“Thank you for everything during this time. Since you've been keeping me company while playing chess, I’ll give you a little something as a token of my appreciation.” He patted the plump mouse nestled in his arms.
The mouse seemed to understand human nature, slowly climbing out of the One-Armed Old Man's embrace. It sniffed the air cautiously before squeezing through the iron bars and disappearing into a dark corner. After a while, the sound of its claws scuttling could be heard, and it returned, this time with a hanging nameplate clutched in its mouth.
The One-Armed Old Man took the nameplate from the mouse's jaws and tossed it to Lu Fei Fan. Lu Fei Fan caught it and opened it up to find a military dog tag made of special metal. The name and number on the front had been deliberately ground off, while the back bore a special incantation.
“Gathering energy, must converge its power. Focus your mind and hold your breath, let the energy flow through all veins. With a mighty breath, forge rivers and fill seas…” Lu Fei Fan recited the few lines of incantation. When he finished, he looked up at the One-Armed Old Man.
“Have you memorized it?” the One-Armed Old Man asked, reaching out to take back the nameplate.
Lu Fei Fan nodded; having read it just once, those phrases were already etched in his mind. He had never possessed an exceptional memory before, but these lines seemed particularly easy for him to remember.
The One-Armed Old Man took the nameplate and seriously rubbed it with his mechanical hand. To Lu Fei Fan's surprise, the incantation engraved on the tag was actually worn away by his actions.
“Senior, what…?” Lu Fei Fan looked puzzled. Could this military identity tag belong to the One-Armed Old Man?
“This is an outline of the cultivation incantation from ‘Fu Mai Xi Shu.’ You must practice it diligently…” the One-Armed Old Man replied.
“What!” Lu Fei Fan was momentarily stunned. The few lines he had just memorized were exactly what Duan Zhang wanted from ‘Fu Mai Xi Shu’? But why would the One-Armed Old Man give it to him?
“But didn’t you already give it to Duan Zhang?” Lu Fei Fan recalled that Duan Zhang also had a copy.
“That one was a fake I crafted.” The One-Armed Old Man chuckled mischievously. “I bet he’ll be furious; he might not get any more drinks after this. However, meeting someone like you is fate, so consider this my gift to you.”
“Senior…” Lu Fei Fan wanted to say something but was interrupted by the One-Armed Old Man raising his hand.
“Hold on; don’t rush to refuse. I still need to ask you for a favor once you’re out.” The One-Armed Old Man suddenly requested.
Lu Fei Fan looked at One-armed's sincere pleading gaze and promised, "If I get the chance to go out, I will definitely help."
The old man took out a neatly wrapped item from his pocket, covered in a white handkerchief, and handed it to Lu Fei Fan. "Please help me deliver this to my wife and children."
He then provided an address, which was not far from Turtle Island, on a nearby islet. Lu Fei Fan carefully stored the item and noted down the address.
"Rest assured, senior. I will make sure it gets done."
After that, One-armed seemed to grow weary, waving his hand as if to dismiss him.
"Alright, there's nothing more to discuss. You should head back before Duan Zhang becomes suspicious of you."
Lu Fei Fan observed the old man’s fatigued expression and felt uncertain about how to respond. He couldn't quite express gratitude or respect; instead, he simply bowed to him before stepping out through the iron gate.
"Be cautious of him and those behind him. People like him in this prison are not truly frightening; it's the ones pulling his strings that you should worry about."
In the end, One-armed reminded him from within the cell.
"Thank you, senior. I will come to see you again."
As Lu Fei Fan glanced back at One-armed sitting in front of the chessboard, the old man nodded slightly. Lu Fei Fan turned and left.
Clang—
Once the iron gate closed behind him, One-armed sat at the chessboard, suddenly feeling his face flush bright red. With a cough, he expelled a mouthful of blood mist that splattered onto the chessboard in front of him.
A beam of light streamed through the window, casting a slanting glow on the chessboard, where the stark contrast of black and white was marred by a splash of crimson.
“It’s a good game, but what a pity…” the One-Armed Old Man murmured as he gazed at the board. With great effort, he rose and walked to the bookshelf against the wall. He picked up a book, opened its hidden compartment, and retrieved an old photograph that had yellowed with age.
In the photograph stood a plain-looking young woman beside a child who appeared to be under ten, both smiling warmly.
“If only we could meet again…” The One-Armed Old Man caressed the photo, his voice thick with emotion.
After a long pause, a soft sigh escaped from that corner, and silence enveloped the room once more.
…
After Lu Fei Fan left, he was not taken back to Duan Zhang’s large cell but instead brought to an ordinary solitary confinement cell. Here, he enjoyed much greater freedom, being informed that he had gained privileges such as fresh air, bathing, and even dining in the communal cafeteria for inmates.
Lu Fei Fan paid little mind to this change. Upon returning to his room, he began to practice the techniques from One-Armed Old Man’s “Fu Mai Xi Shu.” The manual detailed the principles of cultivation. Sitting cross-legged in his cell, Lu Fei Fan attempted to gather energy within his limbs and bones according to the teachings. At first, he felt nothing at all; however, gradually, as he focused more intently, he began to sense something.
He became aware of countless red blood cells flowing through his bloodstream—mature cells within the human body. This realization led him to discover other types of cells as well.
These were the blood cells circulating throughout his body like rivers in motion. The platelets in his blood were also one type of cell. Soon after, he felt all the nuclei of his cells operating in a rhythmic manner, generating a unique splitting energy.
He began to refine this splitting energy produced by his cells and gradually concentrated it together. Then he let it flow through the meridians of his limbs and bones. Even so, there was no immediate change. Lu Fei Fan then attempted to infuse this energy into each individual cell one by one!
To his surprise, he discovered that when he refined and injected the energy generated from cell division into the cells, those cells began to undergo transformation and enhancement!
This revelation filled him with excitement. He started cultivating in this manner—refining energy and infusing it into the first cell. Once he reached one hundred energy-infused cells, he distinctly felt that their fragile structure had begun to change subtly; they became smooth and shimmering like energy-coated cell clusters. Lu Fei Fan even tried using the splitting energy to break apart those modified cell clusters and found that their defenses had significantly strengthened. Moreover, the energy refined from division was produced twice as quickly and abundantly compared to ordinary cells.
The energy generated by those modified cells is the Pulse Energy?
Never mind, I'll just cultivate like this; it's beneficial for me in every way. Lu Fei Fan began to immerse himself in the transformation of the cells and the extraction and condensation of the new cells' Pulse Energy.
A quiet morning passed.
When Lu Fei Fan awoke from his meditation, he felt much more refreshed. He looked around and realized he had modified nearly six thousand cells, which was just the beginning. These cells were distributed across both hands. He casually clenched his fingers, and they made a cracking sound like popping beans.
It seems to be effective.
At that moment, a siren from the prison echoed, and many cell doors automatically opened. Even the automatic gate in front of Lu Fei Fan opened, allowing numerous inmates to walk out towards the outside; it was time for their midday break.
The break lasted for two hours, including time for meals at the cafeteria, followed by a period of free time. Lu Fei Fan woke up and joined the crowd of inmates heading out. However, as he exited the corridor, he did not notice that a Gloomy Man was lurking in a dark corner, watching him closely. As soon as Lu Fei Fan stepped outside, the Gloomy Man followed him. As they passed by the entrance, a guard standing nearby discreetly slipped a sharp weapon wrapped in cloth to him when no one was paying attention.
With the Sharp Weapon in hand, the Gloomy Man stepped out of the prison door and closely trailed behind Hua Jun Shao.
