He stormed over, furious, and shouted, "Are you cursing me in your heart?" 0
"What kind of look is that?" 0
"Try looking at me again." 0
I quickly lowered my head, afraid to meet his gaze. 0
He slammed the pot down. "How dare you ignore me?" 0
"Do you look down on me?" 0
"Do you think I'm pathetic?" 0
"Say something!" 0
"Do you believe I would smash your house?" 0
"Kill your parents?" 0
"Kill you too?" 0
I looked up at him and said slowly, word by word, "I didn't think that. I was just wondering how to respond to you." 0
"Don't be angry, please don't be angry." 0
His raised hand slowly lowered. 0
After that day, he never hit me again. 0
Finally, he allowed me to stroll around the community after my facial injuries healed. 0
I linked my arm with his, and he held my wrist tightly. 0
Inside, I felt anxious; this was a chance to escape, but if I acted rashly, would I end up getting hurt even worse? 0
Before we left, he leaned close to my ear and threatened, "Don't even think about running away; otherwise, I'll kill your whole family." 0
To others, we appeared to be a loving couple. 0
Only I knew how terrifying he truly was. 0

I linked my arm with his and gestured a "110." 0
Would anyone notice me? 0
If someone asked, I would say my phone was dead and could I borrow one to make a call? 0
I carefully observed the passersby around me. 0
Some hurried along, some were engrossed in their phones, and others were intimately engaged with their partners... 0
No one gave us a second glance. 0
I stopped and looked up at Ma Shan. "I want to go to the convenience store to buy a pack of tissues." 0
He nodded. "I'll go with you." 0
"No need, just wait for me here. I'll be back soon." 0
He released my hand. "Don't pull any tricks." 0
I walked into the convenience store and tried to strike up a conversation with the clerk. "Hi, I've been here a few times; do you remember me?" 0
The clerk looked at me blankly. 0
I pointed in Ma Shan's direction. "That's my husband; he's hitting me. Can you help me call the police?" 0
The clerk eyed me suspiciously. "Your husband is hitting you? You seem pretty affectionate." 0
"Isn't it normal for couples to have some playful fights?" 0
"There's domestic violence law now; if you're really being hit, you can report it, but..." She hesitated. 0
"But what?" 0
"Family matters shouldn't be aired in public; we can't really get involved in this kind of thing." 0
I stared at her in disbelief. 0
She was speaking the truth. Family matters shouldn't be aired in public; even relatives might not care, let alone strangers. 0
I smiled faintly. "Thank you, could you get me a pack of tissues?" 0

After I paid and left the convenience store, I felt a wave of frustration wash over me. 0

It’s not easy to tell a stranger that I’m a victim of domestic violence; they might not believe me and could even think I’m crazy. I can’t just run up to someone and shout, “I’m being abused!” Even if the police were called, it’s likely they would just suggest we work it out ourselves. If my parents found out, they would be heartbroken. 0

Mom and Dad... 0

Just thinking about them made my eyes sting with unshed tears. 0

I walked slowly up to Ma Shan and forced a smile. “Shall we go?” 0

He pinched my chin, his expression hardening. “Why did you take so long?” 0

“I was in the restroom.” 0

“You’d better not be lying to me.” 0

He took my hand, leading me like I was a pet on a leash. 0

Once we got home, he began his torment again, gripping my throat and warning me, “Don’t even think about escaping, or I will really kill you.” 0

“I won’t dare,” I screamed in my mind, but my throat felt sealed shut, and no sound came out. 0

I looked at his twisted face, filled with nothing but endless fear. 0
