Before parting ways with the two, he reminded them to bring along the D-Level Gene Cell Liquid he had left for them last time. They both nodded eagerly in agreement.
After bidding farewell to the two at the hospital entrance, Lu Fei Fan made his way through the city district towards his brother's courier station.
At that moment, Lu Fei Fan's brother, Hua Jun Tang, was helping a colleague unload goods from a truck at the courier station. Hua Jun Tang seemed to have tanned a bit more than before, but he appeared much steadier overall and was currently sweating profusely from the hard work.
While they were unloading, a young man wearing a plaid shirt and sporting brightly dyed yellow and purple hair approached them.
"Excuse me, I want to pick up my package," the young man said, shaking his vibrant hair as he addressed the two workers.
"Hua Jun Tang, go find his package and register it," an older employee instructed.
"Yes, Brother Liu," Hua Jun Tang replied respectfully. After all, Brother Liu was the team leader, and Hua Jun Tang had been recruited by him. He had always been decent towards newcomers as well as himself during their familiarization with the job.
Hua Jun Tang quickly located the young man's package; it was a small box but quite heavy when lifted.
The young man squatted down and pulled out a folding knife from behind him to cut open the packaging. Inside was a lot of straw, and after rummaging around inside, he pulled out a jar that resembled an antique porcelain piece.
“Damn it, it’s broken! You have to pay for this!” Chang Mao shouted as he turned and yelled towards the distance, “Big Brother, something happened!”
Hua Jun Tang's heart sank; this was bad. He noticed a few people in the distance smoking, some of whom looked rough and definitely not respectable. They were making their way over.
Brother Liu heard the commotion and approached with two other veteran employees.
“What’s going on?” Brother Liu asked.
“It’s broken as soon as he opened it,” Hua Jun Tang pointed at the box.
But Chang Mao, tossing his hair back and placing his hands on his hips, retorted defiantly, “Nonsense! It must have been you guys who broke it while unloading or transporting!”
“What’s happening? What’s happening?” A young man in a jacket, with a toothpick in his mouth and sunglasses on, squeezed into the crowd. He was adorned with gold chains around his neck and fingers, clearly the leader of this group.
“Big Brother, they broke it!” Chang Mao Di pointed at the box.
The big brother squatted down to inspect the ceramic pieces before standing up to look at Brother Liu and Hua Jun Tang. There was no sign of sympathy on his face; instead, he said, “Do you know what this is? This is ancient porcelain, an antique. Do you understand? Forget it; it’s terrifying how uneducated you are. I won’t bother arguing with you—fifty thousand.”
“It’s possible that it was already broken inside,” Hua Jun Tang couldn’t help but interject.
“What did you say?” The big brother shoved Hua Jun Tang.
Immediately, Hua Jun Tang and several other veteran employees began to push back. Seeing the situation escalate, the other employees put down their work and rushed over, forming a standoff between the two groups.
"Don't get angry, don't get angry, let's talk this out," Brother Liu interjected hurriedly.
"Stop the nonsense. Are you going to compensate us or not? If not, we're going to smash this place!" The leader of the group pointed aggressively at Brother Liu.
"Brother Liu, don't reason with them. These people are clearly here to extort us," Hua Jun Tang realized that they were obviously trying to shake them down.
"Get him!" The leader immediately signaled his men to attack, and in an instant, the thugs pulled out iron rods and quickly knocked Hua Jun Tang and several older employees to the ground.
Seeing Brother Liu being beaten, Hua Jun Tang rushed forward to help, grabbing hold of the thug who was attacking Brother Liu. The Hooligan Leader kicked Hua Jun Tang down, stepping on him as he fell.
"You're the toughest one, huh? I'll crush you!" The Hooligan Leader raised his foot, ready to stomp down hard!
Smack!
"Ouch!" The Hooligan Leader hopped back, clutching his leg in pain.
A leg had shot out like lightning between him and Hua Jun Tang, making it feel as if he had stepped on a steel plate.
