Looking at the seemingly endless flow of traffic, Wan Wei complained about the congestion that felt like constipation, while secretly cursing Zhong Xia'er in her heart: “You jerk, I curse you to be impotent for life!”
Zhong Xia'er was indeed a jerk. Knowing full well that she couldn't hold her liquor, he still got her drunk along with a few other idiots from work. As a result, she ended up making a fool of herself and even came on to that flamboyant monkey. It was worse than the apocalypse!
In a daze, Wan Wei rushed to the office. Before she could even clock in, she heard Zhong Xia'er’s annoying voice behind her: “How could you leave me all alone? Didn’t we have so much fun last night? Look—”
He tugged at his collar, revealing his shoulder covered in suggestive bite marks. “You were so excited to bite me, haha! I never expected my Wan Wei would be into this!”
“Get lost!” Wan Wei was furious and swung her fist at that pitiful sight.
At that moment, she finally believed that there were indeed people in this world who deserved to be despised.
Like Zhong Xia'er.
As the end of the workday approached, Wan Wei received a notification that an important guest was visiting Jiang Cheng that evening, and the higher-ups wanted all members of the creative department to accompany him. This clearly meant she would have to face Zhong Xia'er again.
Reluctantly, Wan Wei decided to ask her boss for leave. After all, under Zhong Xia'er's oppressive presence, overtime pay was just a pipe dream.
As she walked to her boss's office, she saw Zhong Xia'er coming out from inside.
Upon seeing her, Zhong Xia'er immediately approached with a smirk: “You don’t need to ask for leave.”
“Huh? What do you mean?”
“I know you’re still shy, so—hey hey! You can confidently attend tonight’s dinner without worry. Don’t sacrifice your bonus because I’ve already taken leave.”
Zhong Xia'er was pleased to see what seemed like a shy blush on Wan Wei's face, though he wouldn't rule out the possibility that it was anger.
"Shy, my foot!" Wan Wei's mind seemed to be struggling to catch up. When did Zhong Xia'er become so understanding?
It was truly... like a sudden thunderclap, leaving her completely unprepared!
Before she could recover from this unexpected "surprise," Wan Wei saw Zhong Xia'er suddenly approach her with a mischievous grin. She instinctively tried to back away, but her waist was caught by a strong grip. The next moment, his warm lips pressed against hers.
Seeing her stunned as if frozen in place, Zhong Xia'er smacked his lips in a teasing manner and said, "It's really sad that you didn't try to keep me here. I guess I'll just have to disgust you instead!"
"You..." Wan Wei raised her hand to hit him, but Zhong Xia'er had already escaped. Watching his arrogant retreating figure, she was so furious that she wished she could transform into a vicious dog and bite him to death.
Hmph, he had guts; she had indeed been disgusted by him!
Why was Zhong Xia'er being so understanding? Why wasn't he still acting like his usual self?
If time could be turned back, Wan Wei would rather endure being disgusted by Zhong Xia'er ten times than find herself in this situation—she glanced at the distinguished guest Zhao Zixuan sitting beside their team leader and suddenly thought of a phrase: haunting presence.
However, that phrase was not meant to describe Zhao Zixuan.
It was a term that the former Zhao Zixuan had used to describe her.
Back in college, she had relentlessly pursued Zhao Zixuan. Whenever he went to eat, she would be waiting at the cafeteria; when he went to the library, she would pretend to run into him; when he studied, she would carry her textbooks and feign ignorance just to ask him questions; when he played basketball on the court, she would be there cheering him on with water and flowers...
She was convinced that Zhao Zixuan would be moved, but unfortunately, Zhao Zixuan simply said, "Wan Wei, can we not do this? Isn't it better if we just continue being friends?"
No, it certainly wasn't better! So she decisively refused, "We've been friends for three years; just let me be your girlfriend for this last year. You know, the difference between a female friend and a girlfriend is just one word. You'll get used to it easily."
Zhao Zixuan sighed, "I won't get used to it."
Wan Wei expressed her disbelief, "Who says that?"
Zhao Zixuan sighed again, "Wan Wei, if you keep haunting me like this, I'm afraid we won't even be able to remain friends."
Wan Wei remained unconvinced, and so later on, they really couldn't even be friends. After graduating from university, Zhao Zixuan quietly left for Yun'an.
At this point in her memories, Wan Wei felt a pang in her heart and sulkily went to the restroom to scold herself in the mirror.
Just as she was feeling angry and sad, Zhong Xia'er suddenly called. His voice was as flamboyant as ever. He said, "I've thought it over and I think we need to talk about what happened last night. A handsome man like me can't let you sleep with him for nothing, right? You know many models in our company want to take advantage of me, but I've remained pure for you!"
Normally, Wan Wei would have retorted angrily, but at that moment, she had no energy for such exchanges. A simple "Get lost" was all she needed to send Zhong Xia'er away.
As she came out of the restroom, she heard someone calling her. The familiar voice made her pause instinctively. Nervously turning around, she met Zhao Zixuan's striking face.
That night, Wan Wei couldn't sleep because Zhao Zixuan had actually said to her, "I miss you."
Hearing those four words made Wan Wei momentarily dazed; it felt as if the person standing before her was not the cold and indifferent Zhao Zixuan from her memories but rather the shameless and insufferable Zhong Xia'er.
Her first encounter with Zhong Xia'er was at the company's orientation meeting. She was certain she had never seen this monkey-like person before, yet Zhong Xia'er dashed through the crowd and excitedly hugged her, exclaiming, "I missed you!"
Missed you, my foot!
This was the most shameless pickup line she had ever encountered. It was pitiful that their colleagues actually believed Zhong Xia'er’s nonsense, mistaking them for the legendary childhood sweethearts.
When Wan Wei first heard this gossip in the break room, she nearly choked on her coffee. Furious, she stormed off to confront Zhong Xia'er, only to find him smiling and opening his arms wide. "Wan Wei, you finally remembered me! Come, come into my embrace."
At that moment, it was beyond what mere words could describe.
After that, Zhong Xia'er launched an all-out assault on Wan Wei, pursuing her relentlessly. He even went so far as to dramatically release a giant heart-shaped helium balloon from the company’s ground floor on her birthday.
Through the floor-to-ceiling glass window, Wan Wei stared at the gaudy pink balloon and felt a flicker of sympathy for Zhao Zixuan from her university days. She realized how painful it was to be pursued by someone she didn’t like.
But today, Zhao Zixuan said he didn’t dislike her; in fact, he missed her.
How could she believe that?
It was more shocking than the end of the world.
She didn’t believe it—or rather, she simply didn’t have the courage to accept it as truth.
Yet, she couldn’t help but believe it either; after all, Zhao Zixuan was someone she had once loved deeply.
