The three of them ultimately could not escape the fate of being expelled from the academy. They were caught cheating during their makeup exams by the invigilator, leading to their scores being nullified and their eligibility for retaking the exams revoked. In a fit of anger, they decided to launch a nighttime raid on the document storage room where the files were kept. In a fit of madness, they somehow acquired explosives and blew open the door that secured the students' graduation records, causing quite a commotion.
Despite their meticulous escape plan, they could not evade the military police of the Free Federation, which even deployed Special Police units. In the end, the academy expelled them without offering any chance to retake their studies. Furthermore, they ended up with a "glorious" criminal record for attempting to blow up the school, making it impossible for them to find work without a diploma from Free Federation Academy. Left with no other choice, they had to start working temporary jobs to make ends meet.
As night fell, stars twinkled in the sky, reflecting on the tranquil surface of the sea, resembling a magnificent galaxy that had descended upon the water.
Near the island region fully occupied by Free Federation Academy lay a bustling commercial district filled with shops and throngs of people. At night, it was particularly lively, known as Midnight Street—the academy's never-sleeping hub. Compared to the monotonous and artistic architectural style of Free Federation Academy, this area was far more vibrant and commercial, with its diverse buildings creating a unique landscape.
The streets were lined with various commercial establishments and residential buildings, surrounded by large housing areas. The real estate here was quite expensive due to its proximity to schools. In this oceanic world of islands, land was even more precious; only those with substantial financial means could afford to buy land and build homes.
At this moment, as night had just fallen, it marked the beginning of bustling street activity. The flow of people thickened, lights illuminated every corner, and vendors shouted their wares amidst a cacophony of noise—creating a lively atmosphere. From above, this entire area resembled a dazzling light mirror floating on the sea at night; hence it was aptly named Nightlight District.
The proximity of Nightlight District to Pandora's Box contributed to its vibrancy and prosperity. Many students from Pandora's Box started businesses here after graduation, becoming various commercial legends associated with Pandora's Box.
Thus, the predominant demographic in this area consisted of students and residents from nearby neighborhoods. Without the thousands of students from Pandora's Box driving activity here, Nightlight District would not have enjoyed its sleepless nights and constant hustle.
In the heart of this bustling district filled with people, in an alleyway by an energy transmission pole plastered with all sorts of unremovable advertisements reminiscent of ancient times, three shady young men gathered around. They were perusing these outdated promotional flyers as if studying them.
"Special treatment for all kinds of male impotence—one hundred and three treatments for immediate results; regain your manly vigor..."
"Various lubricants for sale: ancient Indian oils, Greek olive oil, canola oil—perfect for all uses; let this brand accompany you for life..."
"Specializing in fake certificates—if it's not real, you don't pay; prices negotiable—contact us if interested..."
"Tsk tsk tsk! Look at these ads—they're so tacky! No creativity whatsoever," remarked one of them—the leader of Free Federation Academy's notorious trio and a notorious troublemaker known as Extraordinary Student.
After he finished evaluating the advertisement on the utility pole while stroking his chin, he glanced around to ensure no one was watching. Seizing the moment, he swiftly picked up a brush and made a clean swipe across the pile of flyers, then with a swift motion, he slapped a brand new advertisement on top.
“Look at this! Now that’s what I call advertising!” Lu Fei Fan boasted without even looking back at Niu Dali and A Teng, seemingly quite confident about the content of the ad he had just posted.
Curious, Niu Dali and A Teng leaned in to examine the freshly posted flyer. However, as soon as they got a closer look, their jaws nearly dropped in shock.
“Boss, this advertisement... something seems off...” Niu Dali hesitantly pointed out after confirming it wasn’t the ad they intended to post.
“Impossible! Let me see…” Lu Fei Fan quickly turned around to check. What he saw written on it was…
“Looking for male escorts, Five-Star Sailing Hotel job available. Full benefits, weekends off, generous pay with commissions! Strong and fit candidates with good appearance preferred!” A Teng read the entire ad aloud, sounding impressed as he considered whether he should sign up immediately.
“Oh no, this is wrong! Not this one, not this one…” Lu Fei Fan exclaimed in a panic as he fumbled to pull out another brand new flyer, eager to cover up the previous ad to hide his earlier thoughts of signing up.
But little did he know that the new flyer he just put up was…
“Lonely Women at Night seeking kindred spirits. Open for conversation, can wear various outfits, reasonable prices accepted… Contact information:… Wow, this one seems pretty enticing!” A Teng exclaimed after reading it and immediately thought about calling.
“Ahem, it seems like this isn’t the right one either…” Lu Fei Fan realized in shock that he had made another mistake. He frantically searched through his pockets and pulled out yet another flyer. Upon opening it, he found it read: “Ancestral Secret Recipe cures all kinds of Syphilitic Hemorrhoids Male Disease. Contact information…”
“Boss, you…” Niu Dali looked at the contents of this flyer with astonishment; it contained quite a lot of information that required some serious processing.
“Not this one either. Strange, where did our flyers go…” He continued rummaging through various pockets filled with flyers—there were at least a dozen of them—most likely taken down when the other two weren’t paying attention. This left Niu Dali and A Teng with endless speculation about whether Lu Fei Fan was there to post ads or to seek them out instead.
After quite some time…
“Ah, found it.” Lu Fei Fan seemed to hold up a piece of his dignity as he unfolded a crumpled advertisement, smoothed it out, and slapped it against the wall with a flourish. “Look at this, now that’s what I call advertising and appeal.”
“Bawang Slaughterhouse, specializing in the slaughter and processing of various animals, offering breeding and castration services at fair prices, honest dealings for all. Large orders come with a complimentary ticket to the Circus for a stripping performer—first come, first served, while supplies last. Contact information…”
After confirming everything was in order, Lu Fei Fan let out a sigh. In front of these two idiots, he felt like his reputation was completely ruined. However, he quickly prepared various excuses to deflect attention from the advertisements that had mysteriously appeared in his pocket. But Niu Dali had a different question.
“Boss, aren’t we just part-time slaughterers? When did we start doing ‘breeding’ too?” Niu Dali asked, puzzled.
“Hey, business is tough these days. The Iron Rooster has spoken; if we can’t pull in more work, we’ll have to pack up and leave. If someone really wants breeding services for livestock, let A Teng handle it!” Lu Fei Fan explained with a resigned look as he stroked his chin.
Niu Dali glanced over at A Teng, who was still fixated on an advertisement that read ‘Seeking Soulmates, Various Custom Outfits Available,’ muttering to himself while jotting down the contact details with a lewd grin on his face. He looked like trouble waiting to happen.
This made Lu Fei Fan and Niu Dali shudder in disgust. Finally, Lu Fei Fan slapped A Teng on the back of the head to snap him back to reality and ordered him.
“Stop staring at the ads! Hurry up and finish sticking these flyers from the Iron Rooster, then we need to get back to the Slaughterhouse. The Iron Rooster is timing us; if we’re late, our pay will be docked.”
With that, the three quickly dispersed, each grabbing a stack of Bawang Slaughterhouse flyers and began their frantic sticking spree.
Half an hour later, they had plastered their flyers everywhere they could—some places suitable and others not so much. A Teng even mistakenly slapped one onto a hefty woman’s backside and was chased down the street by a group of angry ladies wielding brooms.
Once they finished their outrageous flyer distribution, the trio swaggered back into the bustling market crowd and returned to their usual night job at Bawang Slaughterhouse!
Lu Fei Fan and Niu Dali came from humble beginnings; their families weren’t well-off, so they had to work part-time jobs to pay for their studies at Free Federation Academy. A Teng’s family was slightly better off than theirs but still not wealthy. It was precisely because the three shared a carefree spirit and similar interests that they ended up working together in this lowly job. Throughout their school years, they had taken on numerous jobs to improve their living conditions.
If one were to compare resumes, Lu Fei Fan, Niu Dali, and A Teng had quite colorful work histories: they had moved bricks, cleaned floors, served drinks, even started a business selling inflatable dolls of scantily clad women. They had smuggled various flavors of adult DVDs and sacrificed their appearances as nude models for art. They even formed a band but only ever got hired for funeral music gigs before ultimately disbanding—though they could say they sold their talents; they just hadn’t gone so far as to sell themselves.
Of course, when the three of them were on the brink of poverty, Lu Fei Fan and A Teng had once suggested becoming "ducks," but Niu Dali, that stubborn virgin, refused vehemently. He insisted on preserving his chastity at all costs, which ultimately led to the proposal falling through.
As fate would have it, the three of them had become good brothers who shared hardships together.
Now, they had been working part-time at a meat processing plant called Bawang Slaughterhouse for over half a year, primarily engaged in the slaughter and processing of various livestock. In simpler terms, they were part-time butchers.
Recently, due to poor business performance at the Slaughterhouse, the manager sent the three of them—who were skilled at advertising—to post flyers everywhere in hopes of attracting more customers.
The scale of the Slaughterhouse was not large; even with Lu Fei Fan and his companions, there were only about seven or eight employees during busy times. Nearby, there were several other slaughterhouses of similar type that were more established and better equipped, making for fierce competition.
The three of them entered the stench-filled slaughterhouse workshop with ease and headed straight for the office. The slaughtering area was occasionally filled with a heavy stench and the smell of blood. If they weren't used to it by now, they would have likely vomited. Typically, what was slaughtered here wasn't just simple livestock like pigs, poultry, or sheep; it included ferocious Ocean Beasts.
Thus, the processing procedures were much more complicated and carried certain dangers. Lu Fei Fan had once witnessed a Sea Beast as large as a lion, resembling an octopus, injure one of the butchers by swallowing him whole with its tentacle. By the time they managed to kill that Sea Beast sent for slaughter, that butcher had already lost his life.
In this era, it was either humans eating Sea Beasts or Sea Beasts eating humans.
This was a world of scarce resources—a tumultuous time where survival was anything but easy!
