Chapter Five
I continued to search through his past social media and photos for the woman named "L," trying to piece together her image. However, her presence always felt elusive, like an unreal dream. In the photos, she smiled brightly, appearing so close to him, and these images pierced my heart like thorns.
Every group photo, every comment, weighed heavily on me. I began to doubt whether there had always been another person's shadow looming over me since the moment I met him, a shadow that had never dissipated.
I kept flipping through those old pictures when suddenly, I noticed a few particular comments beneath one of the photos.
"You two are truly a match made in heaven!"
"Long time no see, how has L been lately?"
"Let's get together again; do you remember the promises we made back then?"
These comments sparked even greater questions in my mind. Just how deep was their relationship? What did "L" mean to him? And how much had he concealed from me?
The more I looked, the colder I felt inside, as if the entire world was slowly collapsing around me. I could no longer endure these incessant questions and decided to take action. I needed to find answers to find peace within myself.
I recalled a mutual friend he had mentioned, someone who was also a friend of theirs. Perhaps I could get more clues from him.
After hesitating for a moment, I dialed that friend's number.
"Hello?" A familiar voice came through the line.
I struggled to keep my voice calm: "Hi, this is... his fiancée. There's something that's been bothering me tonight, and I wanted to ask you about it."
The friend seemed a bit surprised but quickly regained his composure: "Oh, of course. What's up? Not sleeping before the wedding night? Is there something on your mind?"
"Actually, I recently came across a photo of him with a woman named 'L.' Can you tell me more about her?" I tried to keep my tone casual, but the tension in my chest was hard to suppress.
The silence on the other end of the line made me uneasy. After a moment, he slowly spoke, "‘L’... she was his ex-girlfriend. They were very close when they were together. Back then, they were almost inseparable, and everyone thought they would end up together."
"What happened next?" I couldn't help but ask.
"Later, ‘L’ suddenly decided to go abroad, and they broke up. He was heartbroken and took a long time to move on. I thought he had put it all behind him, but... from what you’re saying, maybe he still holds onto some feelings for her."
His words cut through my last shred of hope like a sharp blade. I clutched my phone tightly, feeling my heart race in my chest.
"So, she meant a lot to him, didn't she?" My voice trembled slightly.
"Perhaps," his voice was deep and sincere. "She was his first love and someone very important to him. But that’s all in the past now. He’s with you now, and your relationship is what truly matters."
I managed a weak smile. "Thank you for telling me this. I just... feel a bit confused."
After hanging up, a wave of helplessness washed over me. Everything from the past seemed to foreshadow an uncertain future. That woman, his first love, 'L,' still held an important place in his heart, while I was merely someone filling the void she left behind.
This realization left me feeling lost and in pain. I stood by the window, gazing at the pitch-black night sky, filled with questions and fears.
Was there really any point in going through with tomorrow's wedding? After learning all this, could I still walk down the aisle with him feeling at peace? Would our future be as beautiful as I once imagined?
I felt an unprecedented exhaustion but couldn’t find sleep. The night was still heavy around me, shrouding my heart in uncertainty. I didn’t know how to face it all or how to choose my future.
