“Challenge?” Li Wei looked at the confident young man who seemed determined to confront him.
“Yes,” the young man replied, exuding confidence.
“Alright, then I’ll play along with you,” Li Wei nodded in agreement.
As the challenge was accepted, the crowd of onlookers automatically parted, with Lu Fei Fan, A Teng, and others naturally retreating with the crowd. Such a duel held a certain significance.
“I recognize that guy; he seems to be from Azure Dragon Hall. He’s probably just looking for trouble,” Lu Fei Fan heard one of the students say to another nearby.
“Now that you mention it, I do recall seeing him before at Azure Dragon Hall. He appears to be a favored student under one of their instructors. Could it be that Azure Dragon Hall is deliberately trying to make things difficult for us at Xuanwu Pavilion?” another student chimed in with gossip.
“Haven’t you all heard? The two heads of Azure Dragon Hall and Xuanwu Pavilion are actually from the same lineage. They are both top students of Master Fu, the Mad Phantom Lion King. I hear both heads are on the verge of breaking through to General rank. Otherwise, do you think there would be so many students signing up for their training programs before the major examination? They’re all chasing after that reputation,” the first student continued, boasting about what he had heard, leaving those around him in awe.
“It’s about to start!” someone shouted, and instantly, the gossiping crowd turned their attention toward the center.
In the middle of the venue, the crowd had retreated to create a circular space, allowing everyone to watch from the periphery. Li Wei appeared calm and confident, while his challenger exuded an air of certainty, even with a hint of mockery.
“I am Hu Dahai!” the challenger declared with a cupped fist salute, clearly wanting to make his name known to those watching in hopes of seizing a chance for fame.
In contrast, Li Wei's response was succinct and calm as he stated his name: “Li Wei.”
“Good. Then I look forward to your guidance!” Hu Dahai stepped back into a horse stance, his aura suddenly surging as his energy began to circulate rapidly. Lu Fei Fan could clearly sense Hu Dahai's Pulse Energy accelerating within his body, continuously gathering in his meridians and cells, especially in his fists and feet. Even before launching an attack, the waves of Pulse Energy radiating from him were already imposing.
“The Dragon Breath Technique truly is exceptional when activated,” Li Wei remarked with a slight nod of appreciation as she stood opposite him. She then began to channel her own Pulse Breathing Technique. A gentle breeze swirled up from the ground around her, encircling her form as a greenish Pulse Energy flickered in and out of visibility, transforming into dazzling rays of light.
“Hmph! The Xuanwu Pulse Technique from Xuanwu Pavilion isn’t too shabby either,” Hu Dahai scoffed upon seeing that Li Wei’s momentum was not inferior to his own.
“Whether it’s impressive or not, you’ll find out soon enough,” Li Wei retorted sharply, narrowing her eyes at him.
“Alright!” Hu Dahai shouted furiously, suddenly unleashing his full Pulse Energy as he charged toward Li Wei. “Take this punch!”
The entire Pulse Energy surged between Hu Dahai's fists, countless shadows of punches raining down on Li Wei like a fierce storm. The air crackled with the sound of punches breaking through.
Li Wei quickly retreated, his body’s Pulse Energy surging forth, forming a massive energy entity that collided with the relentless barrage of powerful punches.
Boom!
In less than a moment after they separated, they clashed again!
“Crazy Phantom Lion Fist!”
“Thorny Cloud Vine!”
Fists continuously erupted from Hu Dahai’s swinging arms, but each strike was dispersed by the Pulse Energy that Li Wei had gathered. The vine even found openings to continuously stab at Hu Dahai, who was forced to dodge while smashing through the ‘Thorny Cloud Vine’ attacks constructed by Li Wei’s own Pulse Energy.
This was the battle between Fusers; it wasn’t just Lu Fei Fan. Even many of the lower-level students present were witnessing such a fierce application of combat Ability between Fusers for the first time. The two fought back and forth in the arena for dozens of exchanges, but it was clear that Li Wei's Pulse Energy was thicker and more resilient. Gradually, Hu Dahai, who relied heavily on the energy-consuming Crazy Phantom Lion Fist Ability, began to show signs of exhaustion. Seizing an opening when Hu Dahai couldn’t evade in time, Li Wei unleashed a massive ‘Thorny Cloud Vine’ that swept toward him.
Seeing it coming, Hu Dahai had no time to punch back and crossed his arms to form a shield. Bang!
Hu Dahai was instantly swept away, crashing to the ground and rolling several times. Before he could struggle to get up, he spat out a mouthful of blood and then collapsed unconscious.
“Senior Brother!”
Those who had come with Hu Dahai rushed forward; they were clearly his junior disciples. After checking, they found that Hu Dahai was merely injured and unconscious but not in any life-threatening danger. It was evident that Li Wei had shown mercy in his final strike.
“Carry him back to rest properly,” Li Wei instructed.
“Stop! Don’t get too arrogant…” The junior disciples of Hu Dahai couldn’t swallow their anger upon hearing Li Wei’s words and attempted to rise up to retaliate.
“What? Do you want to fight too?” Li Wei turned to look at them, seemingly having anticipated their reaction.
“Stand down!”
At that moment, a deep voice like a bell echoed from outside the crowd.
The people automatically parted to make way for a man in his thirties, dressed in a white samurai outfit emblazoned with the character for "Zen." He had a square face and sported a sharp crew cut. Most importantly, the aura of Pulse Energy he deliberately exuded made it difficult for those around him to breathe; several ordinary students without any foundational skills even fainted.
"Senior Brother Jiang," Li Wei said, bowing respectfully.
He nodded and approached Li Wei, glancing at Hu Dahai, who lay on the ground not far away. Then he addressed the few students from Azure Dragon Hall who still wanted to stir up trouble.
"Consider this a favor for me, Jiang Wannian. Let’s put an end to this matter here. If anyone from the Qinglong Academy wants to avenge their injured brother, I, Jiang Wannian, am always ready to oblige."
This statement instantly caused an uproar among the crowd.
"What! He is Jiang Wannian!"
"What’s so special about Jiang Wannian?"
"Hey, haven’t you heard? Jiang Wannian is quite a figure in the Jiangnan Continent. He has quite an impressive track record—awakened his abilities at ten, passed the Unified Awakeners Examination at fifteen, and was ranked among the top three among all his peers in that year. His skills are no joke; those who challenge him either end up dead or severely injured. He has never lost a match. Just recently, he was tasked with hunting down a deep-sea mutated beast that attacked a village. He fought for three nights straight and not only killed the beast but also uprooted its lair. I heard that recently, people from the Central Special Zone came down to recruit him into the independent Trump Card Lighthouse Guard of Jiangnan Continent."
Hiss—
Upon hearing this, the surrounding crowd gasped in shock.
"The Lighthouse Guard! They are the elite among Fusers, each one a formidable powerhouse capable of standing against thousands," someone remarked.
As this information spread, the students around turned their gazes toward Jiang Wannian with eager admiration. The Azure Dragon Hall students dared not say a word and hurriedly carried Hu Dahai away, leaving in shame. They were aware of their own limitations; provoking a monster-level Fuser like Jiang Wannian was nothing short of courting death.
After watching them leave, Jiang Wannian scanned the crowd and paused briefly on several students, including Lu Fei Fan, indicating something unusual.
"Senior Brother Jiang, what brings you here today?" Li Wei respectfully inquired.
“Hmm, the teacher asked me to select a few individuals for focused guidance. If they pass this Aptitude Test successfully and achieve outstanding results, we at Xuanwu Pavilion will prioritize their training.” Jiang Wannian's voice was not deliberately lowered, and his words caught the attention of many present.
Immediately, several people became excited, whispering among themselves. A Teng and Niu Dali both hoped that luck would smile upon them; if Jiang Wannian chose them, wouldn’t that mean a bright future ahead?
However, Lu Fei Fan was merely here to observe the excitement. He hadn’t expected to witness and hear so much; it was quite a harvest in itself, and he would need to go back and digest it all.
“Please continue with your lesson. I’ll head upstairs to the office for a while and review the applicants’ materials,” Jiang Wannian waved his hand to signal Li Wei to continue before heading upstairs alone.
The office on the second floor of the pavilion was designated for training instructors. The first floor had a spacious area for lectures and numerous training facilities, such as a dedicated room for practicing the Pulse Technique, rows of Human Sandbags for testing and practicing strength, electronic test tracks for speed training, and an agility area filled with hanging weights for dodging practice.
After watching Jiang Wannian leave, Li Wei gathered the eager students together and began his lecture.
“Even if a Fuser awakens their abilities, without diligent training, they will stagnate or even fade away. This world is never short of talent; what it lacks are those who are diligent and persistent until the end. Hard work can make up for shortcomings. As long as you follow the breathing techniques I teach you, you will be able to activate your cellular energy and cultivate Pulse Energy, allowing you to harness it into your Ability!” Li Wei spoke passionately.
“Next, I will teach you a simple set of common techniques that you can use to meditate and cultivate Pulse Energy. As for Ability, that will only come once you have cultivated Pulse Energy. After all, with Pulse Energy, you can naturally create your own combat techniques. Now, repeat the techniques after me…” Li Wei began to teach a set of incantations. Lu Fei Fan listened attentively; compared to his own Fu Mai Xi Shu technique, Li Wei’s teachings were indeed more suited for basic Fuser trainees and not quite suitable for him.
A Teng and Niu Dali were earnestly practicing the techniques. Lu Fei Fan did not want to disturb them. After listening for about ten more minutes, he realized that some of Li Wei’s cultivation advice did not align with his own needs. So he decided to step back and head to the training area for some proper practice. After all, he was already here; although the facilities were simple, they were fundamentally sound. It would be better to train here before heading back.
With that thought in mind, he licked his lips in excitement and made his way toward the strength Human Sandbag area. Several students were already there using their hands and feet to kick and strike the Human Sandbags. Above the Sandbag Machine was a Power Display showing the force being applied.
