Wu Rong decided to visit his teacher for the last time. Although he was in a hurry, he still asked Rao Jie, "Do you want to come with me? Even though school is starting soon, there won't be any classes next semester, so you can definitely come along."
Rao Jie, however, declined. "You have your own things to do, and I have my own thoughts to ponder. A little distance might help me think more clearly."
Wu Rong was reluctant; he wanted to take Rao Jie with him and felt a sense of urgency in his heart. "What’s there to think about separately? Come with me. I don’t even know how long I’ll be there. I..."
Wu Rong suddenly trailed off, looking somewhat lost.
But Rao Jie smiled and pushed him gently. "Don't worry. If you end up taking a long time over there, I'll come find you."
"Really?" Wu Rong looked at Rao Jie with a hint of disbelief.
Rao Jie replied with a smile, "Yes, as long as you let me know when the time comes, I'll go."
Only then did Wu Rong hesitantly leave.
Watching Wu Rong's retreating figure, Rao Jie softly thought to herself: Go ahead and see what you truly want.
With Wu Rong gone, Rao Jie felt an emptiness in her heart. Turning around, she applied for accommodation at the school.
There were still a few days before the semester began, and Wu Rong had already been gone for a week.
Although they communicated constantly through messages and video calls every night, Rao Jie still felt an emptiness around her, even though she was busy throughout the day.
However, today was a bit different; while she was busy at the store, she noticed that Wu Rong hadn’t contacted her at all throughout the day.
Today she received her salary from the store manager, who praised her for being such a diligent girl and expressed hope that she could continue working there if she had time since they were short-staffed. After all, the location was close to the school and quite popular.
Rao Jie thought for a moment and said, "Manager, I have a request. I’d like to continue working here, but I want to work with the Pastry Chef on making cakes. I have some ideas that I’d like to sell in the store; I can do it without pay."
The manager understood. "So you want to use this place as a way to hone your skills?"
Feeling a bit shy, Rao Jie replied, "I... I won’t make anything too terrible."
The manager chuckled, finding Rao Jie adorable. "What you make isn’t terrible at all; it’s delicious and beautiful! I'm actually worried I won’t be able to afford you as my Pastry Chef!"
Rao Jie exclaimed in surprise, "Really? Can I?"
The manager nodded but added, "However, let me remind you that working with the Pastry Chef here will help you learn some basics and refine your techniques but it won't be a systematic education. If you want to become a Pastry Chef, you'll still need to attend a specialized school. But... if I remember correctly, you're a student at Yun Cheng University and are preparing for graduate studies?"
Rao Jie's expression gradually became serious.
"I... I don’t know either, but I want to give it a try—to see if I can pursue this path. After all, I still have one semester left to make my choice."
The manager smiled and patted Rao Jie on the shoulder. "It's already impressive that you're willing to give yourself this opportunity. Taking this step is not easy; I'm here to support you!"
"Thank you, Manager!" Rao Jie had not shared her thoughts with anyone yet. She wanted to give it a try, to see if she could discover other possibilities for herself. Perhaps she would find something she could truly strive for.
