Even if Su Xing did not vent her anger, Lawrence would still seek out He Xiaoqing. However, Shen Jingyu could not make such a judgment regarding matters between the elders, especially when it involved emotions; those things were always complicated.
"I've arranged for someone to protect Auntie back home. You don’t need to worry about that. As for everything else, we can talk about it when we get back," he said.
Su Xing nodded in agreement. She needed to find a way to delve deeper into those matters concerning her mother; otherwise, she wouldn’t dare to bring them up. "Let's eat first. Honestly, I think Lawrence isn’t bad-looking. If it weren't for the dangerous aura surrounding him, I might even suggest him to my mom."
Shen Jingyu felt a jolt of irritation at Su Xing's casual remark. Matters involving the elders should not be meddled with! His tone remained serious.
Su Xing casually tossed her thick hair and replied, "I know my mom only has my dad in her heart; she hasn’t forgotten him all these years. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have refused Uncle Chi’s help during the toughest times."
Shen Jingyu raised an eyebrow; this woman seemed willing to share everything when she was unguarded. They finished dinner quickly and helped each other with their medications before finally having a moment to rest.
Su Xing stared in confusion as he carried her back to the large bed in the bedroom. After setting her down, he made no move to leave. "Shen Jingyu, what do you mean by this?"
She looked bewildered at the man sitting across from her.
Shen Jingyu replied smoothly, "I am your fiancé. In a foreign land, after you’ve just endured such hardships, it’s only natural for me to stay by your side."
"What fiancé?" Su Xing was taken aback.
"Until we get our marriage certificate, I suppose I am still your fiancé. But I wouldn’t mind if you called me husband instead," he said without missing a beat, further complicating Su Xing’s already muddled thoughts.
Shen Jingyu continued to remind her, "Haven't we already expressed our feelings? Now you can start exercising your rights as my fiancée. I promise to cooperate fully."
"Then you should leave. I want to sleep alone," Su Xing quickly retorted. Wasn’t he supposed to listen to her?
Shen Jingyu seemed to have anticipated her response: "This villa has only one bed; the other rooms are functional and cannot accommodate anyone overnight. Besides, I'm injured—can you really bear to let me sleep on the sofa or outside?"
"Look at you, acting all innocent—aren't you ashamed?" Su Xing thought she was losing this battle yet again.
"I can sleep on the floor or the sofa if that’s what it takes," she insisted. "In any case, this situation is unclear; we can't just start living together like this."
Before Ke Su Xing could finish speaking, Shen Jingyu interjected, "Qin Yi said that while my wounds are superficial and haven't required stitches, there's still a risk of infection. I need to find some serum tomorrow to eliminate that risk. I could develop a fever at any moment."
"So what? Are you blaming me for not taking care of you with that accusatory look?"
"I'm not afraid of you getting a fever, but I'm worried about you getting restless," Su Xing muttered before resigning herself to lie down, pulling the blanket over her head and completely avoiding his gaze.
Shen Jingyu couldn't help but laugh at her words. They were both adults; having a few flirtatious thoughts was perfectly normal. However, this wasn't the right moment for it.
Not bothering to dwell on Su Xing's comment, Shen Jingyu lay down beside her, wrapping his arms around her through the blanket and whispering in her ear, "If I had no feelings for you at all, you'd have reason to cry! But given the circumstances, it's not appropriate for anything to happen. I just want to hold you."
With those words, Su Xing found it hard to refuse him, feeling as if she had been the only one overthinking things all along.
Feeling awkward, Su Xing wanted to say something more, but as Shen Jingyu drew closer, his warm breath against her ear and the soothing rhythm of his heartbeat enveloped her. She soon drifted into a deep sleep.
After days of torment, she had finally endured through it all. However, the nightmares from her near-death experience surged back like a tidal wave.
In the middle of the night, Su Xing suddenly began to sob and struggled awake, flailing her arms as she sat up and shouted, "A Yu! Don't go over there! No!"
"It's okay, Xingxing. I'm here. We've come back; I'm right by your side. Don't be afraid!"
Shen Jingyu seemed to have anticipated this moment. As soon as Su Xing was startled awake by her nightmare, he immediately rose to comfort her. It was precisely because he expected this situation that he insisted on staying by her side.
Under Shen Jingyu's soothing touch, Su Xing gradually calmed down. He held her shoulders gently, running his palm along her shoulder and arm in an attempt to ease her tension.
"A Yu..." Su Xing turned with tear-filled eyes and met Shen Jingyu's pained gaze.
She then threw herself into his embrace, her tears quickly soaking his chest. He continued to reassure her, "I'm here! I've always been here."
"You left me... For so long I thought you'd never come back."
"Actually, I never did."
He gently said, "I will never leave you again, will I?" His voice was soft as he comforted Su Xing, a tone he had never used before, carrying a hint of youthful innocence.
"That's what you said," Su Xing replied, unwilling to let go of him.
"Yes, it's a promise. As long as I am alive, I will never betray you."
Su Xing quietly nestled her head into his embrace again. However, she soon sensed something unusual; his body temperature seemed unusually high.
"Are you really running a fever? Do you feel unwell anywhere else? How's your wound?"
Su Xing quickly lifted her head to wipe away her tears and then reached up to touch Shen Jingyu's forehead. The heat radiating from him was alarming.
"I... I should take you to the hospital! Do you have a thermometer? We need to check it first!"
Su Xing was clearly flustered.
But Shen Jingyu pulled her back, making her sit beside him. "It's two in the morning; there's no need to fuss. Qin Yi anticipated this situation. Just take some medicine and let him check it in the morning."
Shen Jingyu's face was flushed abnormally, and he appeared utterly exhausted. Su Xing felt a sense of urgency but also found it hard to believe in Qin Yi’s abilities.
That kid looks so young; is he really a miracle doctor?
Shen Jingyu smiled lightly, "Absolutely! When he was ten years old, he performed the most difficult surgery in the world—and succeeded. His medical credentials were awarded by the state. So, my fiancée, could you please fetch me some medicine to take? Then stay with me for a while?"
At that moment, she had no time to ponder the implications of that title.
Su Xing went to retrieve the unknown potion that Qin Yi had sent over that night and handed it to Shen Jingyu, anxiously watching him swallow it down.
The hours passed slowly for Su Xing as she counted down to morning. Shen Jingyu's fever raged fiercely throughout the night, recurring twice and even causing him to speak incoherently at times. Yet he insisted on not letting Su Xing take him out to find a doctor. All she could do was endure until six in the morning.
Watching Shen Jingyu suffer like that made her want nothing more than to go out and bang on Qin Yi's door.
At six-thirty, Su Xing heard a knock at the door. She hurriedly ran out to open it, and there stood Luo Hao along with Qin Yi.
