The noodles were hot, but Ye Bing ate quickly. With just a few bites, he finished his small portion.
After he was done, he crossed his arms and idly observed the two people across from him. Zheng Mengni had been raised with good manners since childhood; she maintained an elegant posture no matter the time or place. Afraid of the heat, she took a small bowl to serve her noodles.
Zheng Mengni focused on holding the bowl, her back straight, slightly lowering her head as she took small bites of the noodles. She chewed slowly and quietly, making no sound at all.
Beside her, Ye Siqian was even more subdued. He kept his head down so low that one could barely see the flush creeping up to his ears. It seemed as if he could only manage a single bite of noodles; it wasn't that he was reluctant to swallow, but rather that he had other intentions.
Ye Bing watched them intently, his gaze making Ye Siqian feel like he was sitting on pins and needles. He knew that Ye Bing was growing impatient, but Zheng Mengni was also eating slowly.
Zheng Mengni was absorbed in her meal. After sensing Ye Bing's gaze, she slowly swallowed what was in her mouth before looking up to meet his piercing black-and-white eyes. It was a bit hot, she explained to herself.
Ye Bing wasn’t in a hurry; he just tended to get sleepy during idle moments. Before getting up, he said, "Take your time eating. Order more if you need." Then he shoved his hands into his pockets and walked outside to lean against the wall for a bit of fresh air.
As soon as he left, Zheng Mengni quickened her pace. While she didn’t eat like a ravenous beast, she began taking larger bites. Once she finished quickly, she wiped her mouth clean and grabbed her bag to look for Ye Bing. Ye Siqian hastily stuffed the last bite of noodles into his mouth and followed after her.
Before getting in the car, Ye Bing asked Zheng Mengni again if she wanted to sit in the front seat. This time, she didn’t hesitate; she opened the passenger door and obediently fastened her seatbelt.
Two hours later, they finally saw some low buildings in sight. Observing the surroundings, Zheng Mengni couldn’t help but compare it to Heqing Town and found it lacking in every way. She even doubted whether anyone truly lived in such a place.
She thought they would have to drive a bit further, but Ye Bing said, "We’re here." He instructed Ye Siqian to take Zheng Mengni out of the car first while he looked for a parking space.
Ye Siqian grabbed her suitcase and followed closely behind Zheng Mengni.
Zheng Mengni cautiously asked, "I saw your sister post on social media before; it seems you lived in an orphanage?"
Ye Siqian quickly replied, "We used to live in an orphanage, but my sister said you wanted to come visit us. She’s been running around for several days trying to find a place; we finally rented a room and have been getting furniture set up during this time."
"I can stay at a hotel," Zheng Mengni said with a smile.
Ye Siqian explained, "There are no hotels here, only those private lodges. A few rooms, and the environment is terrible—it's messy, and most people who stay there..."
He didn't continue, seemingly aware that his words could be interpreted in a derogatory way. After all, he had once been unable to afford even the kind of lodgings he looked down upon.
Zheng Mengni remained silent for a long time, deep in thought. She blinked in disbelief and asked, "Is it because I'm here to have fun that your sister specifically rented a room?"
"Yes, exactly!" Ye Siqian hurriedly added. "We just bought the car too. It’s a bit old, but my sister didn’t hesitate to pay for it just to come pick you up."
As they parked the car, Ye Bing approached with the keys, overhearing their conversation. He glanced at Zheng Mengni with a knowing look, but her expression was far from touched.
"Thank you so much, Bing," Zheng Mengni smiled at him. "You really went out of your way."
Indeed, it felt like a Hongmen Banquet. With so many people around in the welfare home and the lodges being unsuitable, they had gone through the trouble of renting a room just to bring her in.
Zheng Mengni was rarely seen without a dress; she had chosen pants this time specifically to conceal self-defense items in her pockets.
