Guan Su Lin arrived at a speed that completely exceeded Zheng Mengni's expectations. In less than fifteen minutes, he was likely to find Guan Li in the study.
She could clearly feel how intensely her phone vibrated in her pocket, and she sensed the impatience of the person outside the door. However, the more urgent the situation became, the less she could afford to act hastily.
Tan Yan sucked on his bleeding tongue and said in a low voice, "Answer it. He heard the ringtone."
Of course, she had to answer the call. Before picking up, Zheng Mengni seriously addressed Tan Yan's earlier question.
"I do have a boyfriend now. Every time you confess when I mention my boyfriend, it’s hard not to make me wonder what exactly you want," she paused slightly and sighed helplessly. "Tan Yan, with your status, you should use proper means to compete."
"Okay, I understand," Tan Yan replied.
Zheng Mengni answered the call, her voice soft. "Hello? What’s wrong?"
On the other side of the door, Guan Su Lin's expression was frighteningly cold. He tore away his usual gentlemanly facade, his eyes tinged with red from impatience, and his fair face revealed a terrifying intensity.
Through gritted teeth, he spoke gently yet calmly, "Zheng Zheng, open the door for me. I'm outside."
"Okay, just wait a moment," Zheng Mengni said. At the same time, Tan Yan reached out and intertwined his fingers with her delicate hand. She tried to pull back, but he smoothly slid into her grasp, their fingers tightly locked together.
He leaned forward and kissed her neck in a bold manner, drawing her attention away from another man using the gentlest means possible.
The soft sound of her breath was faint but became painfully clear to Guan Su Lin's ears, slicing through his nerves like a sharp blade.
Before entering the study, Guan Su Lin thought it over and felt it was inappropriate to leave Zheng Mengni alone. So he greeted his father briefly and rushed back.
But she was nowhere to be found.
She had promised to wait for him and to stay put without wandering off. Yet in just a short while, she had vanished completely.
Messages went unanswered.
Guan Su Lin wanted to call her, but his sensitive and suspicious nature compelled him to find Tan Yan's room first.
He stood quietly at the door, listening intently as faint sounds reached him that ignited his fury.
Guan Su Lin didn't want to jump to malicious conclusions, but hearing those sounds confirmed his worst fears.
He ground his teeth and bit his lip in frustration, feeling a surge of anger building within him!
The door still hadn't opened when he softly called out again, "Zheng Zheng."
Before the storm arrives, there is always a moment of calm.
He knocked on the door with increasing urgency, the rhythm of his knocks growing more frantic.
"Zheng Zheng, open the door!"
Beep. The call ended abruptly.
"Huh?!" The sound lingered, drawn out in a way that was almost maddening.
Guan Su Lin suddenly laughed.
The laughter was hurried, the smile perplexing.
Inside, Zheng Mengni picked up the fallen blind cane and placed it into Tan Yan's hands, adjusting the Blindfold Sunglasses on his nose.
Before this, you might have to endure another embarrassing moment.
With that, Zheng Mengni opened the wardrobe and unhesitatingly shoved Tan Yan inside. She bent down to touch his head, speaking softly, "You hide well."
Tan Yan hugged his knees tightly, lowering his head as he pushed the sunglasses up, his vision becoming clear once more. He tilted his head to look at her snow-white neck and nodded softly in agreement.
Zheng Mengni unlocked the door.
Guan Su Lin's eyes brightened as the gloom lifted, revealing a cheerful smile once again. He lowered his head slightly, appearing particularly quiet.
"Why did you lock the door from the inside?"
"I felt a bit sleepy after eating and was about to take a nap."
Zheng Mengni reached out to pull him closer, but Guan Su Lin naturally slipped his hands into his pockets, seemingly avoiding her touch without intention.
Zheng Mengni felt a bit wronged but still gently grasped his arm. "What's wrong?"
Guan Su Lin slowly raised his eyes, an indescribable joy on his face. He smiled as if genuinely happy, yet his gaze remained cold.
"Ah, are you hiding something from me? Why are you suddenly so warm towards me?"
Zheng Mengni slowly relaxed her grip, letting her hand fall gently to her side.
"I'm sorry, I didn't realize wandering around the house would trouble you," she said.
What a clever way to retreat while advancing.
Guan Su Lin took a deep breath, a slight smile curling at the corners of his mouth. "Of course you can walk around. I was just worried because I couldn't find you."
With that, he leaned down and embraced her.
Without giving her a chance to respond, he pressed her backward into the room, slamming the door shut behind them with a sound that seemed to carry an unspoken complaint.
The light had been turned off before Zheng Mengni opened the door, but Guan Su Lin raised his hand and switched it back on with a snap. "Leave it on; I'm afraid of the dark."
He looked down at her as she slowly smiled, her signature smile like a warm spring breeze, devoid of any malice. His eyes sparkled with a bright, innocent curiosity.
Guan Su Lin tilted his head slightly and playfully pressed his thumb against the delicate skin of Zheng Mengni's neck. "Hey? What's that red mark on your neck? I don't remember seeing it before I left. What happened?"
He deliberately slowed his tone, as if locking himself away from the truth. He had been holding back, pretending, acting. But it was exhausting; there would always come a moment when he could no longer contain himself and would explode.
He gritted his teeth repeatedly, enduring and holding back, fearing that if his true self were revealed, it would scare Zheng Mengni away.
She couldn't run away; she mustn't run away.
Zheng Mengni remained remarkably calm. "I attract mosquitoes more than others. I must have gotten bitten while passing through the garden just now."
Guan Su Lin pondered for a moment before exclaiming with a bright smile, "Oh, is that so? I almost misunderstood you."
Zheng Mengni didn't want to know what he had misunderstood. She pressed down on his cold hand naturally and shifted the topic. "Weren't you in the study? How did you finish so quickly?"
Guan Su Lin stared at her, laughing loudly. "Hahaha, Zheng Mengni, your words make it sound like you don’t want me here at all."
He pinched her soft cheek and asked slowly through gritted teeth, "Is that true?"
Zheng Mengni felt hurt and gently pulled his hand away, stepping back quietly. "Why would you think that? You're the only person I know here. If I didn’t want to see you, who else could I possibly want to see?"
Guan Su Lin stood still, watching as she increased the distance between them.
He maintained his smile, but it was chilling and devoid of warmth, sending shivers down one's spine.
"Do you really only know me?" he asked in return.
Zheng Mengni's face remained calm as she replied without missing a beat, "Who else could there be besides you?"
