Rita's excited laughter echoed through the phone, but Lin Aishi couldn't bring herself to laugh. "Rita, this is a misunderstanding. I don't even know An Ruochen. I..."
"Aishi, this is your opportunity, do you understand?" Rita's tone shifted to serious as she continued, "Whether this is true or not, the media believes it. The news has aired, and your popularity will rise. The director of that movie you missed last time said you could audition again..."
"Rita, let me think about it," Lin Aishi said hurriedly before hanging up.
What she needed wasn't time to think; she needed to figure out what An Ruochen was up to.
When she woke up that morning, she didn't see An Ruochen and assumed the runaway child had finally come to his senses and returned home. Who would have thought he was a rising idol?
On the table, Lin Aishi found a note with a string of numbers on it. She dialed the number and heard An Ruochen's cheerful voice. "Shishi, you're awake? What are you thinking about? You..."
"Shishi, I'm in trouble right now. Can you come to the company and wait for me?" An Ruochen said with a hint of desperation.
He had revealed their relationship without permission, and even though he was just a third-rate star, the higher-ups were not pleased with him at all.
Lin Aishi paused for a moment. "I'll come find you."
She drove to Imperial City Entertainment, where An Ruochen was just being released from his reprimand. Lin Aishi was dragged away by him under the watchful eyes of the company's executives.
Once they reached an empty stairwell, Lin Aishi put on a stern face and asked, "Why did you say that?"
An Ruochen grinned playfully. "Because I want to pursue you."
"Chasing after?" Lin Aishi couldn't help but raise her voice in mockery. "We just met, and I don't know anything about you!"
An Ruochen replied earnestly, "I know your name is Lin Aishi, and I like you. I want to pursue you."
He was dissatisfied with the relentless work, stubbornly wandering the streets, drenched in the rain for a long time. Among the many passersby, only she stopped to offer him warmth during his lowest moment. She was worth his love.
Lin Aishi sighed helplessly. "You should know what the name 'Lin Aishi' represents."
"Those old men have already said it," An Ruochen pouted.
"So what?"
"So what?"
What kind of naivety would lead someone to speak such light words?
Lin Aishi didn't know whether to envy his innocent ignorance or to mock him a little to help him accept reality faster.
An Ruochen remained stubborn; she had no obligation to play along with his game.
Lin Aishi declined the high-level "meeting" with Imperial City Entertainment and left gracefully.
As she was about to hail a cab by the roadside, a black Maybach stopped in front of her. The window rolled down, revealing Zi Dingqian's resolute face. "Get in."
Lin Aishi turned away, ignoring him.
Zi Dingqian spoke softly, "Do you want to see Bei Bei?"
Lin Aishi paused, looking at him with resentment. He smiled and said, "My son, his name is Zi Beibei."
Lin Aishi relented.
She wanted to see Bei Bei; she missed him terribly.
Once in the car, Lin Aishi felt even more awkward. Ding Anmin sat in the driver's seat and glanced at her, greeting her with just a look. In that moment, Lin Aishi felt as if all her secrets were being scrutinized.
The car drove down the road, heading toward the suburbs. The closer they got to their destination, the more anxious Lin Aishi became.
Memories from three years ago surged back like a tidal wave, threatening to drown her.
After getting out of the car, Lin Aishi hurriedly asked, "Where's Bei Bei?"
"He's not here." Zi Dingqian picked up a newspaper from the table; the headline was about this morning's news.
The paparazzi were relentless, digging up her past—except for what had happened three years ago.
