“Boss, big news! Huge news!”
A Teng burst into the hospital room early in the morning, excitedly waving a colorful flyer.
Inside the room, Lu Fei Fan was massaging his father's shoulders. Seeing A Teng's ecstatic expression, reminiscent of a frenzied beast, he frowned. He wasn't in the mood to tease him about anything and simply asked, “What’s going on? Did you sleep with someone else's young wife again?”
“No,” A Teng replied, raising the flyer in his hand. “Take a look at this.”
He handed the flyer over to Lu Fei Fan, who paused his massage to take a closer look. His eyes lit up.
“The annual virtual competition for the ‘Virtual Battlefield,’ developed by Alpha Company and funded by Lodin Group, is about to start! The winning Special Operations Team will receive a portable Superbrain Device for each member, along with a grand prize of... two hundred thousand Federal Coins!” Lu Fei Fan read aloud in one breath, gasping at the enticing prize.
“What do you think? Last year when we played this game, the grand prize was only one hundred thousand. This year it’s gone up to two hundred thousand! Just when Uncle needs a large sum of money for his illness, we might as well try our luck,” A Teng said eagerly, rubbing his hands together.
Lu Fei Fan was quite familiar with the Virtual Battlefield game and considered himself an advanced player. This game was designed to simulate future warfare, combining fighting action with strategic elements. Its realistic experience had attracted fifty million players online at its launch.
Back then, Lu Fei Fan was struggling financially and learned that players could farm items and coins to sell to offline players. So he organized A Teng and Niu Dali to join him in the game. Although they couldn't compete with professional players, the three of them managed to earn a decent amount of items and coins in Virtual Battlefield, which helped improve their living conditions.
However, as professional players flooded in and Lu Fei Fan had to juggle work and studies, he gradually abandoned gaming. The three of them eventually found themselves in an uncertain future in the slaughter industry.
Two hundred thousand was indeed a substantial prize. For a family dealing with a critically ill father, even if it couldn’t cure him, it could allow Hua Feifan's father to be transferred to a better hospital in a big city where medical facilities and personnel were superior.
“Boss, let’s give it our all! Even if we don’t win first place, second place is still one hundred thousand and third place is fifty thousand. Even if we just snag third place, it would improve your family’s finances.”
“Alright, damn it,” Lu Fei Fan said decisively as he slapped his thigh. “Quickly notify Dali; let’s sign up this afternoon.”
A Teng nodded and went out. By the time Hua Fei Fan's Brother and their mother arrived at noon, Lu Fei Fan had finished his instructions. He then led A Teng and Niu Dali to a nearby cheap Virtual Internet Cafe, where they logged into the Virtual Network. They arrived at a magnificent skyscraper on a bustling street in the virtual world, resembling a financial building in a prosperous district. However, Lu Fei Fan knew that this was the unique entrance to the Virtual Battlefield. Once inside the building, they could enter the game world. Today, there was a long line at the entrance, with many staff members attending to eager players signing up.
The person handling registrations was a middle-aged man with a prominent handlebar mustache. It was unclear whether he was a Virtual Intelligence NPC or a real online staff member. He looked at the three of them and asked, "Do you have character IDs created in Virtual Arena?"
"Of course!" the three answered in unison, nodding.
"Great. Please enter your IDs." The man waved his hand casually, and a Light Screen popped up in front of each of them. They quickly entered their IDs, and after the Data Analysis System verified them, the man gestured for them to proceed into the building. The three followed a group of players who had registered before them into one of the elevators in the battlefield building.
At the elevator entrance stood two tall and muscular bodyguards protecting the game’s entry point to prevent virtual hacking. This could be considered one of the essential protective measures in the Virtual Network.
The three stepped into the elevator without any surprise. At that moment, each of their Ocean devices emitted a soft electronic voice.
"Welcome to log into Virtual Battlefield. Please enter your ID and password."
Each of them entered their usual account credentials. Although they stood side by side, soundproofing ensured they couldn't hear each other's IDs—one of the benefits of the virtual world that protected players' privacy. Of course, if they preferred not to use voice input, they could also enter it manually. In this virtual world, everyone had access to a Virtual Screen that made it easy for players to enter games, socialize, or exit this unreal virtual realm.
After successfully entering their passwords, they rode up in the elevator. There were already seven or eight others waiting inside. Once all three were aboard, the elevator smoothly ascended for about a minute before suddenly stopping.
"Welcome back to Virtual Battlefield."
The elevator doors slowly opened, and as everyone stepped out, they were greeted by a scene shrouded in dark red haze. The sky was filled with leaden clouds intermittently flashing with fierce lightning bolts. Higher up, meteorites billowed smoke as they fell, crashing onto the ground and causing explosive tremors that added flames to an already devastated landscape.
This was a game world rife with war—a battlefield where the backdrop of Virtual Arena drew inspiration from that apocalyptic reality. Thus, it was a barren land filled with conflict and strife.
The group standing at the elevator entrance was fully armed, transformed into characters from the game. Each person wore different armor; for instance, Niu Dali was clad in all-black armor, towering over two and a half meters tall, his massive frame resembling that of a giant bear. He carried a heavy-duty Energy Cannon on his shoulder, with two loops of bullet chains wrapped around his armor. At his waist hung two large-caliber electromagnetic pistols, formidable weapons in their own right, and strapped to his back was a Battle Axe. It was clear that his character was meant to be a heavy tank.
A Teng donned blue armor, standing at around two meters tall. He held an enhanced Energy Submachine Gun and had various electromagnetic Hand Grenades hanging from his waist. His belt also sported an electromagnetic pistol and a vibrating electromagnetic blade. His character was clearly designed as a frontline assault soldier.
Lu Fei Fan's armor appeared much lighter and simpler. He held a long-barreled Energy Sniper Rifle aloft with one hand. Besides an electromagnetic dagger and an Energy Pistol at his waist, his equipment was relatively minimal. However, the Sniper Rifle in his hands was the most lethal weapon of all, as Lu Fei Fan was the sniper of the group.
Virtual Battlefield featured several classes: Assault Soldier, Heavy Tank, Sniper, Driver, and Combat Medic. Apart from the first three classes, Drivers could operate aircraft, tanks, and armored vehicles within the game—a popular choice among players. The Combat Medic role was also vital, responsible for healing injured players on the battlefield and considered a rare support class.
Then there were the game character names… After all, one couldn’t use their real name in a virtual world. Many players created unique names for their characters. For instance, Lu Fei Fan chose the name "Rascal," while Niu Dali, spurred on by Lu Fei Fan, opted for an outrageously aggressive name—"Blast Ass Steel Cannon," completely abandoning any sense of dignity.
A Teng took a more dubious route with his name—"Silver Gun Overlord," aiming to conquer all the female players in the game.
If anyone thought these three character names were memorable, they would be mistaken; one could easily find accounts of their exploits on any gaming forum. These names were undoubtedly among the most shameless in gaming history. Furthermore, their creation of the "Playboy Special Operations Team" had gained infamy because many female players had been teased by these three rascals.
As soon as the trio logged in, the world channel of Virtual Battlefield erupted with excitement!
“Hey! Isn’t that the most handsome Trump Card sniper ‘Rascal’? Long time no see!”
“Without Violent Lord around, Virtual Battlefield has been so dull! Finally, it’s lively again!”
“Rascal! I thought you’d lost your vigor and faded away! But here you are today, still full of spirit—truly the pillar of our unruly and shameless cult!”
This was a gathering of like-minded individuals exchanging lewd banter; they were essentially complimenting each other in increasingly absurd ways to elevate their shamelessness. Of course, Lu Fei Fan’s appearance also drew reactions from others—both angry players among them.
“Rascal! Get out here! I’ve heard you’ve been harassing good women—I challenge you to a duel!”
"You finally showed up! Hurry up and die! Last time you dared to touch my backside, I'm going to blast you to smithereens with an electromagnetic cannon!"
"You deadbeat, took you so long to crawl back, did you forget about me while you were off flirting with some vixen?"
"Rascal, you son of a b*tch, last time you teamed up to mess with my gear, I curse your whole family to die…"
There was also panic and unease, followed by many logging off.
"What! Rascal is online? Honey, log off quickly, don’t let that rogue take advantage!"
"Sis, that scoundrel is here, let’s get out of here before he sets his sights on us!"
"Quickly, sister! I’ll hold him off and sacrifice myself! Hey, Rascal-kun, come here, let me teach you a lesson."
"…"
Faced with these overly excited players who went wild the moment they saw him online, Lu Fei Fan fully understood what it meant to be a tall tree attracting the wind. The chat channel in Virtual Battlefield was now a chaotic mess, resembling a bustling market.
Of course, many players were discussing Niu Dali and A Teng, such as:
"What? Blast Ass Steel Cannon is here?" That tall Armored Warrior covered his backside with both hands after logging off. Although the Consciousness interface in Virtual Battlefield didn’t cause real pain, this action showed just how deep the shadow Niu Dali had cast over him.
"This guy always likes to attack from behind; it’s so unethical!"
"Yeah, every time he just rushes in from behind for a cheap shot; it’s so low…"
Niu Dali, uninterested in their chatter, shouted in the chat channel, "Looking for a wife! Big butt, flirty, ready to get married in the game..."
This statement immediately drew the ire of countless players, who began to criticize him. However, Niu Dali remained unfazed and repeated his call several times, much like a routine announcement whenever a woman had her monthly cycle.
Meanwhile, A Teng jumped into the game and started flirting with various game mistresses, not caring whether they were cross-dressers or effeminate men. Lu Fei Fan and Niu Dali had warned him not to mess around in the game, but A Teng insisted on pursuing every opportunity, determined not to miss out.
A Teng's long-time partner in Virtual Battlefield was an enchanting character named 'Feng Sao Niang Zi,' a battlefield medic. So when A Teng, Lu Fei Fan, and Niu Dali teamed up, they often included her in their party for support during missions. However, Lu Fei Fan could hardly tolerate their flirtations; they acted like a pair of scandalous lovers. Sometimes he wished he could take them out with a single shot for the greater good.
The trio hadn't played the game in a long time. If it weren't for the upcoming prize competition hosted by Lodin Group, Lu Fei Fan, Niu Dali, and A Teng would have almost forgotten about it.
Lu Fei Fan inquired about the competition details; it wouldn't officially start for another ten days. The rules stated that each team must have its own Special Operations Team consisting of five members to participate. Currently, players were busy recruiting members to form their teams, while those already established were training intensely to improve their synergy.
The Playboy's Special Operations Team had brought A Teng along with his flirtatious partner. As things stood, they were still in need of a strong melee fighter. A Teng and Niu Dali were both formidable in terms of firepower, and the battlefield medic could serve as support for A Teng's partner. Despite her flirtatious nature, she was quite effective in healing; Lu Fei Fan had experienced her efficiency firsthand during dungeon runs and knew she wouldn't let the team down.
Thus, Lu Fei Fan decided to browse the leaderboard for potential candidates to join their Special Operations Team. Just then, someone suddenly shouted in the game world channel.
