Wei Jingxi stood in the descending elevator, his indifferent gaze passing through the transparent glass, looking up at the layers of cold white space.
Before he even reached the hospital entrance, he eagerly dialed Zheng Mengni's number. The moment the call connected, his eyes suddenly began to sting, even before he heard her voice.
Taking a deep breath, Wei Jingxi struggled to make his voice sound steady. "Xiao Ni, have you taken care of things at home?"
Zheng Mengni replied softly, "Mm, it's almost done."
"That's good."
"I'm afraid I won't have time to meet today. How about next week?"
Wei Jingxi nodded vigorously but quickly realized that Zheng Mengni couldn't see him. He hurriedly agreed. His voice carried a nasal tone; he was terrified that she would notice he was on the verge of tears.
He quickly changed the subject, speaking rapidly, "Xiao Ni, I miss you so much."
"You little snot-nosed kid."
"I didn't cry," Wei Jingxi protested as he rubbed his eyes.
"Who said you cried?"
"Wasn't it you?"
Zheng Mengni chuckled softly, "I meant you're being clingy."
Wei Jingxi responded with an "Oh." Internally, he grumbled that if she didn't like him, she wouldn't think he was clingy; if she did like him, she'd want to be together all the time. But now, he lacked the courage to ask Zheng Mengni whether she liked him or not.
Zheng Mengni sounded puzzled. "Why aren't you saying anything? Wei Jingxi, are you angry?"
He huffed in response, "Yeah."
"You're such a petty person. I'm hanging up now."
"Wait!" Wei Jingxi tightly gripped his phone and pleaded softly, "I was just joking; how could I be mad over something so trivial?"
His eyes were even redder now, the color spreading from the corners down to his cheeks. With his fair skin, the redness appeared abnormal, leaving one to wonder whether it was due to anger or anxiety.
On the other end of the line, Zheng Mengni suppressed her smile as she gazed at Ye Bingran, who was quietly looking out the window at the scenery. She spoke gently to Wei Jingxi, discussing matters with him.
"Alright, I won't tease you anymore. I really do have important things to attend to. Let's talk after this week is over."
Zheng Mengni was unaware that Ye Bingran dared only to watch her interact with others through the glass window.
She looked so gentle.
It was a stark contrast to how she appeared when facing him.
The truth seemed less difficult to discern now.
Ye Bingran forced a smile, tugging at the corners of his mouth.
This feeling of being emotionally manipulated was truly annoying.
As soon as Zheng Mengni hung up, Wei Nanxuan's call came in right after, relentless and demanding.
He only mentioned two things.
First: Luo Xuezhi's child was gone.
Second: He would not allow Wei Jingxi and Luo Xuezhi to live under the same roof for the time being.
In short, Wei Nanxuan intended to send Wei Jingxi abroad; otherwise, he would cut off his financial support.
Wei Jingxi said nothing and decisively hung up the phone. He would leave Xiao Ni only over his dead body.
He acted as if nothing had happened, going about his daily routine as usual. However, he no longer had a position in the company; Wei Nanxuan had removed him from his post.
Initially, Wei Jingxi did not pay much attention to these minor issues until Wei Nanxuan unceremoniously canceled all the gifts he had ordered for Xiao Ni.
In Wei Nanxuan's words, since it was his money and resources that were being used, every penny of pocket money that Wei Jingxi spent came from him.
