Chapter Seven: Truth and Illusion
The hospital corridor was brightly lit and cold. Gu Changting stood in the doctor's office, his gaze fixed on the medical report on the desk. The words conveyed a chilling reality—Su Ruolan was suffering from advanced malignant tumors, which had metastasized.
"Mr. Gu, her condition has been delayed for too long. If we do not proceed with surgery soon, I fear..." Before the doctor could finish, Gu Changting raised his hand to signal him to stop.
"Why has she never told me?" Gu Changting's voice was barely audible, yet his eyes betrayed an unmistakable shock and pain.
The doctor shook his head. "She may not have wanted to worry those around her, but delaying treatment will only put her life in greater danger."
In Gu Changting's mind, fragments of memories suddenly surfaced. Ruolan's busy figure in the kitchen of the Gu Family, her focused demeanor as she organized documents alone in the study, and even that resolute declaration, "I never thought about loving you." Everything felt like a slap in the face at that moment, leaving him utterly humiliated.
---
Two days later, Gu Changting finally found Ruolan outside a shabby clinic in a narrow alley. As he entered the clinic, he saw Ruolan at the counter picking up medication, her face so pale it seemed devoid of blood.
"Su Ruolan!" he called softly, his icy gaze filled with complex emotions.
Ruolan turned abruptly. The moment she saw him, a flicker of panic crossed her face but quickly gave way to calmness. "What are you doing here?"
Gu Changting stepped forward and grasped her wrist, his voice laced with restrained anger. "Do you think hiding here will let you escape everything? With your condition, can this place really solve your problems?"
"My health is none of your business!" Ruolan yanked her hand away from him, fatigue evident in her voice. "Gu Changting, I have left your world; what more do you want?"
"What more?" Gu Changting scoffed. "Do you think I can just stand by and watch you self-destruct? Even if you don't care about your life, I won't allow it!"
Ruolan froze, her gaze dropping. "This is not something you can control. Gu Changting, let go of me and let go of yourself."
Before she could finish speaking, her body suddenly swayed; the medication bag slipped from her hand as she collapsed weakly.
---
When Ruolan woke up, she found herself lying in a hospital bed with an IV needle inserted into her hand. Turning her head, she saw Gu Changting standing by the window, his expression deep as he looked at her.
"You..." Ruolan moved her lips; her voice was weak.
"What exactly do you plan to do to yourself?" Gu Changting turned around, his tone filled with anger but more so with an underlying concern.
Ruolan turned away from him. "Gu Changting, this is my life; I am responsible for it."
"Yes, your life is your own, but what about the marriage and the sacrifices over these years? Have you ever considered others?" Gu Changting's voice was low, his gaze sharp as it bore into her.
"Stop pretending to care." Ruolan forced a bitter smile. "It's all over between us; there's no need for you to waste any more time."
Meanwhile, Lin Wanran received the news at Gu Family Villa about Ruolan being hospitalized, and a cold smile flickered across her face. She immediately contacted Manager Wang, her tone sweet yet calculating. "Manager Wang, Ruolan is sick right now; it's the perfect opportunity. We can make Gu Changting completely give up on her."
Manager Wang laughed heartily on the other end of the line. "Don't worry; I know what to do. General Gu will definitely let go once he sees his 'wife's' true colors."
A few days later, Gu Changting received anonymously sent photos showing Ruolan and Manager Wang chatting in a café. The background was ambiguous, and the angle was deliberate, as if hinting at an unusual relationship between the two.
Gu Changting clenched the photos, a dark anger rising on his face. He strode into the hospital room and threw the pictures down in front of Ruolan's bed. "Su Ruolan, tell me, what is this?"
Ruolan glanced at the photos, her heart jolting, but she quickly forced herself to remain calm. "These things have nothing to do with you."
"Nothing to do with me?" Gu Changting sneered, fury igniting in his eyes. "How many more things are you hiding from me?"
Ruolan felt a pang in her heart and fought back tears. "Haven't you already decided what kind of person I am? Now that you see this, do you really need me to explain?"
---
Lin Wanran stood at the corner of the corridor, coldly observing the scene inside the hospital room. A satisfied smile crept onto her lips as she murmured to herself, "Su Ruolan, this time, let's see how you turn things around."
---
In the dead of night, the hospital room was silent. Ruolan lay quietly in bed, her gaze fixed on the ceiling as countless thoughts swirled in her mind. She clenched her fists and silently vowed, "Gu Changting, I promised myself I wouldn't be a burden to you. Therefore, I must leave."
The next morning, when Gu Changting returned to the hospital room, he found Ruolan's bed empty, with only a note left on the table that read:
"Thank you for everything, but please set me free."
