Chen Feng nodded, packing the last few items into his bag before following Chen Moxuan and Tiger Brother out of the Chen Family's gates.
The two headed north, making their way toward Anque City. The setting sun poured down like molten gold, painting the horizon in brilliant shades of orange and red, while the distant mountains took on a soft and mysterious silhouette in the warm light.
As they walked along the winding path flanked by lush trees, the occasional chirp of birds added a touch of tranquility to their journey. However, not long after leaving the city, Chen Moxuan excused himself to scout the road ahead and quietly slipped into the woods, leaving Chen Feng to continue alone.
Though puzzled, Chen Feng understood that his ancestor always had his reasons for doing things, so he pushed aside his thoughts and focused on the road to Anque City.
After a day of travel, just as fatigue began to set in with the sun dipping low in the sky, Chen Feng suddenly came upon a simple yet inviting Yard Station.
The station was adorned with a few dim lanterns swaying gently in the wind, resembling messengers of night quietly beckoning travelers. Upon entering, a blend of firewood and cooking aromas enveloped him, instantly easing his weariness.
In the center of the Yard Station stood a proprietress dressed in colorful attire, her graceful demeanor welcoming guests with a bright smile that seemed capable of melting away any travel fatigue. Yet for some reason, Chen Feng felt there was something hidden behind that smile.
Around her, several attendants moved about with their heads bowed, busily attending to customers. Their eyes flickered uneasily; whenever they glanced up, it seemed tinged with an imperceptible gloom.
In this seemingly ordinary Yard Station, everything felt unusual, as if an undercurrent was stirring beneath the surface, concealing unknown secrets. Chen Feng chose a corner seat but couldn't shake off a sense of alertness rising within him. He keenly sensed that this Yard Station and everyone within it might not be as simple as they appeared. Perhaps he had already stepped into a web of intrigue.
Meanwhile, away from the clamor of the Yard Station and deep within the dense woods, Chen Moxuan had not truly distanced himself; instead, he concealed himself among the shadows of the trees, silently observing Chen Feng's every move.
His eyes sparkled with wisdom as he pondered to himself. Although Chen Feng possessed considerable strength and talent, he had lived too comfortably. Despite having achieved Martial Champion status in the capital, much of his journey had been managed by members of the Chen Family.
Though his cultivation was impressive, he was still too naive regarding human malice and worldly troubles; he lacked experience. This time, he would let him face it alone and see if he could detect any anomalies.
Chen Moxuan's gaze pierced through layers of leaves and fell upon the humble Yard Station in the distance.
A faint, barely noticeable smile curled at the corners of his mouth as he understood the situation in his heart. This Yard Station clearly had its issues. In the Da Ao Kingdom, how could a mere woman take on the role of stationmaster? Unless she possessed extraordinary abilities, but such a person would never stoop to this level.
Moreover, the staff inside the Yard Station appeared somewhat uneasy. Although people were mingling and drinking, their attention was focused on Chen Feng. It seemed someone had deliberately set a trap for him. In this atmosphere, if Chen Feng failed to recognize the danger, it would be disastrous.
However, Chen Moxuan hadn’t anticipated that their target would be so impatient. They had only just left the city and already were preparing to strike!
Chen Moxuan did not rush to intervene. True growth requires enduring trials and tribulations. Chen Feng needed this test to sharpen his perception and enhance his sensitivity to danger.
Concealed in the shadows, Chen Moxuan’s sharp gaze pierced through the darkness, closely monitoring the movements within the Yard Station. He soon noticed that when Chen Feng ordered food, he specifically requested no alcohol. This detail made Chen Moxuan nod inwardly; after all, Chen Feng still maintained a degree of vigilance.
Yet, the actions of several staff members in the back kitchen did not escape his notice. Taking advantage of the moment while preparing meals, they secretly added poison to the water and dishes, their movements skillful and discreet—clearly seasoned hands at work.
Chen Moxuan scoffed inwardly; these people were indeed putting in a lot of effort. However, as long as Chen Feng could see through their scheme, no amount of poisoning could bridge the vast gap between them!
At that moment, the proprietress, dressed in colorful attire and exuding charm, began her approach toward Chen Feng. She swayed her hips gracefully as she walked to his table, her smile seemingly capable of melting hearts as she sweetly said, “Young man, you look weary from your travels; you must have come from afar! Why not try our Yard Station’s signature wine to refresh yourself? I guarantee it will wipe away your fatigue!”
Chen Feng looked at the proprietress’s alluring demeanor and felt a bit awkward; her bosom was almost pressed against him! He struggled to maintain his composure and awkwardly smiled back. “Madam, I’m truly tired from my journey and just want some food; I’ll pass on the wine.”
The proprietress clearly hadn’t expected such a blunt rejection from Chen Feng. A flicker of surprise and displeasure crossed her eyes.
But she quickly regained her smile and continued in a sweet voice, "Oh dear, where did you hear that? The wine at our Yard Station is famous far and wide. How can you leave without having a drink?"
Chen Feng felt a bit of a headache from the innkeeper's insistence. All he wanted was to finish his meal and get back on the road, never expecting to encounter such trouble.
He had no choice but to firmly say, "Innkeeper, I really don’t drink. Just serve me my meal."
At that moment, several attendants came over with dishes in hand. Their eyes sparkled with anticipation and nervousness, clearly waiting to see Chen Feng consume the food that had been tampered with.
Under such scrutiny, even an idiot could sense something was off.
Moreover, he suddenly noticed a significant issue: one of the attendants had accidentally unbuttoned his collar while serving, revealing a gruesome scar on his collarbone.
Chen Feng kicked the table in front of him aside and swiftly drew the knife from his waist, its blade glinting coldly in the sunlight.
With a cold smirk, Chen Feng looked at the attendant and said, "Take off your clothes!"
The attendant froze for a moment, but perhaps realizing something, his expression quickly darkened.
"That knife wound on your collarbone is too obvious. Such a mark isn’t something just anyone can have," Chen Feng said coldly.
As soon as Chen Feng's words fell, the innkeeper was also taken aback, but then a glint of malice flashed in her eyes.
The attendants' expressions changed when they heard Chen Feng's words; they initially looked startled but then turned fierce almost instantly.
They hadn’t expected Chen Feng to be so perceptive, noticing even such subtle details.
