Lu Fei Fan was escorted out of the airport by a soldier in a Jeep, passing through several tightly guarded checkpoints before finally leaving the heavily monitored military area.
Afterward, Lu Fei Fan instructed the soldier to take him directly to the hospital. Having been imprisoned for so long, he felt a heavy concern about his father's condition in the hospital, so he didn't engage in much conversation with the driver, a Second Lieutenant.
It wasn't until they arrived at the hospital that Lu Fei Fan grabbed his bag and jumped out of the car, waving to thank the soldier. The soldier nodded and calmly drove away.
At the Nurse Station, Lu Fei Fan inquired about his father's room and soon found himself at a single comfortable patient room. There, he saw his mother attending to his father by the bedside. Her hair had noticeably more gray strands, and she looked much more haggard than before.
"Mom," Lu Fei Fan called as he entered the room.
His mother looked up in surprise, momentarily at a loss for words. Lu Fei Fan walked over, set down his luggage, and took the towel from her hands. "I’m here."
"Brother... how did you get out? Didn't the lawyer say you had to become a Fuser first..." A voice from outside interrupted them; it was his younger brother. Lu Fei Fan turned to see his dark-skinned, frail brother with bruises on his face.
"What happened to your face?" Lu Fei Fan asked directly instead of answering him.
"I..." His brother stammered, struggling to find words. "I fell while running."
"Who hit you?" Lu Fei Fan knew that those marks on his brother's face were definitely not from a fall; he must have been beaten.
"Ah." His mother sighed deeply from behind him. "Fei Fan, don’t blame your brother. Ever since you were imprisoned, those thugs from the casino have been bothering us. We called the police several times, but it didn’t help. Your brother got into fights with them multiple times. Thankfully, your two friends, A Teng and Da Li, helped out; otherwise, those thugs would have been even more reckless."
Lu Fei Fan nodded, taking note of this information. He then pulled out a Savings Card that Wan Changqing had given him upon his release. It contained the prize money from the fight he won that night, which he accepted without hesitation.
"Mom, there are three million on this card," Lu Fei Fan said as he handed it to her.
“Brother, how do you have so much money?” The younger brother was astonished. Last time he had given over two hundred thousand, and now, after being released from prison, there were still three million…
Upon hearing this, their mother immediately became anxious and pulled Lu Fei Fan aside, asking, “You didn’t do anything illegal, did you?”
“Of course not, Mom. This money is what I earned from stock trading while I was inside.” Lu Fei Fan fabricated an excuse, not wanting to reveal that he had earned this money through life-and-death fights, fearing it would only add to their worries.
“Really?” His mother looked skeptical. “You didn’t sneak out, did you?”
“How could I? I even have a release certificate.” With that, Lu Fei Fan took out a document proving his release. It stated that Lu Fei Fan was released without charges or, more accurately, that the investigation had concluded and his brief detention was over; he was released in innocence.
Seeing the certificate with an official stamp reassured his mother a bit. The younger brother didn’t seem to mind much either. Lu Fei Fan then inquired about their father’s condition.
His father’s condition was stable but still in a coma with no signs of improvement. To awaken and recover, he needed the ‘Jinwu Holy Blood Pill,’ which was extremely expensive. Currently, they had managed to gather three million for medical expenses, so there were no immediate worries. Lu Fei Fan could even consider moving them to a better hospital.
After helping his father clean up, Lu Fei Fan bought his mother plenty of supplements and instructed his brother to rest well in the hospital while he went out to take care of some business.
As Lu Fei Fan stepped out of the hospital, he noticed a few thugs loitering at the entrance. Among them were two who had been beaten by him at the casino before; they recognized him instantly and were visibly frightened, turning on their heels and running away.
Lu Fei Fan watched them leave with a cold smile. He decided to let them go for now and would deal with them later after taking care of his urgent matters.
He hailed a taxi in the city and headed straight for a lower-income neighborhood. Outside the bustling city center, such neighborhoods were common on this island; wealthy people had moved to industrialized areas with better infrastructure. These lower-class islands were often overlooked by the Free Federation unless they held significant geographical importance.
After getting out of the taxi, Lu Fei Fan walked through the makeshift Civilian Houses around him. Most were wooden structures; only those in slightly better condition were made of brick and stone, but overall conditions appeared poor. Navigating through the winding residential area filled with narrow alleys made it easy to get lost, especially with muddy patches on the ground.
After asking several people for directions, Lu Fei Fan finally found the address given to him by One-armed. Before him stood a dilapidated Civilian House that looked like it was among the worst in the area.
Lu Fei Fan walked up to the door of the confinement room and knocked.
“Is anyone there?” Lu Fei Fan asked.
Knock, knock—
Lu Fei Fan knocked a few more times.
“Cough, cough, just a moment,” came a weak female voice from inside.
After a while, a middle-aged woman with graying hair opened the door. She looked to be nearly fifty, hunched over and appearing somewhat frail. She wore a patched-up coat and coughed several times before managing to assess Lu Fei Fan.
“Who are you looking for?”
“Someone from prison sent me to find you,” Lu Fei Fan replied, extending a necklace he held in his hand. The woman took the necklace and examined it closely, her expression turning to one of disbelief as she looked at Lu Fei Fan.
“Come in,” the old woman beckoned, then turned and entered the room alone.
Lu Fei Fan followed her inside and noticed that the room was sparsely furnished, containing only a few worn chairs and a table. There was nothing of value in sight.
“There’s not much here to offer you,” the old woman said as she found a chipped bowl and poured a glass of water for Lu Fei Fan.
Lu Fei Fan took the glass and placed it on the table. He then reached into his pocket and pulled out something wrapped in a handkerchief, presenting it to the woman. She took it with slightly trembling hands and gently unwrapped the handkerchief. Inside was a Federal Savings Card, which contained money that One-armed had managed to save up. Along with it were a ring and half of a photograph. The photo depicted a family of three; Lu Fei Fan recognized the woman as the one standing before him, while the man was undoubtedly One-armed. The boy was likely their child.
However, the half photograph seemed to have been through something significant—it had been torn apart and then reassembled with transparent tape. What had transpired to cause this damage remained a mystery.
“Is he... is he okay?” The old woman asked, her eyes slightly red as she looked up at Lu Fei Fan, her voice choked with emotion.
“He's doing well. He’s eating and living fine over there. He asked me to remind you to take good care of yourself. He will definitely come back to see you when he has the chance,” Lu Fei Fan replied.
“That’s good, that’s good. Good to hear…” The woman repeated the words several times, turning away momentarily to wipe her tears.
At that moment, the door creaked open.
A young man, dressed in simple short-sleeved clothing and with dark skin, hurriedly rushed in and quickly shut the door behind him. He spoke nervously, “Mom, we need to pack our things and leave here.”
As he finished speaking and turned around, he noticed a stranger sitting in their home.
“Who are you?” He looked at Lu Fei Fan with suspicion, grabbing a stick from the corner of the room as if fearing that Lu Fei Fan was there to capture him.
“Don’t be nervous; I’m not a bad person,” Lu Fei Fan said calmly.
“Pu Ning, put down the stick. He was sent by your father,” the woman interjected before breaking into another fit of coughs.
“My dad sent you?” The young man named Pu Ning eyed Lu Fei Fan warily for a moment before stepping forward to help his mother pat her back and ease her breathing.
Suddenly, urgent barking from outside broke the tension, followed by the sound of hurried footsteps. Several men stopped nearby and began talking outside.
“That guy is around here! Someone saw him just a moment ago.”
"Let me tell you, if we catch him, we'll skin him alive for daring to cheat us."
The group outside moved away, and inside the room, Pu Ning supported his mother, who was extremely tense and shot him an angry look.
"Mom, I'll explain everything later. We need to pack up and leave..." Pu Ning was trying to calm her down, but before he could finish his sentence.
Bang!
The door was kicked open.
Four or five shirtless men rushed into the room, surrounding them at the entrance. Lu Fei Fan sized up the intruders; each one wielded a pipe or a hook, glaring menacingly at Pu Ning.
Pu Ning raised his hand to shield his mother and said nervously, "If you have a problem, come at me. Don't touch my mom!"
"You little brat, still acting tough! Just wait until we knock your teeth out; let's see how you boast then!" One of the men spat on the floor and stepped forward to grab Pu Ning.
Pu Ning's mother pulled him back behind her, standing protectively in front of her son. "What do you want? Don't hurt my son; I'll give you whatever you need."
"Hmph! Your son cheated us while gambling not long ago. Now that we've caught him, he at least deserves to lose an arm; otherwise, he won't learn his lesson!" The leader shouted.
"No, please! How much does he owe you? I'll pay it all!" Pu Ning's mother hurriedly pulled out the card Lu Fei Fan had given her and offered it to them.
"Mom, don't give them that money!" Pu Ning shouted from behind, trying to stop her.
The leader gestured to one of his men, who stepped forward to take the Savings Card from Pu Ning's mother's hand. But just then, a hand pressed down on him first.
"Brothers, give me some face and let this matter go," Lu Fei Fan said.
At that moment, the big men finally noticed that there was a young man in the room. They were puzzled as to why this young man was here and had the audacity to interfere in their affairs. Was he looking for trouble?
"You must be tired of living! How dare you meddle in our business? Do you believe we won't take you down?" one of the big men said, his anger rising.
Lu Fei Fan simply smiled and remained silent, continuing to hold onto the man's hand.
Seeing Lu Fei Fan's calm demeanor, the big man wanted to teach him a lesson. However, when he tried to pull his hand back, he found it was as if a steel clamp had seized it. No matter how hard he struggled, he couldn't break free from Lu Fei Fan's grip.
The onlookers watched as the big man began to sweat profusely, clearly growing impatient.
"Hey, Guang San, stop wasting time with him and take him down!" the leader commanded.
"Mao Ge... I can't move my hand..." Guang San said, almost in tears.
"What a useless fool! Let me handle this," another accomplice said, unable to bear it any longer, swinging a club fiercely at Lu Fei Fan!
