In the afternoon of the second day at the military base in City S, An Xiaotian and Qin Weishan finished their daily training tasks and went to Jiao An's office, where Jiao An informed them that he had something to show them.
"Yesterday, a five-member criminal gang attempted to rob an ATM in a village in City S but was completely subdued by a mysterious figure in black. Since this person was masked and left no footprints, the police are currently unable to identify them..."
"This news is interesting. No footprints?" Qin Weishan leaned against the wall with his arms crossed. "Have you noticed how many robberies have been happening lately? Could it be that some people actually believe those ridiculous predictions from so-called prophets? Something about the end of the world... Ha, that's laughable."
An Xiaotian looked at the figure in black on the computer screen and felt a sense of familiarity. He recalled the person in black who had saved him during a battle and fell into deep thought.
"Let's go, you two. Dr. Li Huihong is looking for us," Jiao An said as he stood up.
"I guess Dr. Li must have made some discoveries that can enhance our equipment," Qin Weishan speculated as he opened the office door.
"Come on, he's a biologist; this kind of thing should be handled by Dr. Chen Hao, right?" Jiao An shot a disdainful glance at Qin Weishan. "As far as I know, there are some strange things left behind in the Viper organization's laboratory, like a row of test tubes filled with unknown elements in Liang Muqi's room, along with disassembled unknown firearms. It's all very odd."
"How does what you just said have anything to do with biology?" Qin Weishan quickly stepped closer to Jiao An, who pretended to be indifferent, and asked with his hands raised.
"It might actually be related," An Xiaotian suddenly spoke up.
"You!" Qin Weishan felt like punching him. "After all this time training together, can't you give me some support?"
"That's not what I meant, Brother Weishan," An Xiaotian said apologetically as he scratched his head and withdrew his smile, expressing his concerns: "Considering the recent bizarre phenomena and my experiences in Shengfeng Village, if there really is a newly emerging mysterious force, it wouldn't be surprising. Think about it carefully; could a group of fugitives really organize something as troublesome as Viper? There must be someone pulling the strings behind the scenes. Right now, everyone is focused on our area, speculating about who is causing trouble within our borders, but I can't shake the feeling that we shouldn't rule out the possibility of extraterrestrial forces infiltrating us. It would make perfect sense for them to use their advantageous resources to exchange for biological data from Earth."
"That's alarmist talk," Qin Weishan scoffed. "Whoever it is that dares to cause trouble in our country will eventually be subdued!"
Five minutes later, the three arrived at Dr. Li Huihong's laboratory door. The pristine and clean laboratory came into view as soon as the door opened, with instruments so exquisite they could be considered museum pieces.
Dr. Li was hunched over at his desk, carefully observing something under a microscope. The three stood quietly beside him, not daring to disturb him.
An assistant organizing reports noticed them; although unsure of who they were, it was clear they had come to see Dr. Li.
However, Dr. Li has a principle: he absolutely hates being interrupted by others while working. The assistant glanced at the bowed head of the doctor and then at the three people quietly waiting, feeling so awkward that they were almost about to burst into flames. After struggling internally for a while, they gently tapped Dr. Li.
Dr. Li frowned, raised his face, and was about to say something when he turned his head and saw the three people quietly waiting. He quickly stood up and said, "Oh! I’m sorry! I was too focused on my research just now and didn’t notice you all. My apologies."
"It’s no problem; you are worth our wait," An Xiaotian smiled.
Dr. Li Huihong is the chief scientist in the biotechnology department at Fengta. After the day of the Variant Current incident, he took over the research on its antidote under General Wang's orders.
"You all... General Jiang Yan must have mentioned it, right? The liquid in the reagent needle that Old Wang received before his death is not any element found on Earth."
Leading the three into his exclusive laboratory, Dr. Li continued, "Strange, isn’t it? But what’s even stranger follows."
Dr. Li opened his computer and clicked on an image showing a syringe that had fallen to the ground.
"This is a photo sent by the police from last night's crime scene; it’s from that black-clad person who took down a whole team of cash thieves. The police have confirmed with City S Hospital that there is no such model of syringe. They speculated whether it might be some kind of undisclosed anesthetic ammunition used for self-defense by the military. But the truth is, it definitely isn’t."
"However, to provide a reasonable explanation to the investigation team, we also searched through military big data for evidence containing this element. Can you guess what we found? Not a single hospital in the country has it, not even biological research institutes, pharmaceutical companies, or even rescue centers... simply put, it doesn’t exist! The only match is the syringe in your materials."
An Xiaotian looked incredulously at the reagent needle in their hand.
"Yes, it's the reagent needle used to suppress your internal current," Dr. Li confirmed.
The three lowered their heads to examine it closely and then simultaneously raised their faces to look at the evidence photo sent by the investigation team last night—two items that were identical to the naked eye.
"So, you must have some bold ideas about this, right?" Jiao An asked first.
Dr. Li paused for a moment, his expression turning serious and tense: "That’s right; this is a completely unfamiliar element that does not exist on Earth. I believe my hypothesis is quite reasonable—there are intelligent beings here that do not belong to our civilization."
The three exchanged glances.
The entire base knows that there is someone in Fengta who firmly believes in the existence of aliens—Dr. Li Huihong, who is famously supportive of extraterrestrial existence theories. From this perspective, An Xiaotian felt that this might carry some of the doctor’s subjective assumptions.
An Xiaotian shrugged, finding it somewhat amusing, but when he thought of the man in black, he felt a hint of reality. The man in black who had saved him during their initial encounter, the one who forced him to throw out the stun grenade that inadvertently caused the Variant Current to arise within him, and this completely unfamiliar reagent needle had come from his good friend Liu Xuan.
Liu Xuan?
This was somewhat absurd and laughable. An Xiaotian said dismissively, "Doctor, we respect your opinion, but that doesn't rule out the possibility that it could have been created by some genius from the public."
"But do you think there would be such things in a legitimate rescue center within the base?" Dr. Li countered.
An Xiaotian fell silent; the doctor had a point. The name of the person who had accompanied him for many years, closely related to the reagent needle, and who had personally injected the liquid from the needle into his body began to linger in his mind.
"Liu Xuan..."
An Xiaotian's muttering piqued the curiosity of Qin Weishan and Jiao An beside him. They looked down at him and found that he had fallen into deep thought, completely oblivious to his surroundings.
Hearing that name, Dr. Li seemed to recall something and said mysteriously to An Xiaotian, "Do you know what two words General Wang said when he came to me to look at research reports?"
"What?" An Xiaotian's nerves instantly tensed up.
"Liu Xuan."
"Xuan?!"
The sudden surge of speculation made An Xiaotian shudder; he was taken aback, his fingers trembling so much that the documents slipped from his grasp and floated to the ground. Qin Weishan quickly bent down to catch the documents, exchanging puzzled glances with Jiao An.
"Your friend Liu Xuan, doesn't he live in Shengfeng Village?"
An Xiaotian was stunned, lowering his hands in shock. Under the gaze of the other three, he walked toward the laboratory door like a zombie.
At the same time, at City S University
Liu Xuan shifted from reminiscing to looking forward to tomorrow. Sitting on the lower bunk of his bed, he ignored his roommate's laughter and antics; his eyes were filled with anticipation for Ma Yihan. He had arranged to meet Ma Yihan again in two nights at the building where they first met. Every time he thought about it, a wave of happiness surged within him. He picked up his phone one moment only to put it down again the next; thoughts of longing occupied most of his mind, making it hard for him to concentrate—this was what it felt like to pursue one's first love.
When can I bring her home? If my mother sees me bringing such a beautiful girl home, she will surely be very happy...
However, a heavy blow to his head brought Liu Xuan back to reality. He covered his head and looked up, only to see that everyone from Dormitory 127 and 129 had gathered around him, looking down at him.
The big brother of the dormitory, Wei Ming, stood in the middle with his arms crossed over his chest, coldly staring at Liu Xuan and signaling for two others to lift him up.
"What are you... doing?"
Liu Xuan thought they were going to beat him up, although he didn't even know what he had done wrong. His roommate, Xiao Hei, came over with a grin and lifted him up: "Liu Xuan, this afternoon you have to come with us for a barbecue! You always do everything alone; it's not right. If you don't come, Wei Ge is going to twist your head off!"
"Right!" Everyone chimed in, all grinning mischievously.
Liu Xuan sighed, feeling somewhat helpless because this might be the perfect time for him to train with Nars.
"Alright, I'll go." In the end, Liu Xuan yielded to the "black force."
"That's more like it," Wei Ming said expressionlessly.
At noon, Liu Xuan arrived as promised and followed everyone out for camping. However, when they saw he only brought a backpack, they teased him again: "You didn't bring your materials mechanics homework, did you, nerd? Hahaha..."
"No, it's food, food." Facing their deliberately smiling faces, Liu Xuan responded awkwardly.
There was indeed food inside, but taking up most of the space was a black coat and a mask—requirements from Nars for safety. He had his reasons for this; Nars had his own concerns.
Since the largest Black Umbrella Viper Organization in the country was destroyed, the crime rate had dropped to 0.3%. However, according to incomplete statistics, there were still cases of people mysteriously disappearing recently, and surprisingly, the numbers were increasing rather than decreasing.
Nars was convinced this was definitely an internal Human trick. As for why they would do this, the only speculation he could think of was human experimentation.
The camping site chosen by their two dormitories happened to be in a mountainous area; although it was close to the city, Nars could never fully relax.
Setting up the mat, lighting the charcoal fire, arranging the ingredients... In this mountain not far from City S, a group of young people was eager to start grilling. Laughter echoed throughout the clear mountain air as everything was ready; they just waited for the food to cook. Liu Xuan was also forcibly pulled into a conversation by everyone when Nars's sudden warning made Liu Xuan's smile vanish for a moment: "Xuan, something feels off in this mountain; there are others nearby."
"Liu Xuan, what's wrong?" Xiao Hei waved his hand in front of Liu Xuan, bending down to look into his eyes. "Why did you suddenly stop smiling? Do you have something on your mind?"
"Ah, no, no, I just ate the oyster right after it was taken out; it was too hot," Liu Xuan said, deliberately fanning his mouth and standing up. "Everyone eat first; I think my stomach feels a bit uncomfortable, and there’s no restroom here. I’ll just find a place to relieve myself."
"Hey, Liu Xuan, are you that crude?"
Everyone once again teased Liu Xuan as he turned away. He didn’t look back, bending over as if he really had a stomachache and ran deep into the woods. Once he was sure he was far enough away, he asked Nars, "In such a remote place, where would there be any people?"
"My instincts are usually right, but it's better to be cautious," Nars replied.
Liu Xuan lifted the watch face that Nars had given him and tapped the runes according to memory, activating the holographic analysis lens from his equipment. Soon, a blue holographic screen appeared in front of his right eye. This was taught to him by Nars; in future battles, Nars would use the left eye's perspective while Liu Xuan would use the right.
"The holographic analysis lens isn’t picking up anything either; maybe your instincts are really wrong this time," Liu Xuan said as the lens continued to scan everything in sight.
However, considering his companion's safety, Liu Xuan still decided to descend the mountain with Nars. After sneaking around for a while, when they were about to head back and confirmed everything was fine, Nars sensed something was off first: "Why is there not a sound coming from the camp?"
"Oh no!" Liu Xuan took a quick step forward and dashed out of the forest into the clearing.
"Where is everyone?"
Pushing aside the dense foliage, Liu Xuan peeked out and was horrified to find that all his classmates were gone! Only a few charred skewers remained on the grill, sizzling as hot oil dripped onto the charcoal.
Realizing that something was seriously wrong, Liu Xuan quickly asked Nars, "They wouldn't—"
Liu Xuan made the worst assumption.
"No, it's very likely they were taken for human experiments," Nars said.
Liu Xuan's head buzzed with alarm. "I have to save them!" He spotted some trampled grass ahead and quickly followed the footprints.
Meanwhile, deep in the mountains, six Internal Troops were escorting Wei Ming and his group toward the summit. An internal human kicked Xiao Hei's backside to urge him to move faster. Xiao Hei shot him an angry glare. But each internal human held a gun; if anyone made a sound, they would be shot on the spot.
"Let's capture some experimental subjects to take back; the boss should be happy too." The two Internal Humans were talking, while a group of people being escorted walked forward in fear and despair. Only Wei Ming was constantly looking for an opportunity to take down the nearby Internal Troops.
Suddenly, a rustling sound from the right side of the jungle alerted everyone. The Internal Troops immediately raised their guns, but a wild rabbit hopped out from the bushes, causing several soldiers to slowly lower their weapons.
Now's the time!
From the still bushes on the other side, a flying knife with a blue arc shot out directly, catching them off guard and deeply piercing one of the Internal Troops in the neck! The man screamed and ultimately fell to the ground.
"Who is it?"
A laser gun instantly shot a gap in that area of bushes, but what emerged was not a person; instead, a massive Particle Shield came rushing forward!
Nars listened to the sound of bullets hitting the shield, which became increasingly sparse. Seizing the moment they were reloading, he rolled over to the nearest Internal Human and delivered a powerful shield strike, knocking him hard to the ground!
Immediately after, four clones suddenly split off from Nars, and five indistinguishable figures armed with Light Arc Daggers charged straight at the other five soldiers, even swapping places as they ran.
In their panic, the five soldiers shattered two clones, but it was already too late—
Three clones had reached them. The clone on the left swung a dagger and knocked one down; another quickly turned and took down another soldier; the clone on the right slashed through, decapitating one soldier. Then, the three clones merged together as the real Nars retracted his clones, leaping into the air and stabbing down fiercely to kill the fourth soldier.
"Don't move!" At some point, the last soldier mistakenly thought he had taken Xiao Hei hostage and aimed his gun at her. "Be careful or I'll shoot!"
Nars raised his hand cannon at him. Seeing him holding Xiao Hei hostage, he slowly lowered his arm while that soldier began to step back, looking for an opportunity to escape.
Suddenly! With a loud bang, Nars's hand cannon fired from his suspended arm, hitting that soldier in the knee!
The soldier thought he would truly lower his arm and relaxed his guard. Unexpectedly, this shot hit his own knee; losing his lower leg, he fell to the ground screaming.
Xiao Hei hurried over to join everyone and began unbinding them. Nars stepped forward, kneeling slightly before that soldier and said, "Just you guys."
"Nars—"
The soldier looked at him, tilted his head, and fell into a coma. Nars was not hesitant either; he plunged a knife into the soldier's heart.
The students watched in shock, stunned by the sight of him killing all the enemies. It took them a while to react. Everything happened so quickly that they felt as if nothing had occurred at all.
The soldier who had been kicked down staggered to his feet, aiming at Nars. Wei Ge, quick to respond, punched him down to the ground and continued to rain blows upon him.
"Damn it! You dare to rob even your grandpa Wei? I'll beat you to death, you scoundrel—"
Just as he was getting into it, Nars summoned a hand cannon and blasted the soldier's head apart, deep blue blood splattering all over Wei Ge's face.
"You all need to leave quickly; this place is no longer safe," Nars said to everyone. "I happened to pass by here; there's a child still waiting for you up there."
As he passed by Nars, Wei Ge forced a smile despite his irritation, wiped some blood off his face, and said, "Thanks." Then he took off running.
Nars watched them leave, while Liu Xuan laughed inwardly: "Hahaha! He's going to have to wash his face all day long~"
"Don't celebrate too early, Liu Xuan. The appearance of their soldiers here means their battleship is nearby as well. If they notice that there are fewer people on the life monitor, they'll definitely send someone over. We need to evacuate soon," Nars warned.
After switching back with Nars, Liu Xuan anxiously glanced at the sky and hurried toward the camp.
