Guan Qingmo fixed Tan Yan with a look that said, "Are you out of your mind to question me?" He spoke with an air of arrogance, "So what?"
Tan Yan remained silent, as still as a mountain, his fingertips trembling slightly. Beneath the calm surface, a storm brewed, deep and unfathomable. It was just waiting for a critical point to erupt completely.
The main hall was bustling with people. Before the formal meal began, Guan Su Lin sat on the sofa after greeting Zheng Mengni and several elders. The others merely recognized faces; there was no need for pleasantries or small talk.
Centered around them were many heavy-hearted gazes that followed their every move. Those who lived in the house spent their days with the old man and had some understanding of his health condition. It was said that Guan Li had even hired a lawyer; the notarization of the will was about to enter a critical phase, and his mental state was deteriorating day by day. The division of such a large inheritance would surely cause chaos.
Guan Su Lin seemed completely unaware of the current situation, focusing intently on feeding fruit to Zheng Mengni.
"Is it sour?" Guan Su Lin glanced over as Zheng Mengni chewed slowly, her thick eyelashes fluttering rapidly. She simply shook her head, unsure how to swallow what was in her mouth.
Her eyes were squinted shut; it was hard to tell if it was truly not sour or if she just didn't want to spit it out.
Guan Su Lin looked skeptical. "Really? Let me try." He leaned down and took a bite from the half-eaten piece of fruit in Zheng Mengni's hand. After just a couple of chews, he grimaced.
"Oh my, Zheng Zheng is about to spit it out!"
Guan Su Lin pinched her soft cheeks with one hand while using the other to catch whatever might come out. Zheng Mengni was startled by his actions and ended up swallowing hastily, which triggered a flood of saliva.
"It's fine, not sour at all."
Guan Su Lin raised his hand and dumped everything into the trash can, instructing the servant to bring over a fresh plate.
Across from them, Guan Qingmo sarcastically remarked, "Why did you throw it away? If you don't want it, someone else will."
Guan Qingmo wasn’t merely taking advantage of the crowd to criticize Guan Su Lin; he wanted to see how strong the bond between him and Aunt was. If Guan Su Lin truly cared about Aunt, he would never dare to expose his malicious nature so easily in front of others.
The outcome was much like what Guan Qingmo had imagined. Guan Su Lin looked unfazed by his rudeness, not even letting out a single sound, and gently instructed the servant to bring another plate for A Mo.
Guan Qingmo felt a chill run down his spine. Damn it, this was ridiculous. The act was just too much. He couldn't understand what the point of this kind of relationship was! It wasn't even himself anymore! There was no dignity, no bottom line.
However, perhaps Guan Su Lin actually enjoyed belittling himself for a woman. Suddenly, an idea struck Guan Qingmo; he realized something rare and insightful. Guan Su Lin now appeared timid, clearly afraid to act recklessly in front of Aunt. In other words, Aunt was his ultimate shield!
As long as he stayed close to Aunt, he could toy with Guan Su Lin however he pleased. He didn't believe that Guan Su Lin would dare reveal his true nature; with his demeanor, he was merely putting on a show. Otherwise, there was no way he could attract any women.
The more Guan Qingmo thought about it, the more pleased he became. Only Guan Miao noticed that Uncle's gaze was somewhat cold, definitely not as gentle as it appeared on the surface.
Tan Yan maintained the same posture without changing at all, his eyes not blinking once. Through his blindfold sunglasses, only Zheng Mengni remained in his line of sight. The pure and delicate girl quietly leaned against the annoying male figure beside her, creating a beautiful yet discordant scene that resembled a faded old photograph—its dark tones tinged with bitterness and astringency.
