Xu Yi felt a surge of complex emotions upon hearing Jian Chen's words. She had once deeply loved Jian Chen, but past hurts had hardened her heart. She took a deep breath, trying to make her voice sound calm. "Jian Chen, I understand your feelings," Xu Yi spoke softly, her voice carrying a barely perceptible tremor, "but those past events, they cannot be simply explained away." Jian Chen's expression stiffened slightly as he looked into Xu Yi's eyes, trying to find a glimmer of hope. However, Xu Yi's gaze was firm and resolute, leaving him with a sense of despair.
"I know I have done many wrong things that have hurt you," Jian Chen's tone was full of regret, "but I truly regret it, and I hope to have the chance to make amends."
Xu Yi shook her head gently, took a deep breath, and made her voice sound more resolute.
"Jian Chen, the past between us cannot be changed," she said slowly. "I admit that I still need time to heal those wounds. And I am no longer the same innocent me. What I need is a new beginning, not to linger in the shadows of the past."
Jian Chen's eyes flashed with a hint of disappointment, but he still tried to maintain his composure. He understood that Xu Yi's decision was unchangeable.
"I understand how you feel," he said softly. "I won't push you to accept me anymore. But I hope we can stay in touch."
Xu Yi nodded, looking into Jian Chen's eyes and feeling a hint of warmth. Although she had rejected Jian Chen's confession, she didn't want to lose a former friend because of it.
"I don't think we need to keep in touch, as there probably won't be much contact in the future," she said with a smile. "But I hope we can both respect each other's choices and decisions."
Jian Chen nodded, a hint of disappointment flashing in his eyes. He understood Xu Yi's position and respected her decision. The relationship between them had indeed undergone an irreversible change. Even though he still felt unwilling in his heart, he could only accept the reality.
"Alright, I will respect your choice," Jian Chen's voice was somewhat low, but he tried to appear strong. "If you ever need any help in the future, or just want to talk, I'll be here."
Xu Yi smiled lightly, knowing Jian Chen's kindness and sincerity, but what she needed more now was independence and growth.
"Thank you," she said sincerely, "I believe we will both find the person who belongs to us."
As the night grew darker, the school's streetlights illuminated their path. After walking side by side for a while, they each headed towards their own dormitories.
Xu Yi feels a bit heavy-hearted, but she knows that this is the necessary path to growth. She will let go of the past burdens and bravely face the future.
Meanwhile, Jian Chen silently returns to his own dorm room, sitting on the edge of the bed, recalling his conversation with Xu Yi.
He knows that although his confession failed this time, it has also made him more aware of his feelings. He will continue to strive to become a better version of himself and wait for the next opportunity.
Time passes slowly, Xu Yi and Jian Chen have each started a new life. They are working hard and growing in different fields. Although their paths are different, they both believe that as long as they persist in their dreams, they will eventually find their own way.
