Chen Moxuan rode a Spirit Horse towards the border. However, as he stealthily returned to the city, he sensed that something was amiss.
The border city still stood tall and imposing, but the guards on the walls had multiplied several times over, their eyes betraying a mix of vigilance and unease. The townspeople appeared anxious, with various rumors circulating in the marketplace, claiming that the Azure Wolf Kingdom was gathering its Army, preparing to launch an attack on this land.
Chen Moxuan furrowed his brow; he had thought that after the previous battle, the Azure Wolf Kingdom would be more subdued. Yet it seemed that they had not become cautious despite Da Ao Kingdom obtaining the Divine Weapon. He decided to enter a tavern to gather more information from the locals.
Inside the tavern, voices were raised in a cacophony of discussion, with everyone talking about the threat posed by the Azure Wolf Kingdom.
"I heard that their Army is already at our doorstep; can our soldiers hold them off?" an elderly man asked anxiously.
"Who knows? Di Sha Jiang Jun has been much more irritable lately; he flies into rages at the slightest provocation. What are we going to do about that?" another replied.
"How do you know?"
"I saw it with my own eyes!" The man insisted, eager to lend credibility to his words. "Just outside the general's residence, I witnessed him berating his subordinates for no apparent reason."
Some speculated, "Perhaps it's because of the pressure from the enemy kingdom's impending invasion."
After listening to these rumors, Chen Moxuan chose not to return immediately to find Chen Feng but instead prepared to visit Di Sha Jiang Jun. He remembered that the law book was still in Di Sha Jiang Jun's possession. This sudden change could very well be influenced by other factors.
Di Sha Jiang Jun's residence was located in the heart of the city. Upon arriving at the front gate, Chen Moxuan found it tightly shut and heavily guarded. After announcing his identity, he was finally allowed entry.
The interior of the residence was eerily quiet as Chen Moxuan made his way through the corridor to Di Sha Jiang Jun's study. The door was slightly ajar, and he could hear Di Sha Jiang Jun's furious voice from within.
"How can you not even handle such trivial matters? What use is it for me to support you!" Di Sha Jiang Jun roared.
Chen Moxuan pushed open the door and saw Di Sha Jiang Jun standing before his desk, his face contorted with rage. Papers were strewn across the floor, clearly having been swept off in a fit of anger.
"What happened, Di Sha Jiang Jun?" Chen Moxuan asked.
Di Sha Jiang Jun glanced at him, and in an instant, his anger dissipated, replaced by a fawning demeanor.
"Chen Family Ancestor!" It was infuriating how the people below were so incompetent; they couldn't even write a simple battle report clearly after a little education!
Chen Moxuan picked up the document from the floor and glanced at it, noticing only some minor errors. He sighed inwardly, wondering when Di Sha Jiang Jun had become so irritable.
"General, how is the situation at the border?" Chen Moxuan asked.
Di Sha Jiang Jun sighed and replied, "The Azure Wolf Kingdom has gathered its army and is not far from Anque City. Their intentions are quite obvious. We suffered significant losses last time, and it will be difficult to receive reinforcements in a short time. If we truly cannot hold our ground, would it be possible to trouble you, Chen Family Ancestor..."
Before he could finish, urgent footsteps echoed from outside.
"General, it's bad! The scouts outside have reported that the Azure Wolf Kingdom's army has already reached Silver Goose City and is about to launch an attack!" a guard reported anxiously.
"Impossible!" Di Sha Jiang Jun exclaimed in disbelief. "I have been monitoring their every move; how could they suddenly arrive at Silver Goose City?"
The scout outside was drenched in cold sweat, unable to utter a word.
Chen Moxuan stood up with a smile and said, "I'll go check on Chen Feng first. You handle your matters, General. Don't worry; it won't get that serious."
Di Sha Jiang Jun nodded quickly, his expression visibly improving.
However, after Chen Moxuan left, he soon heard the sound of things being smashed behind him. He knew all too well that while that method was effective, it clearly had severe side effects. Di Sha Jiang Jun was evidently already deeply affected.
Chen Moxuan exited Di Sha Jiang Jun's residence and hurried through the streets of the city. The anxious expressions and hurried steps of the citizens revealed the looming shadow of impending chaos.
Upon returning to the Eagle Wing Guard's headquarters, Chen Moxuan rushed to Chen Feng's room. He pushed open the door and saw Chen Feng standing by the window, furrowing his brows as he gazed at the sky outside, seemingly troubled.
Knock knock. Chen Moxuan lightly tapped on the table, breaking the silence in the room.
"What are you thinking? You didn't even notice someone came in," he said.
Chen Feng turned around and upon seeing his ancestor's figure, a look of joy immediately appeared on his face.
"Ancestor! You're back! I was just thinking of some matters I wanted to discuss with you," he exclaimed.
Chen Moxuan nodded and sat down at the table, gesturing for Chen Feng to do the same.
"Speak up, what troubles you so?" Chen Feng sighed and said.
"Ancestor, I originally planned to venture into the Azure Wolf Kingdom and explore the Yomi Blood Valley in search of the Blood Emperor's relics. However, with the war on the brink of eruption, spies from both nations are scattered along the route. It seems nearly impossible to avoid them and reach the Yomi Blood Valley."
Chen Moxuan's gaze shifted slightly upon hearing this. "The biggest issue with sending you to Yomi Blood Valley is actually bringing people back. In other words, while our safety may not be a concern, we need to ensure that we have the capability to bring both people and the Blood Devouring Pearl back with us."
Chen Feng nodded, his expression filled with worry. "Ancestor, that is precisely what I am concerned about. Once the war breaks out in full force, all our plans will be thrown into disarray. Moreover, I am worried about Di Sha Jiang Jun's state; he was furious recently and berated his subordinates, which is not typical of him."
Chen Moxuan sighed and said, "Di Sha Jiang Jun has indeed changed; he has become extremely irritable lately. I suspect it has something to do with that technique. Although it is powerful, it clearly comes with severe side effects."
Upon hearing this, Chen Feng furrowed his brows even tighter. "If that’s the case, we must be more cautious. If Di Sha Jiang Jun encounters problems, it would be a significant blow to our plans. Without him, it would be difficult to quickly end this war."
Chen Moxuan shook his head. "Perhaps it would be better without him."
Chen Feng was momentarily stunned, unable to discern his Ancestor's true intent. "He is actually blocking our path," Chen Moxuan said flatly, "or rather, the entire Da Ao Kingdom is holding me back."
"Ancestor," Chen Feng's heart raced at this revelation. "I have exerted so much effort not just for you to hold a high position in a Mortal Empire."
In that moment, Chen Feng felt as though he had grasped a glimpse of his Ancestor's true thoughts!
