This person was naturally his father.
Yes, his father, in his youth, was also a notorious womanizer and a thief. However, after marrying Hua Fei Fan's mother, he retired from the underworld and washed his hands of such activities. Little did he know that a few years later, Lu Fei Fan was born, ensuring that the legacy would continue.
As the saying goes, like father, like son; a mouse is born to dig holes. Whatever kind of rogue one is, naturally, they will have a son who is just as unruly.
Thus, at a young age of four or five, Lu Fei Fan became the next infamous panty thief on Turtle Island after his father—a perverted lecher known for his shameless antics such as peeping while others bathed and lifting skirts. The tales of his misdeeds were endless among the aunties at the local market.
Lu Fei Fan walked into the uniquely fenced garden of their home.
“Old ghost, I’m back!” he shouted as he entered the courtyard.
After a while with no response from inside, he muttered to himself, wondering if they had gone out drinking again.
“Mom, your son is back!” he called out again, but still no one answered. Just then, their neighbor Wang Da Shen happened to pass by. Seeing Lu Fei Fan standing in the courtyard with groceries in hand, he hurried over.
“Hey, isn’t this Fei Fan? Why are you just getting back? Your dad is in big trouble! Why are you still here? Hurry to the hospital!” Wang Da Shen urged anxiously.
What? It felt like a thunderbolt had struck Lu Fei Fan’s world; the groceries he was holding fell to the ground.
“What happened to my dad?” Lu Fei Fan rushed forward and grabbed Wang Da Shen’s hand, asking urgently.
“Hey, how would I know?” Wang Da Shen was startled and took two steps back. He looked at Lu Fei Fan, realizing that he too was struggling to accept that his father was ill. He waved his hand and said, “Anyway, you should hurry to the hospital. I heard it’s serious.”
“Thank you, Aunt Wang.” Before he could finish speaking, Lu Fei Fan had already dashed out of the yard and was running toward the hospital.
The civilian hospital on Turtle Island had limited conditions and outdated equipment. The medical staff's skills could not compare to those of hospitals in larger cities. However, for the residents of a Civilian Island like Turtle Island, it was considered a decent hospital. Despite being part of the Free Federation's healthcare system, they still faced heavy burdens from medical expenses for serious illnesses. The exorbitant costs at large hospitals were simply unaffordable for these common folks seeking treatment.
Lu Fei Fan arrived at the hospital and asked the nurse at the front desk for his father's ward.
“Mom.” Lu Fei Fan hurried into the room where his father was, only to see his mother bending over, wiping his father's body with a towel. She paused for a moment and turned to see Lu Fei Fan entering, her eyes reddening.
“Fei Fan, you... why are you back?” His mother asked, looking at her anxious son.
“How is Dad? What happened? How did he suddenly fall ill? Didn’t he have a thorough check-up last year? He seemed perfectly fine then.” Lu Fei Fan bombarded her with questions.
His heart ached as he approached his father’s bedside. The man lay there with a breathing apparatus, his breaths relatively steady. Various monitors beeped beside him, keeping a twenty-four-hour watch. Lu Fei Fan looked at his father, who was peacefully asleep, and felt a wave of sorrow wash over him. This man had weathered many storms, providing for the family through fishing and hunting. He had always been the pillar of their household, and now that pillar had crumbled, leaving his mother in distress.
Although Lu Fei Fan was a traveler from another world, this man had raised him for over a decade. No matter how rebellious he had been in his youth, his father always greeted him with a warm smile and rough hands that would pat him affectionately while trying to coax him into behaving. After growing up and going off to school, their time together had diminished significantly. Now, seeing the deepening wrinkles and the increasing strands of white in his father’s short hair made him realize just how much older he had become.
The more he thought about it, the sadder he felt. But he couldn’t cry; with his father down, his mother was on the brink of collapse. As the eldest son, he had to be strong and shoulder the responsibility to spare his fragile mother further pain.
Seeing Lu Fei Fan standing silently by the bed made his mother choke back tears as she said, “Your dad was repairing a boat with some men when suddenly a Sea Monster surged into the harbor and struck their vessel. Your dad fell off the boat and hit his head on the deck... he’s been unconscious ever since.”
With that, she began to cry uncontrollably.
“Brother.” A tall, thin young man with dark skin entered from outside; it was Lu Fei Fan’s younger brother—Hua Jun Tang. He had dropped out of school early because he didn’t like studying and had stayed home to help their father with odd jobs to support the family.
Lu Fei Fan noticed that Hua Jun Tang was holding a thermos; he must have just returned from getting food for their parents. His face looked weary as well; it was clear that without Lu Fei Fan at home, his brother had been under significant pressure. If not for him comforting their mother, she might have already broken down emotionally.
Lu Fei Fan patted his brother on the shoulder and sighed deeply, suppressing his own sadness as he tried to comfort their mother.
“Mom, don’t cry. My brother and I will support you; just take care of yourself and Dad.” Then he turned to Hua Jun Tang and asked, “What’s Dad’s condition right now? What did the doctor say?”
“He has a skull fracture that has been repaired, but there’s bleeding in his brain. They’ve already done drainage surgery; we don’t know when he’ll wake up. The doctor said we can only wait for a miracle…”
Lu Fei Fan felt suffocated inside as he clenched his fists. If only he could take on this family’s burdens himself, perhaps this accident wouldn’t have happened, and his father wouldn’t be lying here in critical condition—whether or not he would wake up was now left to fate…
After a long while…
“Wait for me, I need to make a call.” Lu Fei Fan suddenly remembered that A Teng's uncle seemed to work at this hospital.
Lu Fei Fan found a public phone in the hospital and dialed A Teng, who answered the phone sounding out of breath. However, Lu Fei Fan wasn't in the mood to tease him; instead, he got straight to the point. “A Teng, my dad is hospitalized. I heard your uncle is a doctor. What department is he in? What? Neurology? Alright, I’ll wait for you.”
After hanging up, he returned to the ward to comfort his mother and asked her about his father's condition in detail.
After some time, A Teng rushed over with Niu Dali. Without waiting for any pleasantries, they handed Lu Fei Fan a paper bag.
“Here.” A Teng said.
Lu Fei Fan took it and opened the bag to find several stacks of cash inside, all in Free Federation currency.
“What… where did you guys get this money?” Lu Fei Fan looked at the two of them. Their families weren't exactly wealthy, but they were slightly better off than his. Usually, Dali and A Teng even worked alongside him to pay off debts, and several times he had helped A Teng with his gambling debts.
“Don’t worry, this is just a little pocket money we asked from our dads. It’s not much, but it should cover the medical expenses for now,” A Teng reassured him, sensing his concern about borrowing from loan sharks.
“Okay, if it’s not enough, we’ll think of something else,” Niu Dali said as he arrived after hearing about Hua Feifan's father’s illness.
Seeing these two friends who were willing to gather money for him without hesitation moved Lu Fei Fan deeply. True friends are revealed in times of trouble; they were far better than those relatives who ignored him after learning about his father's serious illness.
Before long, a bald man wearing large glasses entered the room—A Teng's uncle, a middle-aged man. He was accompanied by the attending physician who was treating Hua Feifan's father.
“Uncle,” A Teng greeted the bald man, who nodded in acknowledgment before examining Hua Feifan's father and discussing his condition with the attending physician. Lu Fei Fan and his mother could only listen quietly from the side; it was clear that the doctor respected A Teng's uncle greatly.
After the attending physician left, A Teng's uncle looked at Hua Feifan's father and sighed.
“If you had let me know earlier, there might have been a way to treat him. But now that the craniotomy has been performed and it didn’t go very smoothly—though some blood has been cleared—there are still small amounts that need time to be absorbed. The residual cerebrospinal fluid could worsen his condition due to brain herniation… I’m afraid there’s nothing more I can do unless…” A Teng's uncle paused.
Feeling as if he had fallen into an ice pit, Lu Fei Fan suddenly grasped onto a glimmer of hope and quickly stood up to ask, “Unless what?”
“Unless we can get the Jinwu Holy Blood Pill; perhaps there’s a slim chance for improvement. Otherwise, your father like this might only last another six months…” A Teng's uncle said gravely.
“‘Jinwu Holy Blood Pill’?” Lu Fei Fan murmured the name of the medicine. “May I ask where I can buy this ‘Jinwu Holy Blood Pill’?”
A Teng Uncle glanced at A Teng and Niu Dali, then spoke candidly, “The Free Federation Fuser official website sells it, but the price is… one billion!”
“One billion!?” Lu Fei Fan gasped, horrified by the staggering amount.
“Yes, it is considered a miraculous medicine. For someone with brain damage, it can restore brain cells and neural function. Even those with severe internal injuries on the brink of death can be revived by taking this ‘Jinwu Holy Blood Pill’. If your father can get this pill, there’s an eighty to ninety percent chance he will survive and wake up. But this medicine… is just too expensive. I once treated a businessman who had a stroke. Just as he was about to die, his son managed to buy him a ‘Jinwu Holy Blood Pill’, and he recovered. However, they had to sell everything they owned to afford it.”
After finishing, A Teng Uncle patted Lu Fei Fan on the shoulder and temporarily left the hospital room to discuss some matters with the doctors in the department. He had seen too much of life and death; he was just a doctor who could only do his best in diagnosis and treatment. Beyond his capabilities, he felt powerless. After all, his salary as a doctor wasn’t high, and he truly was a moral physician, unlike some unethical doctors who would do anything for profit without considering the feelings of patients and their families.
A Teng and Niu Dali were at a loss for how to comfort Lu Fei Fan.
Lu Fei Fan’s mother was crying helplessly, unsure of what to do. His younger brother sat silently beside their father’s bed, his expression grave.
“‘Jinwu Holy Blood Pill’, ‘Jinwu Holy Blood Pill’…” Lu Fei Fan repeated the name of the billion-dollar miracle drug obsessively. Finally, gritting his teeth and clenching his fists, he declared, “No matter the cost, I will get this medicine!”
